Setting your own shaving brush knot into a shaving brush handle is super easy. It allows you to buy empty handles and put any knot you like into it, rather than being stuck with the limited offerings from the brush vendor. It also allows you to experiment with different loft settings to get the feel and performance that you like best. Here’s a full video walkthrough to give you the confidence you need to assemble your own shaving brushes. Listed below are some of my favorite resources for brush handles and knots.

I’ve lost track of how many time I screwed up a knotting job and had to start over. I appreciate this video. Gives me more knowledge and confidence to try it again.

Luckily I've never botched one, but using silicone instead of epoxy makes it much easier to fix if you do.

Thanks for the howto demonstration, have not attempted setting my own knot yet, however, this demo will help me when I do. I like the idea of using the less permanent Silicone.

Awesome color brush. I like how the knot matches the handle well. Pretty smart about the metal, never thought of that before. Good vid. 😁👍🏼

Thanks, man. Yeah, I always try to make sure my knots match the handle pretty well. I also try not to have any identical knots. I'd been looking for something to put one of those brown knots into.

One does not need the spacer if he is trying to reattach knot & handle which had become separated. Instead, one just needs sandpaper or dremel tool to remove old adhesive material, and then use marine glue or epoxy glue to just reconnect the knot and handle. Just something to think about for REPAIR instead of attaching new to new.
@TheShavingDisciple
@TheShavingDisciple 2 года назад
Probably not needed for repair, and maybe not for a new assembly either. All depends on your goal.

Just discovered this video; jam packed with great info, thank you! If I'm using epoxy instead of silicone, is the process the same in terms of how much glue to use?

Will the silicone be fine being submerged under water when wetting the brush, as well as handle the varying temperature and humidity of a bathroom without loosing its grip? Thanks for the informative video!

Great tutorial, Garrett! I've tried using silicone, the exact GE brand actually, and after three days the knot still came out. I suspect I got too much warm water into the knot and it softened the silicone some how. I switched it up and used expoy. I have another brush I want to knot and will try silicone again, but first need to order a knot...looking at an AP Shave Co. Synbad.
@TheShavingDisciple
@TheShavingDisciple 2 года назад
Yeah, I'm curious how this will hold up over time. Not a huge deal if it comes out. I can always redo it with epoxy. I have a 28mm SynBad and the bulb and fan 24mm waiting for handles.

How's the repair holding up long term? Great instructional - thanks!
@TheShavingDisciple
@TheShavingDisciple Год назад
Holding up great. I will add a caveat that I have a decent rotation of brushes, so I've probably only used it like 25 times. But no sign of the silicone wearing down so far.

we manuafacture shave brushes, solid aluminum, we use a special designed nylon spacer and our equipment dispense and mixes epoxy. We tried Silicone and had too many dissatisfied customers with loose knots due to people soaking them in hot water before whipping up a lather. Great video however!
@DLC1990

Does silicone really melt that easily?
@TheShavingDisciple
@TheShavingDisciple Год назад
I can see that. Not sure I would recommend it for a seller unless you offered it as an option with a warning that the knot might come loose if not handled with appropriate care. But for people who like to set their own knots and play around with lofts and such, it's a much easier solution.

I have at least 25 shaves on this brush, and I live in AZ where the house can get up around 80 in the summers. No issues yet. But I'm sure if you use hot enough water over a long enough period of time you might see an issue.
@DLC1990
@DLC1990 Год назад
Silicone supposedly has a high melting point, around 400f, so unless people soak their brushes in lava, water temp shouldnt be an issue. I suspect that maybe the silicone just doesnt bond to surfaces very well unless theyre prepared properly first.

The first time I put a knot into a handle I didn't use a spacer and the knot ended up being way too deep. The knot was way too stiff and water got trapped deep inside of the knot and caused mildew to form very easily. I had to steam it and the gel tip badger I spend 50$ was ruined and even had some mold inside of it.

Yeah, you have to make sure that cavity is filled with whatever materials you use. Sorry to hear about your loss.

Still recommended silicome? My brush just came undone after many years
@TheShavingDisciple
@TheShavingDisciple 2 года назад
It’s been over a year on a few brushes with no issues for me. If I have to re-set with silicone every few years it’s probably still less work than drilling out an epoxied knot just once.

Hey Garrett Did you say what kind of knot that is on this video, maybe I missed it?
@TheShavingDisciple
@TheShavingDisciple 2 года назад
It's a Faux Horse synthetic knot from AP Shave Co. Faux Horse as in it looks a bit like a horse hair knot. It doesn't come anywhere close to feeling like one. This is one of my softest synthetics.
