Nice job. I inherited my dad's Workmate as well. The top on his is a plywood. Yours looked to be partical board. I am thinking of replacing the top, not because it's damaged, just something to do. I added a 1/2" plywood shelf on the bottom and recently found a tip to build a "dog kennel" to hold the spare dogs that do into the holes in the top. Keeps them handy.
Stair tread was a great idea. I just inherited one of these from my grandfather and plan to replace the top as its messed up, not nearly as bad as yours was! Thanks for the video
Thank you very much for the video. I’ve had a Workmate 200 for at least 30 years which has similar problems with the wood as yours did. I received a Workmate 225 for Christmas this year, so I plan to replace the wood on the old Workmate 200 and give it to my youngest son. I’ll also have to replace a broken handle, which I was able to find online. Again, thank you for the video.
Don't recall what size they were. For the holes that go all the way though, I picked a drill bit that was slightly bigger than the bolt used. Then used a significantly bigger drill bit for the recessed hole.
Great sturdy chunks on your work surface now, a vast improvement… 👏🏻 Are you not going to bother with the dog holes the original work surface had - they can be very useful holding boards in place? Have also found pipe insulation to be useful, when cut in half and fitted over the jaw edges, to protect workpieces you may not wish to risk marking… 🤷🏼♂️
