Troubleshooting and repair of the vintage Pioneer SX-838 receiver that had a noisy transistor. In this video I clean all of the controls, switches, and potentiometers and then because I didn't have the necessary 2NA725 PNP transistor, I substituted a 2N3906 PNP transistor and it worked great! Interesting how Pioneer used Elna caps and also some polystyrenes on that board. Pioneer had such a great reputation in that era. Probably still does. Such well made equipment in those days from most of the big guys. I like the vintage chicken head knobs that you put on the tone controls. This video has really helped me with a problem I'm having with a Hafler DH101 that is making noise in one channel. Thank You !

It would be a 2SA725 transistor, not 2NA725

Nice fix. It's easier to hear any difference between the channels using head phones I think. Have you tried that?

Jake: Sorry to come at you from a 7 year old build of yours, BUT. I am going to Burning Man for the first time, I lost my wife 2 years ago and this would never have been possible before now. I am 75 and just retired last July, so now I have the time. I have a Toyota mini van with a full size bed but it is cramped, so I want to build a Pentayurt. I just bought a 5 x 8 utility trailer that I will be bringing most of my stuff in so I should have plenty of room to haul the yurt. My first problem is finding the DOW Tuff-R panels that you used, I can't find them, did they stop making them? The 1 inch panels that I find are aluminized foam and are NOT as rigid as those DOW Tuff-R panels? I am both a commercial and an amateur radio operator and plan to set up at Burning Man just for giggles. I live in Medford Oregon so it's only a 4 hour drive to Burning Man. Rich

Hi Rich! Busy at the moment, but will respond at length in the morning! You are going to love the burn!

Hi Rich! Out here on the east coast Home Depot (which I only used because it was the sole source) carries the Tuff-R panels but it looks like west coast HD only has R-Tech. Lowe's has a product from Johns Mansfield www.lowes.com/pd/Johns-Manville-R-6-1-in-x-4-ft-x-8-ft-AP-Foil-Faced-Polyisocyanurate-Foam-Board-Insulation/5013061199 that I have used to make a hexayurt. It's not quite as nice as the Tuff-R but it totally works. Also check out www.youtube.com/@juliedanger for tips on making foldable yurts. I cover that a little bit but she invented the technique! Coming in from the North is definitely the way to go if you are driving in, the traffic through Gerlach is EPIC! Attaching the yurt to the ground the moment it's up is super important! The wind can take things away in an instant! I'm still using re-bar stakes but the kids all use 12-14" lag bolts with a washer and a coule of link of chain and bring a drill-driver set set them in the ground. If you go with re-bar make sure you have a tennis ball or (my favorite) a solar light to cover the end of the re-bar so your camp-mate don't scrape an angle in the dark! These guy are good for tape: www.renohexayurt.com/products/6-hexayurt-tape order it NOW! It starts to sell out as the burn gets closer. Get extra, it's super useful for lots of things! Finally, a tip on water. You're driving in with a trailer so this will be less of an issue for you, but I always take the bus in and I bring a gallon or two with me on the bus and I ship all my gear ahead on the Boston container truck. Among my gear is an oversized cooler (2'x2'x'3 interior, 2" polyisocyanurate foam insulation) and a couple of two gallon square buckets. Ice goes into the clean buckets and then I drink the melt water. This saves me from having to carry in 10 gallons of water AND it means that I don't have to carry out the cooler melt water which is considered "gray water" and cannot be dumped on the playa even if treated. Have fun and give the man my regards! I can't make it this year but next year for sure! Jake

So the sound is a bit like a popcorn popper?

A bit, similar to a dirty input connection when you wiggle it.

@@JakevonSlatt I found the problem, a 22pf capacitor was failed. First time, the noise sounds like a transistor. Best Regards.
