Vintage bike electric conversion - how to make a descent job of it!

Converting a vintage bike to electric sounds easy but can be really tricky, especially if you want to make a really good job of it!
In this video we take a look at the electric bike conversion options available out there and pro`s/cons and pitfalls to look out for, especially with a vintage bike - rim size, drop out spacings etc. can all be a challenge.
Plus, how to take a bit of care and avoid all of those nasty looking exposed cables held together with cable ties and electrical tape...
Plus of course we can`t just stick an electric bike conversion kit on a ratty old bike so we need to go through the base bike while we are at it...

I know what a difference it can make for anyone who is not an enthusiastic bike rider or who needs to moderate the physical demands on their body. Thanks for showing that it can be both neat and safe.

Given that a lot of vintage bike riders are elder, makes sense that converting a cool older bike would be better than just buying a new ebike, Dan

My dad had an ancient ten speed he put on a rack in my carport.. I've been considering fixing up with an e kit since he passed away. Wish more videos like this.

Nice work, very clean solution for containing the battery! I predict a lot of questions about the brakes, but since the motor isn't pushing you faster than normal speeds, I don't see why this would be any issue. Weight imbalance would be my concern, an interesting thing to know would be the front to rear imbalance. E-bikes are the answer to commuting, and a truly viable car replacement option for many - and if we can do it inexpensively and look good, that's even better. Would changing a rear puncture be damn near impossible? Would you use a "sausage" double-ended tube?

Weight is not a big issue - bike started out as a hefty 12k and finished at 15k - the battery location doesn`t effect the handling and as you mention, motor cuts out at 25kph so brakes are fine (though I hate to imagine what a 1000 watt motor strapped to this bike would be like - proper dangerous...), Dan

The stubby mudguards don't do it for me. You didn't explain how you painted the rear wheel

The mudguards were really damaged so had to trim them down to good metal - rear wheel was etch primed, silver and 2k laquer but didn`t want to focus too much on that side of the project Dan

How do those brakes work ?

They are Weimann center pulls with seat tube between the caliper and brake cable attachement, Dan

Not sure I can back you on this one. E-bikes are a plague. Enabling people to become more lazy whilst thinking they are doing exercise. But i do like your enthusiasm.

I think you are being a bit harsh. Some people could literally damage themselves putting too much effort into tackling hills, but they still enjoy being out in the fresh air and enjoying the countryside.

@@berenicebaker7191 I am being harsh, excuse me. There are obviously benefits for some people in using electric bikes. I do however find it sad that everything has to be electric, from tooth brushes and nose hair removers to paper and screwdrivers.

I hear what you are saying - though the massive popularity of ebikes shows there`s a huge demand for them - and for elder or less competant riders they can really help keep riders out on the road - and maybe do it in style... Dan

Also take into account that e-bikes get more people out on the road, which makes cycling in general safer and nicer for everybody. Also, more people using e-bikes instead of their cars means less cars on the road, which also makes cycling in general safer and nicer for everybody.

@@MarioBecerraC I appreciate all the above. I would like to point out that in my local provincial town, there are many old people cycling to and from the shops and market, whilst being overtaken by 'the youth' on their electric scooters and electric bikes.
