Earlier I did a very brief review of this Workmate 625 and finally was able to do the full review comparing this bench to several of the newer versions. It is very interesting to see how the Workmate series of benches has evolved and changed over the years in terms of style and engineering. If you find this video useful, please press the like button and share with your friends. And, as always, good luck on your projects.

Thank you for your video. I have used workmates as part of my home and mobile workshop. Lucky to have found a Mk3 made in 1972 in Ireland, this will be a restoration project for the future.

I bought a 79001 type 2 for $5 at a yard sale. Barely used. It is a tank. The type 2 is 30.5 pounds according to the Workmate cult members! Basically the same as the 600 series here.

Found one of the exact table you have for the vintage workmate. San Diego up in the alleys above OB. Guess they thought it was trash. I will beg to differ. Never had one. Very cool.

great video. They should have kept it made with the screw and metal parts. but that progress

I agree. It would have been interesting to sit in on the design decisions. I really wish they still made the 2000. I would love to have one that was in good shape.

I'm curious how you decided that this Workmate is a "625"? It matches almost exactly the model that was sold in the U.S. in 1975-76 as the 79-001 Type 2. The only thing that doesn't match are the black and orange plastic handles, which are from a later model. Have you looked at the bottom surface of the jaws? Most of the early models had their model/type information stamped there.
@WorkMateGuy

Hi Chris - I couldn't find any markings on this Workmate. I did a visual comparison to other Workmates on line that were identified to come away with the model number you see here. Thanks for stopping by and posting your question.

@@WorkMateGuy You should definitely take a look at my website dedicated to the early U.S. Workmate 79-001 models from 1974-1982. The address is h-frame.weebly.com It has a detailed type study of the 79-001, a type identification flowchart, downloadable documents, and much more fascinating stuff for any fan of vintage Workmates. You say you couldn't find markings, but I would recommend that you carefully examine the entire bottom surface of the jaws again in good light, just in case you missed a faded ink stamp there. It's highly likely that the one you have is a 79-001 Type 2, but with replacement handles. Take a look at the details of the Type 2 at my website, and you'll see the match to yours. The numbering situation was complicated, but there are many owners on the web that misidentify theirs as a 625, which then misleads others into thinking they have a 625. The number 625 was used only for Workmates sold in the UK, and its full name was actually WM625. Two versions of the WM625 were imported to the U.S., briefly in 1977 and 1978, in very small numbers, but they were rebadged for the U.S.as the 79-001 Type 3 and 79-001 Type 5. Unlike yours, the frames of these UK-made models were painted a bright blue, so they are easy to identify. Your Type 2 was made in Canada, like all the other Workmates made in this period for the North American market.

Hi Chris - You have a very nice website and it is obvious you have spent a great deal of time assembling the information you have there. I will have to pull this bench out of storage and take another look for the markings to see what I can come up with. Cheers!

The rivets on my workmate 425 type 6 have gotten really loose. So much that I've had to replace a couple of them with nuts and bolts, only owning it after about a year or year and half. I've owned it now for I think 3½-4 years but I still really enjoy using it. It was a Christmas gift from my roommate/ex-boyfriend.

Am I the only person who has noticed on the 625 (and other older ones like my 79-001) that you can push 1/2" steel pipes through the top-board support brackets? Now you can have side extensions (with or without legs) to support longer workpieces, or you can link two Workmates together.

Hi John great workmate hiw to videos. I have a WM 225 with one board missing (the one not connected to the adjusting screws) and was thinking of making 2 board tops (duplicating the original one I have so both are even thickness) what is the dimensions of the 2nd board and is it possible to make 3 boards like the 425 and if so what are the dimensions of those boards? Thx in advance.
@WorkMateGuy
@WorkMateGuy 5 лет назад
Hey Texas Crossbow Dude - I don't have the 225 but I suspect the panels are very similar if not identical. This video details the dimensions of the replacement panels I made for the 425 which may just work for you. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OKKEV7VcnhU.html Let me know how this works out for you. Hello John. I've seen many complaints from people who compare older WM's to the newer WM 425 and other current models. How would you rate the sturdiness of the new ones? Are they still acceptable and not totally flimsy as some people suggest? In the beginning of the video I've noticed you had a black painted WM on the left. Which model was that and why did you chose to review the grey 425 version? Are they the same vintage?
@WorkMateGuy
@WorkMateGuy 2 года назад
Some good questions. Balancing weight and sturdiness is a delicate feat to accomplish. As for me the 425 is more that strong enough for the work I have done with it and still not too heavy to move around. Older workmates are hard to find any more so I review the ones I can get my hands on. Cheers!

I just got a hold of a WM Type 2 1st Iteration (with aluminum centers for the plastic knobs and the 4-rib front step). Solid with no wiggle when fully unfolded. Love it! The only knock against the older versions is that they're slightly more effort to fold and unfold. The Type 1 and 2's are made with mostly aluminum and metal while the later types (later Type 4 and up) are made of thinner steel for lower weight and not comparable in terms of sturdiness.

Wasted quality and durability in order to keep the price competitive. At least B&D standardize most rubber parts and we can repair these in most cases. I am currently restoring a 425 that I found at a thrift store and was surprised to find parts for it. So many other companies just force you to buy new ones. Anyway, great comparison.
