I was an electronics bench tech. You take for granted having the proper tools etc.. But that soldering iron needs to be proper! Bought one of those kits they sell and man that soldering iron almost ruined a simple bulb replacement. Nice videos, Thank You

Thanks for this. I just inspected all my 1983 Yamaha equipment and it looks great and sounds as it should. I bet my ears work at a level that I couldn't tell anyway lol. I have all the tools and half the skill, so I hope to find an easy one to fix someday.

Great videos, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience! It is so rewarding to keep these wonderful masterpieces of HiFi engineering alive. At the age of 71, I look back at amplifiers and receivers I would have liked to have when I was young, but could not afford, and tbey are still running thanks to guys like you. Thank you.

Thanks for sharing that information. Those tools are very basic. What other tools are necessary at an intermediate level? A variac? An oscilloscope? If so, does range matter? Signal generator? Test probes, jumpers, etc? I do have some electronic experience, but it's literally been decades. I'd like to get back into it, but not having the necessary tools is VERY frustrating. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
@vintageaudioaddict
@vintageaudioaddict 4 года назад
Your welcome, thanks for watching. Yes to all, LOL. I didn't see you mention a digital multi-meter. Just that can take you a long way. With a scope and meter you are 95% of the way there. A dim bulb tester is good to use and cheaper then a variac. If you google "dim bulb tester" there are many instructions on how to build one for a few dollars.
@ottodydaktyk
@ottodydaktyk 4 года назад
@@vintageaudioaddict thank you. Yes, I have a DVM, just forgot to mention it. I will look into the dim bulb tester. Thanks for responding, most don't seem to have the time. I agree with you regarding the solder removal tool. I still have a Soldapult spring loaded solder sucker, it works ok, but the tool you have looks to be far superior. Best regards.

@@redbike1986Hi, I been fixing audio equipment for many years, more than 40. Still have my first analog oscilloscope. The times are changing, now I have a digital Agilent scope and some Fluke multimeters I have one 28 series 2 and one 289. I bought one Rigol oscilloscope due the protocol sniffter, is posible to decode RS232, I2c, and various commun comunications protocols. Today is necesary a hot air station and powerful soldering iron, I bought one Yihua 150 watts high frecuency soldering iron and is wonderful. Lead free solder is a real problem without a powerful soldering. Cheers.

@@vintageaudioaddict I have a Sansui 9090db that the right channel on all 3 speaker settings, doesn't work at all. Seemed like when I retrieved it from the dump 20 years ago, it would cut in and out before the red light of death would shut her down, but over the last few years when plugging it in after rediscovering it after moving or rearranging the basement, it doesn't work at all anymore. Do you have any recommendations for sourcing quality replacement parts, tips for troubleshooting/diagnostics, or parts you're interested in selling to help this here beginner revive the beast that solidified my passion for vintage audio from the Golden age? It can't hurt, especially if the circuit traces are robust and not prone to lifting. If you reckon a solder join could go be prone to going dry, just refresh I'd say

I know that you didn't ask me, but I'll chime in here. I used to work as a technician and we bought a cheap "biscuit" fan that ran on 110v, put a cord on it and put it on our desk with the air being pulled away from us. This worked quite well. Also, after handling solder, don't smoke or eat without washing your hands. I hope this helps.

Filter electrolytic caps can make problems in some circuits if they are bulging/swollen and/or if their ESR increases a lot. Then they are a good candidate for replacement, *Cheers!*

Please can you help me. I love my vintage audio so much, but people who did not know what they are doing have screwed everything up, done actual damage. I temporarily live in Pittsburgh area, but would bring my precious Polks and stackable turntable, Cd Players, tape deck, etc. to anyone who,knows how to get them back in shape. Or if you know anybody in this area, please recommend. The guys before cost me a fortune, told me I needed a needle, but no, it was a bent tone arm (not bent before they got hold of it) and didn't even know what a cartridge was). My life is so,sad without my music and I want it back. There is no way a digital speaker can ever produce the warm, emotionally deep music that comes out of LPs on an excellent turntable out of reverberating Polks. Bliss. Can you recommend someone to help. I don't care if they're in New York, if they can do the job. Thanks.

When soldering using any tool please use a small fan to blow the fumes away from yourself. This is especially true for old lead/ tin solder. A face mask may fog up your glasses, mine are cheaters so yeah I'm old,, and you won't be able to see the very fine work your doing.
