I worked for Sunglass Hut Before and after Luxottica acquired them. The quality of sunglasses back then was so much better. Most had glass lenses, sturdier frames. way better quality Brands like Rayban, Revo, Persol.
I’ve owned a few old school wayfarers and I have a pair made in 2021. My memory says old school were definitely better quality. Also the prices are crazy now! A buddy that’s a district mgr of eyeglass gave me new pair. But I don’t know/ think I’d pay $150 plus for them. Back in the day seems Wayfarers we’re around $30 a pair.
I have new Rayban Prescription Wayfarers, and they take me right back to my teenage years in the 80s when they had a resurgence. It seems like they are a timeless classic style.
I own two pair of B&L Ray Bans, one Large Metal Aviator and one Wayfarer II, very large lens on that one. I also own Lux Ray Bans of same/similar models. I can say the build quality is far better on the B&Ls. But I have retired both of those as they were gifts from my father and I'd rather not lose/damage them more than they already are from wear.
I started my collection when I was 18 in 2016 now I own like 50 pairs of b&l ones and like 13 luxottica new ones, I prefer baush everyday , they are superior in every aspect, wish I could buy more in new condition, greeting from Mexico City.
B&L were doing the etching since the 80s, logo as well. The Lux cases are a poor copy of the last cases B&L sold with their products, but the B&L ones had a slit to attach to your belt.
just got a pair of new looking B&L ray ban wayfarers for 10 bucks in my local flea market. I just cant believe it so that's why im watching this kind of videos. thanks for making this one!
I have both B&L and Luxottica wayfarer frame's,both have prescription lenses,I also have a pair of B&L wayfarers with original lenses,I purchased those long before I needed prescription glasses at a Bausch and Lomb plant in Oakland Md ,I used to deliver to that plant for an airfreight company and I could purchase raybans at employees discount at their factory store.i also have an original wayfarer slip case and found out how dry rotted the inside was when I slipped the B&L wayfarer back into the case.
Thanks for the review and nice comparison! I own a pair of original B&L wayfarers that I bought myself back in the '90s (I can't recall the exact year, probably '93-'94): they are still in great conditions, only the acetate frame is slightly worn off and less shiny in some areas but other than that they are still great (especially the lenses!) and I still happily wear them. I have then bought a pair of Luxottica original wayfarer classic a year ago and I must say I love them too, they fit very well on my face and the materials are still premium quality. I actually noticed - and it shows in your video too if you closely look just at the stems :) - the way the stems used to be bent in the 90' was "bolder": they were pushed more towards the outside, creating a wider gap between the frame and the temples on the face, as if the trend back then was to push the overall look to slightly more exaggerated curves. At least this is based on my own experience comparing my two pairs and noticing the same in your video. For that reason, I currently like more how the Luxottica ones fit on my face. A note about materials (like you mentioned in your videos too but to clarify the quality perception and perplexity I read in some of the comments): 2140s are the only wayfarers still made in acetate, the folding (4105) and the new wayfarers (2132) are made in nylon, while the wayfarer ease (4340) are in propionate. Nylon on the folding wayfarer was probably a required compromise to keep the weight down and maintain flexibility but I do not like the nylon material used on the new wayfarer classic at all. Propionate seems quite similar to acetate, it's slightly more flexible and 4340s are around 2grams lighter than 2140s.
Don't know why they had to change the brow angle on the newer model, but the way those hinges stick up was a deal breaker for me. As usual, leave it to Luxottica to f*ck up a perfect pair of glasses.
Vintage ones are made from acetate wich is derived from cellulose (wood pulp). It is wise to rejuvinate them with flax seed oil from time to time. New ones I don’t know what are made from, but when you compare them side by side, they are different. And vintage ones have wider temples. 90s B&Ls also have Ray Ban markings on right lens and on both temples, have flatter brow line and there are Wayfarer 2s with wider front/lens. Pre 90s models are in two dimensiones, 5022 and 5024. 50 is lens size and 24 is bridge size
@@DavidJ2595 without a doubt they’d replace them. Theyre a perfect work around for the 54mm. I like the 5024 because they maintain the same look as the classic 5022 while being slightly oversized. I myself didn’t like the 54mm because they don’t quite capture the same look as the 5022. Its a shame Ray-Ban doesn’t make that size anymore. Hope this helps!
Well outside of the Logos - they seem essentially on video to be the same. We of course do not have the sense of touch and feel on face, you didn't really mention any difference in these areas. The weight difference is likely attributable to the hinges. Wonder how they compare to the AO Saratoga?
I think the old ones feel sturdier than the new ones. They are still made out of acetate, but the frame feels more like plastic and they are bit creakier. My old pair fell out of the car at low speed once and they didn't suffer any damage at all. Quite impressive for some 35 year old sunglasses.
@@ShadeReview all in 50mm.. i have blue mosaic came from 90s. and its NOS with original sticker and Papers. ebony from 70s tortoise from 70s all of them are in good condition
I can't believe Luxottica does not offer a Wayfarer logo-less version. The logos are ridiculous and cheapens the model. They could charge a premium for it.
@@ShadeReview What do you mean exactly? I know the logo on the lens can be easily removed but what about the temple logos? Plus then you'd need a way to put the metal accents on the temples instead of the logos.
@@amtq The Ray-Ban badge has two lugs that are inserted into the arms, hence the decorative electroplated circles on the insides of the arms. If there's a way to insert vintage style badging into those 2 pilot holes then I also wanna know about it. Would make modding current version Wayfarers more fun because the name badging is an overplayed, dull look. Ray-Ban are the cheapest sunglasses for the highest quality nowadays, nobody truly what anybody is wearing anymore and nobody should care. I have all these different Ray-Ban pairs because it became tough to find the perfect pairs for myself, and I get no compliments lol. I'm sensitive to light and UV rays so I wear sunnies all the time outside, my pairs get mileage on them. Particularly my polarised Baloramas and Shooters (both vintage 1960s and 2021 model year). Currently seeking out B-15 polarised for my 2021 Statesides. The blue lenses project a distracting blue glare, but my other blue lensed (from the factory) Ray-Bans do not have this major flaw.
I have retro fitted my lux wayfarers. The ray ban dealer I go to has repaired my vintage glasses multiple times and when I bought a new pair from him I asked if he could do it. Took 5 mins to replace the logo with new studs. But for the most part I wear my vintage ones out and about. I have been collecting them for years I like to grab them cheap from eBay.
Interestingly I have seen someone selling B&L Wayfarers with the temple logos on! There’s no “Ray-ban” painted on the lens, the lens is stamped BL and the frame is stamped also. So I’m assuming at some point they did do this. Assuming around the 80’s / 90’s?
Can't seem to find the answers to my questions. May I know if the B&L Wayfarers came with other lens sizes besides 50mm? May I also know the model numbers? Thanks in advance!
Cool dude awesome review! Ive been watching miami vice again and cant stop thinking about the wayfarers, then i found out the originals in the movie were Wayfarers by Bausch and Lomb 5022. Now im thinking of getting the original pair. Do u know if the originals are better quality like the lense and build?
I've had no luck finding this out, but was wondering if anyone could tell me the approximate age of a pair of Aviators I have. On top of the bridge B&L Ray-Ban USA is etched on. The model code is L2823 VPAS (there is no RB3025 to be found anywhere on the frame unless I'm looking wrong). The model code is not etched in the arm as they are now, but embossed on the soft part at the end of the arm that rests behind your ear. The left (or right if wearing them) lens does have the Ray-Ban logo, but I suspect these replaced an old lens and the frames themselves are old. But maybe that's just me hoping I found something "vintage". I would appreciate any help, not even Ray-Ban support knew what "VPAS" was but I assume they're outsourced support team isn't fully aware of these details or history. Thank you.
Have you done anything with the RB 2113's? I know they have been discontinued, but I like how they don't look so chunky or like a child wearing adult glasses, since I have a narrow face. My question is do you think the RB 2113 were ever counterfeited?
I have a vintage pair of bl Ray ban wayfarer which unfortunately broke at the middle of the frame Can't you tell me what to do now Should I try to fixe them or replace the frame with new one and keep the bL lenses Or selling the like they are?
Thanks for the review! Any sign of looseness around the temple area? My old pair seem more loose than when I originally bought them. I've tightened the screws on the sunglass arms, but they're still loose.
So not really a great deal of difference with regard to the frames. However not one mention on how the actual lenses compare to each other, which I would've thought was more important than the frames. One of the best aspects of B&L lenses is that colour through them wasn't affected by the lens shade. Is this still the case with Italian made ray-ban lenses? This revue doesn't touch on this fact.
So did you say that your vintage pair didn't have the b&l etched in the right and left lens? I just picked up a pair for 1.99 at a thrift shop and they are exact to your vintage pair. They do have the b&l etched in the lens. How do I figure out how old they are?
I wish Ray Ban actually made the tortoise wayfarer like they did in the 80s because the modern day tortoise is basically always black looking in nearly all light situations sadly
@@ShadeReview I just compared my father-in-law's 70's Wayfarers with the Lux version. The tilt is less in the vintage. In addition, the nose pads are higher up on the frame in the vintage Wayfarers as compared to the Lux Wayfarers.
This nicely shows how terrible that painted on Ray-Ban logo looks, I wiped that off my new pair within the first few days of owning my new Wayfarers. They are customized with my name on the inner temple tip anyway, so wouldn't have much resale value even with the painted logo intact.
My name is Chanon from Thailand. Follow the channel to learn the difference and the price in Thailand enough to save up a whole month to buy. Finally, I look forward to hearing from you. Nice to meet you Chanon Saardpru, and this is my friend.
I would love to review them too. Maybe if my channel ever gets popular I can review those! All those brands have very low searches per month according to my analytics. So the videos will not get enough views to cover even 10% of the cost of them. But don’t worry if they ever happens I will definitely be reviewing them all!
I have a New Wayfarer that are my Rx eyeglasses, Made in Italy. They are made with “nylon”. I’m wondering if I’ll have any brittleness problem with replacing the lenses should my Rx change next year.
@@baruchbenyaakov "acetate" frames are made from nylon. They are essentially the same thing when talking about eyewear frames. And you shouldn't have any issues on a pair that is only a few years old. In 40 years...you may have to be careful.
@@mph7282 ..yes and definitely no... nylon in acetate is plant based, but most other nylon is petroleum based... different feel and not "exactly" the same...
i can tell you ive been a ray ban man since mud 70,s till now thes new ones suck they have no tilt to them the baysh and laumb shouldve never sold out italy new ones aint worth a shit
Every Ray Ban model from B&L blows Luxottica away! Especially the Ray Ban LO255 Olympians. They are some of the sleekest shades. The Luxottica 3119 Olympians look horrible in my opinion.
Im just glad wayfarer 2140 is still made by hand, i got them and they feel pretty good. I also got the new wayfarer and they look good but feel cheap as hell :(
