I really like the vintage shave brushes, but sometimes they really show their age. Bristles falling out, scratched, worn; that's why it's cool to restore them. I saw a video by Hunter Green on RU-vid, where he received a Restored C40 Ever Ready Shave Brush from his friend Anthony MacKenzie Jr. What a nice looking brush.
I started researching how to restore a brush, and Anthony took a phone call from me and gave me his step by step instructions. I also talked with Jonah Shaw, who also had restored some brushes, and I took down his advice. I took good notes from both gents and decided to try a restoration myself. Here is my first restoration of a Ever Ready C40 Brush.
Surprising, there are almost no videos on RU-vid of a complete shaving brush complete restoration. So here you go.
Thanks for watching. Subscriptions appreciated.

I'm starting some restorations, myself, and found this to be quite helpful along with Razor Emporium's restore video. Not helpful was the boiling water/steam method video-I ended up melting a 150 brush handle and the knot was still holding tight. I found my wife's orange-handled Fiskars sewing scissors to be IDEAL to cut the knot to a clean edge right against the handle. I also seemed to get a cleaner cut with a damp brush. Shave on!

I have a C40 that I bought new many, many years ago. It sat under my sink for years, along with several other brushes. Got back to using them about 6 months ago. Good stuff.

Please, next time when you're drilling the brush handle: Set on the table, portable vise, with rubber lips. I was nervous when I saw whirling drill near your left hand. Good idea to weight brush with metal balls. The video shows your dog) I decided to participate in the reconstruction.)

The next ones I used a drill press. It was faster. My dog loves hanging out, especially when I make the videos..lol

I typically fill vintage handles with epoxy repair putty. It adds heft to the handle and it's sandable so it allows you to remove the hardened putty to set the loft height.
@kensurfs
@kensurfs 8 лет назад
Do you add any extra weight into the handle or just the epoxy?
@assfacemcgraw
@assfacemcgraw 8 лет назад
I don't add any weight myself. The putty adds enough weight for me. To each their own.

Thank you for your video sir. You have inspired me to try this for my ever-ready brushes. Where do get the cloth attachments for the dremel?

Ken, I have watched this video many times over the last year and I am finally ready. I purchased a c100 Eveready off eBay that looks like the c40 in your video. Any idea what the difference might be?

Great video! I just get one C40 and will start the restoration very soon! When I saw your videos I got very excited about that! Did you used the wet sanding process? What is the loft height you have without including the glue? Just the synthetic hair! Thank you!
@kensurfs
@kensurfs 7 лет назад
The height on this 24mm knot is 60mm. I did use fine wet sandpaper to take out any deep scratches. The buffing wheel with polish took out the rest. See part 2 video👍👍

What size knot did you buy for the ever ready brush? I see the sizes vary from 20mm and up
@Diver6127

If you used the double boiler method, you wouldn't have to do all that grinding with the dremel.

You dont have to cut and drill the brush. Just use the boiling method. Use a glass container and a double boiler method. Immerse the glass container in about 2" of boiling water let it heat the brush for about 15 minutes. Then just pull the knot out. Replace the knot with epoxy and let it sit over night
