"Are vintage and AUTHENTIC patterns the same?". The next in this series I call Vintage vs. Reproduction, is a the branded Laura Ashley nightgown that boasts the "AUTHENTIC" label. I will be comparing this original 1980's vintage sewing pattern to its modern reproduction by the same company, McCall's M8381 made just this year in 2023.
I have been a vintage pattern seller for 10 years and have always been asked, why I don't like the reproduction patterns. I knew they used block patterns to adjust the vintage patterns. I knew they looked at only the front covers and guessed on the rest, but now I want to put them to the test.
This sewing pattern review is meant to help you make the reproduction sewing pattern if you want to make it look more original to the vintage, or to help you decide if the reproduction is even worth purchasing.
Will this be another vintage reproduction pattern rant?
I am doing this series so that everyone can see which vintage reproduction patterns are worth your time and money, and which belong in the dumpster.

As a person who lives in Canada, I can explain the new pajama thing. Winter. Getting really cold. It is the time of year when you tell the children to put on an extra sweater if cold, because the heating bill is too high already. Until we downsized to a house with a wood stove instead of gas, we were spending 300 a month on the budget plan. We kept the hose at 62F. Hate to think what it costs to heat a normal size house 5 years later. So put an extra sweater on is a common speech given to children, along with do not stand with the door open. Come in or get out. You are letting the heat out. So, brand new, homemade flannellet pj's or a nightgown are extremely welcomed. Especially if you get the matching robe. The fabric you buy is much thicker than the thin, you can read a newspaper threw it fabric used in the pre made ones. So if you have an aunt, grandmother or mom who can sew, she will make you the warm, cozy ones. The other tradition is getting to open one present Christmas Eve and it is always the new pajamas or nightgown. That way you get to be warm that night.

LAURAL ASHLEY!! Sheer PERFECTION! Even McCalls couldn't 'improve' on Her designs and I'm guessing that's why the 'new' pattern is EXACTLY the same as the old pattern. During the 1980s I sewed quite a few magnificent dresses and sleepwear designed by Laura Ashley. I adored her style, patterns, fabric choices and prints and still do even though at over 70 years old, I'm no longer a voluptuous, svelte size 16 (more like a corpulent, dowager matron size 22) 😐🤥😂

Hearing you call 1985 "Vintage" makes me feel so old!! I learned to sew in a summer school class between 7th and 8th grades, 1970. Clothes in the 80's were so classy! I remember when patterns were just one size and had much more detailed and clear instructions. Multi-sized patterns are hard to read and aren't engineered as well for fitting together. I even remember when the size chart changed in the 70's, patterns were marked "New Sizing", they haven't changed since. When companies go with Letter (xs, s, m, etc.) sizes, instead of individual numbers (8, 10, 12, etc.) then the measurements are adjusted up a little and down a little to fit a wider variety of bodies. Ready to wear did the same thing.

I remember seeing that pattern back in the Eighties! I made it from three shades of the same fabric. The robe was white, the butterfly sleeved gown was pale yellow and I made a long-sleeved gown in mint green. I wore them for years and the robe was in tatters by the time I parted with it. As I recall, the nightgowns were tight across the shoulders, a problem I had never experienced before. It wasn’t a problem for the sleeveless gown but I think I had to let out the armholes on the back.(if that makes sense). I would buy the reproduction pattern just for the robe pattern but I’m (cough) curvier these days and there’s no “X” in their sizing options. More’s the pity. I want to buy or make myself a long robe in a lightweight fabric. Mostly all robes for sale are knee length in chunky fabrics. 😩. Greetings from NB, 🇨🇦

My understanding is that the Christmas pajamas tradition comes from the Icelandic Christmas folklore of the Jólakötturinn or Yule Cat. 🐱 To quote Smithsonian Magazine: “For most kids who celebrate Christmas, new clothes probably sit just above lumps of coal on the good present scale. But according to an Icelandic tradition, getting new socks before Christmas might just save your life. That’s because the Jólakötturinn, or Yule Cat, eats anyone who hasn’t received new clothes by the time Christmas rolls around”. The concept of Pajamas/Pyjamas come from India. It came with the huge boom of Indian import of textiles, a production that they still excel in today! Other similarly anglicised words of Indian fabrics/materials include gingham and khaki. As for wearing them in Christmas time photos, no idea there.

Pajama pants for everyone at Christmas is a nice project even a beginner can sew for the family. Now the big 4 can manage to even mess up drafting elastic waist pajamas to where they don’t fit, but after one year of drop crotch pjs most will figure out what to do next time. The fleece lounge pants, with cell phone pocket on the side seam, are the one gift that was widely accepted and loved from age 10-65.

Many years ago I purchased patterns in the size I wore ready made. After watching your videos, I actually looked at the bust size. Aargh, I just bought a pattern by bust size, and it is 2 sizes bigger than the ready-made size I wear daily. Glad you are looking at pattern pieces today, because I am gonna measure the heck out of every spot. It is multi sizes, so I am bound to fit something in that envelope. I also never made a paper copy before, but plan to reuse this one. I used to use the finished garment as the pattern. I do remember when the cost of these things was closer to the cost of instant destruct paper than a hardback college textbook. I ordered a second pattern Tuesday. I notice my hips are still at least a size smaller than my bust. I miss having clothes that FIT, I used to adjust the back neck length and so on. I am so out of practice after 30 years of ready-made. In the meantime I am almost done moving my sewing workstation.

I have been a professional dressmaker for 50+ years, and at one point I opened a bridal shop where we made custom wedding gowns, but I also carried a few lines of ready made. The retail clothing sizes are nothing like pattern sizes and in fact, size charts vary from company to company! Higher priced companies, like what is found at Saks Fifth Avenue, use smaller size labels than do the average Sears or JC Penney sizes. I always wondered why, but I believe the answer is that the smaller sizes make those rich ladies feel better about themselves so they spend more $!

Don't sewing patterns provide the finished measurements, in addition to the "to fit" measurements, so that you know how much ease the pattern provides? I have 1000% more experience with knitting patterns than sewing patterns, and for those, they typically (not always) provide both the "to fit" sizing as well as the finished size. I haven't sewn a garment myself in a number of years, but I helped a new sewist a few years ago who had ended up with something that was incredibly oversized, and I pointed out the note at the bottom of the back of the envelope that said what the finished size would be. There was a ton of ease. She could have picked a smaller size and ended up with something that fit her the way she wanted.
@StephanieCanada
@StephanieCanada 8 месяцев назад
The new ones do. The vintage ones only ever provided “finished back length” and other measurements of that kind. Not finished garment measures at the bust/waist/hips.

I have quite a few 1980s clothes in my wardrobe, that I've been wearing on and off (weight dependent) since new. Does that make me a vintage dresser 😊? I had wondered whether the sizing thing was down to a preference for ease esp in nightwear. That said, the original is 80s not 50s where slim fitting daywear was on a girdled body.

"The History of Pajamas and the Myth of Coco Chanel" by youtuber Nicole Rudolph explores the origins of Pajamas, which is a slightly different history then the origins of sleepwear in the west generally. The broad overview for sleepwear in the west is that Europeans use to sleep in their undergarments; men's shirts use to go to their knees, women wore shifts/chemises under their corsets and those were the garments people would keep on after otherwise undressing and then just sleep in. Typically people tried not to wash their outer layers (dresses, skirts, jackets, pants) but did ideally change-out their undergarments everyday; men and woman very typically aimed to have a week's worth of the base layer item, so that some could be clean to wear while others were in the wash pile / being washed (before washing machines, people often could afford to pay a laundress to do their laundry because labor was less expensive then materials before the 20th century and then economics did a flip-around gradually from the 20th and into the 21th century). Pajamas then have their own unique history (covered by Nicole's video) because they don't relate back to those base garments but on something entirely different.

I am very curious. How long have you been sewing clothing? I made my first wearable school outfit in 4th grade 4 H. My aunt helped me and no pattern. 2 piece . A skirt and sleeveless slip over blouse. The same year, a girl a year older , made me a cute dress for Christmas. It was so nice, 9 years later I made my wedding gown on an old threadle machine in my dorm room. Of coutse I made ALL my clothes until My life became too hectic in my mid 30s. I once spent $17.00 for a very intricate vogue pattern. It was very difficult and had a gazillion pieces. it took a couple weeks. It came out very nice. I made a flannel robe and a nice dressy long formal. I wore them for years. I had to alter patterns while still in middle school. I was the oldest of 4 girls. I helped them start sewing. I taught Mama to sew. My baby sister paid me to create her collage wardrobe. I loved sewing. My husbands elderly aunt was an alterations lady. She sewed beautifully up until her late 70s. My older cousin taught sewing at job core for years. She even made mens suits. She also made exquisite cakes. She made my wedding cake and my parents unbelievable 25th anniversary party cake. Dont let a complicated pattern scare you. I really enjoy your videos. BUT MAY be forced to not watch any more I am highly offended at you taking Gods name in vain. Public profanity is still illegal too.

The size discrepancy is because the person in charge of the copy for the size chart on the new pattern copied from McCall's modern patterns ... just find a size block and insert it in the publishing software. Whereas the person in charge of reproducing the pattern pieces was working with vintage pieces, scanning them ... and inserted the new soizing onto the old pieces.

I think the difference between this pattern and other vintage patterns you have compared is that possibly the 1985 pattern was originally drafted and graded on a computer so they had the original computer files to just reprint from, aside from building in the extra ease for whatever reason. those older vintage patterns were originally drafted and graded by hand, then reproduced on a computer by someone who had inferior pattern drafting skills than the person who originally hand drafted them

For a second, I was like "well those quarter inches can add up!!!" ...It's a nightgown. The quarter inches are not going to add up in something that is not fitted, self.

Then there's the new Simplicity 9845 labelled as 1950s but clearly (& confirmed as) 1968 reproduction ... yes, I know it's a typo but aren't we paying for this sort of thing to be corrected before publication?

I looked up the Simplicity pattern 9845. I remember making this in the late1960's, Probably 1969 after learing to sew in 8th grade. It is going to be interesting to see how it measures up when a comparison is done.

i wonder if they had the digital files for this and just converted it to their current system? it would have been interesting to see if they had to figure out how to hook up 80s hardware to modern stuff! i wonder if their reproduction employees felt called out enough by disgruntled sewers to put the effort in xD

Someone told me once that they are still drafting patterns from blocks from the 1950's. This would explain why things do not fit the way that we expect. Is this true? Does anyone know?

hey Steph, is the solid red shirt you are wearing part of the outfit that Rebecca picked out for you when y'all shopped for each other in a thrift store a couple of months ago? I remember she picked out a bright solid top with a print skit and it looked so cute on you...but now I am thinking the top was maybe orange? ANYWAY the red top looks very cute on you. lol....hey at least you know I watch you and Rebecca's channels hahha.

I used to be a courseware developer and technical writer about 25-35 years ago, prior to starting my own handmade, decorative ceramic mosaic tile business. The downsizing of printed material started when I was a writer, to save cost on ink and paper. during printing. As for color, cost of a 2-color print job is more expensive than just black ink. And you thought it was your age/eyes. LOL Sadly no. It is no longer about the consumer and profit, rather just profit. We are now in the life-of-service to SELF era; not OTHERS.

Well now, if you are living in Florida and you don't need this/these patterns then I'll buy them from you. Of course, for the price you paid but, I will pay for the postage and maybe give a decent tip, after all, it is America. Or is it Canada? Alaska? .....Over THERE, where it is possible to get reasonably priced cloth and an immense choice.
