They actually did sell web refill tubes. It was made by Chemtoy and was used in the wrist spider web spinners as well (as advertised in comic books). I still have a couple refill bottles I bought as a kid. I bought just the bottles as I couldn't afford the web spinner. I thought it would work straight out of the tube. It didn't. Not sure how well it actually worked out of the web spinner either.

When we were cleaning out the attic at my grandparent's house, there was a box of my dad and uncle's toys. The lid was stuck and when we finally got it free there was all this string covering the contents of the box. First we thought it was some kind of arachnid infestation but up[on closer inspection we saw the threads originating from the Spider-Man doll and a metal tube. Turns out, when Grandpa was packing up all the old toys, he scooped up everything without realizing what it was and the changing climate of that attic caused the fluid inside the Spider- man toy and the tube to expand outward sticking to everything. It was quite a wild sight.

I had one, and I remember they were displayed next to hulk and Spider-Man branded helicopters that you could put the figures into. This was in Kmart in Louisville Kentucky.

I had one. I lived and still live in Rochester NY and it was mid 70s , don't know if it was us version, probably, but not magnetic and he looked just like yours. Also no accessory, not even web, that I remember. I don't remember the package. His hands are red, his groin is kinda like molded underwear. I think. And he didn't have any string gimmick like superman. I didn't have a lot of big figs. I had Steve Austen and maskatron and this space fighter guy in a blue and gold costume with a sheild that had a lightbulb in it's center. That's pretty much it. Then starwars came out. Most of these were Christmas or birthday and I was pretty young. I'm a 1968 baby.

they did sell the same version on that card back briefly, which in itself is a mystery.

The 12 inch MEGO SpiderMan figure is one 12 incher I never had them or now. But when the first SpiderMan movie starring Tobey Maguire came out 20 years ago, that plus the Danny Elfman music makes me want to get one. Oh well, maybe someday. As a kid, I had the 12 inch MEGO Wonder Woman and I had the 12 inch MEGO Magnetic Batman and Robin figures. Today, I have reacquired all three. Plus I have the Christopher Reeve Superman figure and the 12 inch MEGO Incredible Hulk. Maybe someday, I'll be able to add the 12 inch Spidey to my collection. :)

your friend did the smart thing selling to you at a reasonable price -- he's going to take a little less now and build a rapport for future sales rather than take a lot less later on as i've heard collectible prices are cooling off and a hard recession is looming after the elections are over. who knows when or even if we'll ever see these over-inflated prices again. one thing is very likely, though, which is if someone keeps that $600 price tag that thing will possibly never sell, at least not for a very, very long time. and, honestly, you're probably one of the few who's showed serious interest. collectors who are going to spend $600 on a toy tend to be pretty savvy. they know the bubble is about to burst, it's just a question of how bad it's going to get. i'm not sure if vintage mego prices are getting more realistic, but just very recently a rocket firing L-slot boba fett went for $136K all told, which is about half of the estimate based on sales of lesser fetts which went for stupid money. of course, there are mitigating factors probably involved -- e.g. a lot of these have been on the market as of late -- but the perception to many will be the market is collapsing. having that low price sets a precedent, and when you deal with a market where only about 100 of them exist i'm sure there's going to be much speculation about where prices are headed. it could just be an anomaly, but if it happens with the next auction i think its price fate for years will be sealed and there'd be a trickle-down effect. but, we know a recession is coming and by most reports it's going to be on a 2008 level, so not good. what happens? people get desperate and sell off collections cheap, and coupled with far fewer people buying toys, prices are probably going to fall quite a bit. my knee-jerk advice to anyone who's planning on selling something is to sell it now. i think there's enough writing on the wall to justify not waiting. you might get a little more if you put it off, but that's just speculation, and collectible markets have collapsed before. i mean, does anyone believe that in a year from now anyone is going to drop $600 on that? i don't, that's why i'm not buying much of anything, because i truly think that in a year or two i'll save thousands picking stuff up at a fair price after the real-life necessities of collectors outweighs paying ridiculous top-dollar prices and endless online fees for what very much are luxury items. i could be 100% wrong as it's all nothing but speculative guesswork, but just some food for thought.

I had GI Joe but that was about it...vague memories of having some of the mego monsters and being disappointed how they didn't look like the universal monsters Thank goodness they corrected that ! And I've got all of the newest wave ones! They are the ones I wish my 10 year old self could have had.

The greatest 12” figure was the Hulk because you could use him with you regular 8” heroes that you already had and he was bigger instead of smaller like the 8” Hulk

After Tony's overview over at Analog Toys, I'm in agreement. Now I need to find one of the bloody things after term starts. The regular (no way is he) 8" Hulk has that "I've been sick!" Tex Avery vibe.

As a kid I actually preferred the 8" Mego superheros. However, I did get the 12" Hulk because it made sense to me that he'd be so much bigger than the others. It bothered me that The Hulk and The Thing were shorter than everyone else.

I had the 12” Spiderman but only with the fly-away action and the spider web. My original one broke at the knee (which seems to be the most common damage to the 12 inch line). I rebought the same one on eBay, along with the 12” magnetic Batman and 12” 1978 Superman that I also owned as a kid. Personally I think that the 12” Hulk was the best 12” figure in the line. My brother actually had the Remco Spiderman when we were kids and I remember thinking that it was kind of dull compared to the Mego figure because it wasn’t poseable and was mainly a glorified flashlight lol

Great video, thanks. I was wondering what that web fluid was made of. If it was PVC like you say, I imagine they had to keep it mixed with a solvent to stay fluid/flexible -- maybe acetone? Not great for kids to play with, but that's probably the least harmful solvent they could've chosen at that time. I remember when I was a kid we used to get this Popeye-branded gel that came in a tube with a little straw -- you'd put some of the gel on the end of the straw and blow, and end up with a little, plasticy balloon (which promptly deflated to uselessness). Knowing what I do now about how different solvents smell, I think they might've used toluene for that one. Yikes.

I was fortunate enough to own a Mego 12 inch Hulk and a Mego 12 inch Superman, during my childhood. Sadly, both were thrown away in '86 and they are now grail items that I would love to own again, but vintage Mego action figures are extremely difficult to find in the UK. :(

I've had the 12 inch Spider-man since 1978, but I don't remember who gave it to me or what the occasion was. It could have been Santa Claus. I think it was the carded one that came with the spiderweb, but no Fly Away Action. In recent years, I've bought the empty Mego boxes to go with the superheroes, and I managed to get an incomplete Web-Spinning Spider-man with the box for under $40. I was in the right place (Ebay) at the right time.

Very interesting story about Spidey's toy backstory, another great video. I never unfortunately had the 12" version as shown here, but I was fortunate to have the regular 8" version until he got lost somehow. Many decades later, I was lucky to get another Mego 8" Spider-Man, and he now is greatly treasured. Ironically, the tv commercial with the Hulk is pretty play accurate for me when younger, and finally, yup, I can't get that Web-Spinning Spider-Man song out of my mind! 🤣🤣🤣

Webs! WEBS!!!!! Maybe they used the image of Mister Fantastic because of the FF cartoon from the time (the one with Herbie)? Possibly it was on TV and they thought it would have some resonance with kids? No magnetic Spiderman... but magnetic Batman and Robin?! I had the Robin with more manly face - I loved that sculpt, but I hated the big clunky magnets in his hands... I had Batman, Robin and Spidey in 12 inch. Didn't get Hulk until adulthood, but I always wanted him...
