Re: the red beads with stars and moons: I don’t remember where I read it, but they were made in Europe but specifically for sale to pilgrims to Mecca. They are used for Muslim prayer beads (like Catholics use). I don’t know how many beads are in one of these prayer bead strands. One often saw in earlier decades Greek Orthodox men fiddling with them whenever they weren’t using their hands. Someone told me that the Orthodox men used them so that Muslims wouldn’t suspect them of being Christians. Some Greeks continued to use these (« worry beads »), even after liberation from the Turks, out of habit. I remember seeing this
