As a professional recorder player I can say that everything is possible on the recorder, eddy is just not capable to do it 😂

I am here to defend the recorder. 1. You can do vibrato on recorder but a violinist like Eddy can’t (just like a beginner violinist can’t do vibrato) 2. You can gliss (just like a clarinet in the start of rhapsody in blue) 3. You can do chords. Through multiphonics. And if you perfectly hum the fifth while playing the tonic, you will create the illusion of the third as well. 4. There is extended technique for the recorder such as the previously mentioned multiphonics and there are many wacky ways to achieve a vibrato effect. Thus I conclude recorder is the truly superior instrument. EDIT: everyone out here thinking im some recorder pro when I’m a teenage French horn player whose watched about an hour of recorder tutorials on RU-vid.

I know this is a skit video and it's all a joke but for those who don't know so much about the recorder (and possibly believe only these stereotypes), allow me to shed some light on the recorder from a professional perspective. (FYI - I'm a recorder graduate of Birmingham Conservatoire, UK, albeit no longer involved in music at all) 1) Range - while more limited than other woodwinds to typically just a little over 2 octaves, the true range, with some careful body movements (called kneestops) and learning some more complex fingerings (plus more air!), the range actually increases to 2 1/2 octaves. Let's also not forget that there's a huge family of recorders ranging from the subcontrabass (lowest note is the bottom F of a piano) right up to the garklein (highest note is a top C on the 7-octave piano) and everything in between. So you may need to change instruments mid piece (which some require!) Modern instruments can act like flutes and have a semitone extension downwards with similar-looking keys too. If one has a decent enough instrument and gets the right air pressure (as well as not relying too much on the upper register), it's possible to hit the 3rd octave. To put this into perspective, the treble recorder (a size smaller than what Eddy's playing and the most commonly used) could theoretically hit the top C and D of a flute, and potentially even to the F above that (the highest F on the piano!). The Martin Helder models have several keys which make this even easier to achieve. 2) Tremolo - this isn't really an effect wind instruments play to begin with, at least not on a repeated note, but when the time comes for it, we use the tongue, usually double but sometimes triple depending on the rhythm. To achieve this, a variety of syllables are needed to be sounded (d-g, t-k, did-'ll, etc) when tonguing rapidly but in a way so as to not tire the tongue out. 3) Dynamics - always a tricky thing to do on a (largely) keyless instrument but achievable by using a combination of varying air pressure with alternative fingerings. In the extremities, this is harder to do but still somewhat possible. Again, modern instruments with keys often have an easier time doing this due to being more similar to a flute and having greater control. 4) Vibrato - vibrato is done with the diaphragm and can, like the violin, be altered in terms of speed. The fundamental principle is the same as other wind instruments but due to the lack of resistance a recorder has, there is less pressure needed. Not to mention it's not easy to control with little resistance! Alternatives can be finger vibrato (which can be found in early French baroque music) or even over the labium (the hole at the top where the sound comes from) in modern music. 5) Glissando - this is actually a modern technique which isn't that hard to perform over a couple of notes. It gets harder when it goes over the break (think Rhapsody in Blue's opening clarinet solo) but still pretty possible (albeit with a lot of practice). A common feature in modern repertoire. 6) Chords - two methods of this: 1) multiphonic fingerings, again, common in modern music, and much like other wind instruments, they don't always sound the most musical like a violin might but they still exist! 2) USE TWO RECORDERS AT THE SAME TIME!!! Check Ishii's 'Black Intention' for a fantastic example of this. It's tricky to coordinate your right hand to do left hand fingering, but still possible! 7) Tone - yeah...it can be that bad...especially on cheap plastic things (much like cheap violins) 8) Price - 400 bucks for a recorder, a proper one, is NOT expensive. Due to the wide range of woods used in making recorders (which make up the bulk of a price difference), the prestige of makers, factory vs handmade, and additional details that could be added e.g. extra keys, decoration, adjusting the build for comfort (see tenor recorder vs knick tenor recorder), the prices can add up. The size and pitch can also influence the price. So a sopranino, the second smallest in the family, made of ebony would be much more expensive than one made of maple (or, of course, plastic). But a sopranino made of ebony will most certainly be cheaper than a treble made of ebony. The bigger recorders, such as the Paetzold range, can hit up to almost 7000USD for just the instrument alone. Consider that a professional often needs at least a dozen or so instruments on average to cover most repertoire, the individual prices aren't great but the collective price is! 9) Reputation - it IS getting better these days. Notable players include Michala Petri, Piers Adams, Jill Kemp, Dan Laurin, Giovanni Antonini, Maurice Steger, the late Frans Bruggen (and his son Daniel), Bertho Driever, Ross Winters, Grace Barton, and so on. Obviously, far fewer than the violin, but let's not forget the recorder lay in near non-existence for well over 150 years! 10) Alternative techniques - this is probably the biggest surprise for anyone learning about recorder as there is a LOT you can do! For example (including previously mentioned things here): - multiphonics - playing 2 instruments simultaneously - kneestops - varieties of vibrato (over the labium, finger holes, etc) - glissandi - microtones (MUCH easier to do on recorder than other instruments) - imitating other instruments, such as the shakuhachi by blowing directly over the mouthpiece instead of into it, or like a bottle with the body only - removing the headjoint and using that alone - blowing over fingerholes like a flute - harmonics (yes they exist!) - overtones - finger slapping on the fingerholes - singing and playing at the same time - knocking the body with a ring (see Leenhouts On the Trail of the Pink Panther) Hopefully, that cleared a few things up for you all! :) TL;DR - I'm a former recorder graduate who wanted to dispel myths of the recorder and hope this video didn't just reinforce stereotypes!

The recorder actually has a range of around 2 octaves, and if you ever need more there's always alto, tenor, and bass recorders...careful though I've found wooden ones costing over 1.6k Also look for a guy called Recorder Legend his videos are top quality hahahaha

Seeing the recorder gave me intense war flashbacks during my grade school days. It was traumatizing.

How ironic that when I was encouraged by Two Set videos to learn an instrument, I chose the recorder!! That was a year ago. Now I’m studying for grade 4, and am learning the treble and sopranino as well as the descant. TwoSet’s light-hearted approach has kept me going despite my first disastrous public performance and my exam nerves. It’s amazing to feel part of a musical community through TwoSet’s channel and also Sarah Jeffery’s recorder channel 😆

I've been playing recorder for 10 years now. The "flauto dolce" is capable of surprisingly controlled sound and dynamic changes, provided that one can execute them :D Also, there's not much you can get out of the soprano recorder, it's build practically prevents it from sounding tolerable even in pro's hands (search for alto, tenor or bass recorders, it's rly something different). Saying all that, I don't argue with any of the points made (n.9 and 10 hit rly close to home :D), but beware, what you mock may one day rise against you (recorder-viola gang?)

One time in primary school, we were having a recorder lesson because the school thought it was important to get everyone to play an instrument. Anyway at the end of the lesson our teacher told us to clean the instruments by shaking them gently to get the water droplets out. The guy sitting next to me starts shaking it violently above his head and one section came off and flew across the room. It missed the teacher by only like 10cm and the teacher went mental. We never saw that teacher again lol.
