Ikanaide (Please Don't Go Away) is the theme song for a late '80s Japanese TV drama series about the life of Yoshiko Yamaguchi (also known as Li Xianglan) composed and sung by legendary singer and composer Koji Tamaki. It's a masterpiece in composition, orchestral execution and song. Koji's singing is filled with pain, sadness and yearning, and the solo instrumental sections echo those sentiments, while the orchestral sections ebb and flow in sincere musical expression. And the ironic beauty of the string section pulling on heartstrings is rather profound. The rhythmic harmonies of the piano is like a constant companion, providing support and comfort. Yoshiko Yamaguchi was a very compelling person: she was born in China to Japanese parents, grew up and became a prominent singer and actress loved by the Chinese. Li Xianglan was her Chinese name. After WWII, her Japanese heritage was uncovered and she was deported to Japan, narrowly avoiding execution. She was heartbroken, as China had always been her homeland and Japan was foreign to her. The lyrics for Ikanaide is a reflection of her parting from her birthplace and the Chinese who loved her.
