Virgil unbound: Italian Alps ruin becomes dream budget home

When his wife inherited a ruined stable in Italy’s Orobic Alps, architect Alfredo Vanotti reenvisioned the space as a family home, reflecting local craftsmanship and his love of modern design.
To daylight the home, Vanotti created a long skylight and four large windows facing the Valtellina Valley below. To create exterior walls that resembled the “dry stone” technique of the region’s traditional homes, he used local stone and a minimal amount of cement to hold it together.
For the interior, Vanotti used reinforced concrete, along with natural larch and iron, to give the home a more modern feel. “Concrete is misused,” he explains. “It shouldn’t be perfect. The advantage of concrete: it shouldn’t be smooth, beautiful, precise.” The fireplace, sink, bidet, shower, and toilet are all custom-designed from unfinished concrete. To showcase the material’s imperfections, Vanotti chose to leave the material untreated and uncovered. “Concrete is a refined material. You don’t have to hide it.”
With just a “small budget” and relying on help from his father, Vanotti transformed the ruin into a weekend home for his family over the course of five years. He designed the home from the ground up, including the kitchen sink. Everything was designed by the architect, including the concrete sink/bidet/toilet and fireplace. Nearly every detail was personalized, like the door/cupboard handles made from strips of leather.

The bones of the structure, the walls floors, and stairs express the modernist esthetic: but the home lacks comfort...the toilets are a hardship, so are the dining room chairs. I could not bear a home without a soft, comfortable couch to curl up on, and comfortable, cushioned seating. This is modernism bordering on stoicism. The design is beautiful, the use of light is brilliant, the view is breathtaking.

@zhbroder

@William Webber i have to agree with the clown about the finishes. while the bugatti comparison demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding about both the bugatti brand and design sensibilities in general.. it sure did look like corners were cut here. for budget reasons? perhaps. but i do feel like this is design - to a point. "the stools are meant for a mountain home if you don't like them sit on the other side" simple cushions could easily solve this problem, and they could be stored so as to not ruin the brutal aesthetic. certainly the concrete toilet and bidet is an impractical solution, and the kitchen tap is where i agree with the clown. definitely could've at least found a better looking nozzle and hose. i love the house overall, but this architect does seem a bit stubborn with his design which will make things difficult. his fireplace in his barn renovation for example.. he easily could've mounted one of the glass panes on a hinge, but no he reaches into the fire like someone going for that far bit of food past the cafeteria sneeze guard. and that glass is HOT. just little things. i think therein lies the issue. these are all little things, while the overall effect is so well achieved. very italian.
@hamptons2945
@hamptons2945 4 года назад
@William Webber looooool I was paying complement to your use of the metaphor of Rembrant and using a comparison, unlucky for you you do not know of whether or not I "do nothing", I most definitely do, however if I, the architect or my family decides to present something on a public forum I would take the criticism, good or bad! and I have given MY opinion and it was both good and bad. My other comment says the outside and stairs in this house are beautiful. However some are lacking. What does seem to ring true, and also verified by your most recent comment is that you are merely just a keyboard warrior "clown". How about you come out of your house and have a proper debate and we will see if you use such language in public. Other than that you should probably mind your business as the initial comment has nothing to do with you, unless you are the man that built this house. and if you are take my opinion, live learn or take it with a pinch of salt. The sad thing for you is you have no humour. and thats your life. this is just one more comment for me and move on.

The fact that the fireplace leaves marks on the wooden floor isn't "cool because it shows it's used" it's just a design flaw and a huge hazard. this explains why for centuries fireplaces have had stone or metal pads inserted in the floors in front of them... the house wouldn't be too bad if the guy wasn't this pretentious.

this man is very immature and built his family an unsafe uncomfortable house, "handles" are uncomfortable to use, countertops have holes in them so hard to clean, same with other surfaces, no railing on the stairs, loft and next to a bedroom door, master and kids bedroom right next to each other with the top open so no privacy at all, uncomfortable chairs with the edges of chairs being sharp, i didn't see any couches or a fireplace that is functional either, the kitchen is an uncomfortable disappointment and the storage boxes do not have gliders so they don't slide in or out easily.... very poorly designed all around.

The fireplace issue could be solved fairly inexpensively by framing it in with glass and adding an outside air inlet. Depending on chimney, it is currently wide open rock, make a sheet metal insert with a damper that will adapt to 6 or 8 inch chimney material, dependent on draft requirements. This is an absolutely fantastic place!

As an owner, hands-on renovator of multiple projects over my life time (thanks Dad for giving me the bug), I like most just have to shake my head over the many flaws built into this house. I love the location though. Too bad the stairs are deadly, for adults and kids. The toilets! enough said about them. And yes concrete is cheap, and great! Duh? The under the stairs drawers are too deep and need a set of runners to operate smoothly. It's like a total beginner built this place, Yikes!

The under-stairs drawers are what actually surprised me the most about this - after the open loft and stairs (although in fairness, one does see open stairs shockingly frequently in European designs). As an architect, he *should* have the training to have dealt with the storage drawers much more effectively. It's really not that difficult, nor would it have added noticeably to the overall cost of the place.

This is when someone is trying too hard. It could have been so beautiful. The stairs don’t bother me too badly. But a glass piece could have been used as a rail upstairs with the same effect. I have to say thanks to Kirsten Dirksen for filming all these clever and innovative homes. What a lot of effort you have gone to! This architect is skilled and articulate, and his juxtaposition of materials is inspired - but at the end of the video I still did not feel this home would be that comfortable to live in, even as a summer house. It's a squat toilet. Concrete is a bad idea because it's porous and bacteria CAN grow within it over time and sufficient moisture (and you will have to use special products to treat it because the bacteria live inside the concrete, not on the surface and scrubbing it will only kill the surface bacteria). We use porcelain because it's not porous and doesn't take in water like concrete does.

@tubsent
@tubsent 7 лет назад
I'd say it's because people imagine themselves living in it and complain about the stuff that would bother them. When you're demoing something like a house, which you have to live with day in, day out, I guess that aspect comes to the forefront even more and the form over function decisions (which in this house are quite obvious and at times towards the extreme end as with the example you mention) apparently grate on people. The designer knows his own crossover point for the form/function dilemma and on top of that knowing that it's his own design, surely makes him more tolerant with respect to some sacrificed comforts (designing and making your own concrete toilet vs someone choosing it for you). Given all of this, the negative comments aren't all the surprising, are they - people don't judge the house on its own, but from the position of what it would be like for them to live in it.

Appart from the location which is stunning, and the building which wasn't his work, everything else is dysfunctional and dangerous in the case of the railing upstairs. He justifies certain decisions as design intentions but they are really just facade for lazyness and poor planning. It really gets on my nerves when I see irresponsibility in design, especially when it comes to safety. I mean it is enraging that he told his daughter to "be carefull" and just install a flimsy railing upstairs, unsupported and of such small cross section.
@ixlnxs
@ixlnxs 6 лет назад
I'm not even sure about the location. Everything you see to the north is a natural park. Great view, but no shops, no entertainment and no freedom of movement: human beings are only welcome as polite guests. Everything to the south is heavily industrialized countryside. Not much overpriced coffee and avocado toast to be found there, either. Staple diet for a hipster like him. And then the house itself. Why was it a ruin? Perhaps because of the frequent forest fires and mudslides, which wiped several nearby villages off the map over the past few decades? Or was there another reason why his in-laws neglected the house? Once the novelty of long and dark Siberian winters begins to wear off, we'll find out.

@noviceprepper5397
@noviceprepper5397 7 лет назад
if the fireplace did not have a chimney to let out smoke the living room and entire house would've been filled with smoke. there was a chimney but from what little I think I know about traditionally built fireplaces, they are not very efficient, something like under 20% efficient (most of the heat goes up the chimney), so if I were fortunate enough to have a traditionally built fireplace I believe I'd buy a wood burning insert for it as those are, I've heard, much more efficient, putting much more heat into the home and requiring much less wood than traditionally made fireplaces

@@gbekkema - Are you saying the beard and coat signify unsanitary cement toilets, showers, and kitchen counters? Do the beard and coat signify a safety issues with no hearth and no stair railing? I;ve been watching this kind of living video for many years, and this is one of my very favourites. Only two things; #1 I'd be a bit concerned about bacteria growth in the concrete toilets, and #2 I'd be reluctant to have guests who drink alcohol, as there are a lot of open (non-existent) railings. Actually, even a small accident could be bad - spill a drink, or just trip - whoah. To keep the look, but make it safe, special glass or plexiglass would work. It could be added one panel at a time, to deal with the expense. Otherwise, I would take that house in a heartbeat! LOVE!

To a European, this is not a small house. I am fairly well to do but my city flat is 36m² (+/- 400 sq ft) and I have a retreat in a village that is 3m wide and 22m deep with a garden that's another 8m deep (10 ft by 73 ft and the garden 10 ft by 26.5 ft). Spread out on three floors, I call it "vertical loft". It's all I need since I travel so much.

The only flaw: the railing. Opt for the use of glass or lightweight panels? It seems to me a little dangerous. The location of the place I know well, thanks to my grandparents who lived nearby. The bathroom is totally off putting as is the lack of railing in the loft and on the stairs. The bathroom reminds me of all the houses I've been to in Italy where the family does not replace the broken toilet seat and are used to sitting on the cold porcelain. This is even worse...you get the luxury of sitting on a square, rough, cold cement on both the toilet and bidet, Yuck. The open space is the loft is downright dangerous, especially seeing as he has children. He could have easily installed tempered glasses or acrylic to the railing which would have provided safety without obscuring the precious views. Not only is it completely ridiculous, he's just asking for trouble.

I love this house, don't get me wrong but it feels.... frigid, cold... not something i would look at and say "ah, home". I think he went a little overboard with "innovative and unusual" like the concrete toilets and the balcony/stairs would scare the hell out of me. Overall it's a really nice house but if i ever had the luck of getting one like this i would definitely make so changes to it.
@TomHofmann

It's an interesting house from a design exploration perspective. The overall design of the house is great. It nicely follows a traditional look from the outside but still takes in the views. I do think though some of the details are a bit questionable. Those metal stairs are a death trap. The toilet as others have pointed out will have hygiene problems. The details in the kitchen feel like they are designed by someone that doesn't cook. The wooden draws under the stairs without tracks will get stuck as the wood expands over time. The shower will flood every time. Chopping wood inside the house is great if you get your wood from a design shop but chopping wood that comes for the real world is usually a messy affair. The only heating seems to be from the fire place... yet there is no fire protection on the floor. This means you can never leave it unattended or get a big enough fire going to heat the house.
