Dear Friends,
Today, I had a hankering for a fine cigar and thought it would be a perfect evening to enjoy a genuine and beautifully preserved and aged King Edward Perfecto Cigar from 1929!
KING EDWARD cigars are manufactured by Jno H. Swisher & Son. This pack of five was manufactured during the Prohibition Era and the beginning of the Great Depression, consisting of a natural tobacco wrapper and a blend of fine tobaccos. They are in mint condition for being over 90 years old. Having been aquired through a private collector, they were part of a store selling display of 50 cigars (10 five packs). This is the oldest cigar I have ever had the pleasure of smoking.... and boy was it swell! Mild, earthy, smooth, creamy and ever so aromatic! A wonderful way to end the day.
Now a little history...
Swisher traces its roots back to 1861 when David Swisher, a merchant out of Newark, Ohio, received a small cigar business in settlement of a debt. David and his four sons began to sell cigars across the Midwest from their “rolling stores” or wagons. The cigars were rolled by hand every day in a one-room “manufactury” in Newark. In 1888, David’s sons, John and Harry, bought the company from their father and renamed it Swisher Brothers. The company experienced great growth, and by 1895 the business had grown into three factories that employed over 1,000 people who hand-rolled as many as 300,000 cigars per day.
In 1913, John bought out his brother, Harry, took on his own son, Carl, and renamed the company to Jno H. Swisher & Son. About ten years later, Carl selected Jacksonville, Florida when looking for a new home for their growing business due to the area’s climate, shipping facilities, and proximity to raw materials and markets. Swisher has been headquartered in Jacksonville ever since.
In 1923, Swisher was the first company to order rolling machines, which transformed the business by cost-effectively mass-producing cigars of great uniformity. The “fresh work” machines went into operation in Jacksonville on June 20, 1924, and by the end of the 1920s, Swisher was making 100 million cigars a year. Swisher was also the first to wrap individual cigars in cellophane and the first to come up with a simple device for removing the cellophane by pulling the cigar band. During the same period and largely due to its investment in money-saving machinery, Swisher was able to cut the price of its King Edward Cigar from 5 cents each to 2 for 5 cents. Sales soared, and by the early 1940s, King Edward was the world’s number one cigar. By 1941, the Jacksonville facility was the largest cigar factory in the world under one roof. It also housed the nation’s first industrial children’s nursery, which opened in 1939.
I hope you enjoyed this video as much as I enjoyed making it. Whether you are relaxing with a nice cigar or a pipe today, I sincerely wish you swell smokes always!

These bring back memories, my late father would love it when I came back from military tours as I’d always bring him a box of king Edward’s as a treat. I haven’t had a king Edward for years in fact I’ve never had what we call a great cigar for many years only what I’d been given on game shoot days by very wealthy gentleman who would pay thousands for a days red grouse shooting here in the U.K.

Ahhh, this reminded me of my late dad. We knew it was going to be a good Christmas for presents if there was a bottle of Blue Nun on the table and dad had a King Edward cigar. Back in the early 70s few ordinary 🇬🇧 folk drank wine at home, but Blue Nun was affordable and popular. It was a bit of a UK Christmas tradition until we all got ‘so sophisticated’ 🤣.

God rest him! He raised a fine daughter. Our sophistication had, and really still has quotation marks around it here. But just the picture in my mind of the Christmas Dinner and its smells and all the happy voices and the laughter... We were, not to put too fine a point on it, broke. Flatter'n a flitter. But the little comforts like those. Your few words pierced my heart.

Oh, my. My grandfather, born in 1897, was a constant man. He was a lumber yard foreman with the same company for 45 years. And for longer than that, when he wasn't smoking Half&Half, he was either chewing Brown's Mule plug-cut tobacco, or smoking King Edward Perfecto cigars. As Bob Hope said, "Thanks for the memories."

Sweet, Parker - you've got this recovering historical tobacco relics down to a science. Congratulations on another remarkable find. And thanks for the history behind it, too! The introduction of rolling machines made cigars affordable for the working man. Getting Sentimental Over You is, of course, right in line with those cigars. Choosing the 1934 recording by the Dorsey Brother's Orchestra with Bob Crosby was perfect. Picture the working guy in front of his radio smoking a well-earned evening cigar and listening to this recording. (A year later, Tommy Dorsey would form his own band and made this song the band's theme song.) Be well, my friend, keep on enjoying those historic marvels, and keep walking the path of awesome - peace ✌

Thanks buddy! I thought a cigar video was long overdue. I do enjoy them in a very unique way from pipes especially when I’m celebrating something. I find that cigars are sometimes a little easier to enjoy whilst conversing with friends in fellowship than with a pipe. This cigar was a real treat for me, and my first King Edward experience. Really took me back to a simpler time. Hope all is well with you and yours!

I loved everything about this video. The music, radio, ashtray, cigar cutter, lighter, and cigars look amazing. I occasionally mix it up from my pipes and enjoy a fine cigar as well. Does the St. DuPont lighter also function well as a pipe lighter? Thanks for all you do.
@pipe_appeal

Two comments in one video, lucky me! Thank you pal. The lighter could be used for a pipe but I would most definitely dial back the flame to a softer flame. This particular lighter is really cool because it also has a built in torch so I can toggle between as needed.

I’ve never had one of the recent versions of King Edward. This was the first I’ve ever had as a matter of fact. From what I’ve gathered from other folks, this is another brand that has suffered over the years in terms of quality like some of the other classic cheaper American made cigars from yesterday. I usually smoke Cuban Habanos and with that said, this King Edward from 1929 was a very nice smoke!

My daddy and me always preferred Dutch Masters President's over the other readily available brands. They were always good and smooth. I prefer a pipe these days, and daddy hasn't had a cigar since the 90's, but he still loves em. Him and I reminisced about those cigars just last week. King Edward's were good too. Funny story, my first pencil box was a Dutch Masters President box daddy had put masking tape over to hide the fact it was a cigar box. Those were the days
