Your iron deposit is probably the old ruins in the middle of the lake, where the old civilization dug and set up a mining camp. But, of course, they depleted it long ago ... and you are finding the dredge.
I use both, the rope ladders are useful for exploration of caves, so if the cave is empty we can easily pick them up. Normal ladders are used when i know i am coming back
