The grass comes from the baskets on the hiking poles, dropping seeds picked up along the way, and is considered an invasive transplant.
@rwilkins1583
Those sites you were looking down on as you were walking from the privy were nice and soft- my kids did a section hike and we met them , live not too far from here and hike all the time/ anyway that fire was intense, my theory is that it burnt up all top layer of mulchy, leafe liter etc . My husband and I hiked here in 1984 - the trail has changed - the foot bridge wasn’t there and we hiked up and over the mountain behind the shelter all the way to 501 , now it goes along the James to Matt’s Creek shelter .
@starbrdtack
The grass along the edges of the trail is the result of loosed soil from hiking pole and wind blown grass seeds.

Natural grass. Hope you have a good night.

Props to those out there now that can handle this heat. I'm ready to get out there this fall for a section hike .

Good hike, great company, glad you're able to get out and leave work / matrix behind
@tommybewick
What's up with the Facebook Appalachian Trail 2024 group being so down on you? I don't get it? You're doing a great service to the hiking community and I completely support you!
@jeffstone28
I think the grass is natural and has something to do with the disturbance made by people's footsteps. Probably the leaves further in suppress grass from sprouting.
@Lovesracing19
Safe travels.

Thanks for a Great video! Stay Safe!!

Natural grasses
@melshea2519
In large quantities, hiker funk is an excellent compost which will make grass grow very well! 😮BACON WRAP

Shale rock.
@carlthompsopn3351
I think that they seed the sides of the trail to keep the erosion down
@suehancock5573
