Me too it's the first time that I see Virgil playing Jazz, and from 9:30 until the end, his fills are just amazing ! (It's ALMOST played with the same wonderful and incomparable fluidity than these of Dave Weckl...) ;-)

I believe he played some rare jazzy stuff on the "Serious Young Insects" (by On the Virg) album.

I get what you mean, but I believe metric modulation would happen if they then stayed at that different tempo for a longer time. Since they just go "out" for a short time it would be called a polyrhythmic phrase, or a phrase using groupings, but no modulation. They're still "feeling" the beat the same way as in the rest of the song, just doing a polyrhythmic phrase over it. If you're interested, the most interesting example of metric modulation I've come across is the song "Cognitive Contortions", by Animals as Leaders.

Craig Stobie someone at his level is not looking to do a perfect cover like you are thinking. His caliber of playing is many level above some of the best drummers in the world. Needless to say, the guy could do it any way he likes.

His style does not work with the raw intensity it takes to play ZEP. He is not better or worse, Just different!
