I don't find this shocking. It was the 80s. Racism was a lot more out in the open then than it is now. Also, I'm sure he's not the only racist person in politics. I wish racism would be completely eradicated, but it's a long time coming...
You talk as though the 1980's was the 1930's or something. I was around in the '80's, and racism was not nearly as "out in the open" as you seem to suggest it was, and there was also no way a costume like Northam's would have been generally accepted or condoned. What he did was racist, period. He was a grown man, not a kid. He should have known better.
I found some pics in my grandpas yearbook of them in blackface 😑 it’s sad that this was normal back then. He’s not alive anymore so I can’t ask him about it.
To some of the fools in comments: It's not just publishing a photo - it's enshrining and validating racist violence not only in professionalism, and in common discourse, but in the medical and political environments, where these same doctors (and politicians) are expected to treat EVERY PATIENT and constituent as if they're actual human beings. This is sooo true!! There would’ve been all sorts of protests and marches for his resignation and it would have blown up tens times more had it been a conservative. Jeannie would’ve traced it back to “maga” and not giving him the second chance that she said she would have given him. The double standard is too real.
Rebecca Brockway CNN when covering this story announced Northam as a REPUBLICAN when they previously had him on their show saying he was a DEM. Doesn’t sound like an innocent mistake there, but fits their narrative. They were all up in Kavanaugh’s HIGH SCHOOL yearbook criticizing every little thing, yet pay no attention to Northam’s MEDICAL SCHOOL yearbook. And why aren’t the same democrats calling for Fairfax to resign after accusers came forward of sexual assault that were quick to call Kavanaugh to step down? Even mainstream media news outlets denied claims of Fairfax accusers coming forward saying there weren’t sufficient information to come out with such story. Yet, they were quick to come out with headlines on Covington boys having not done gathered the full information. So yes, please keep denying that there’s not a double standard out there. And of course Trump calling MS-13 rapists and animals is who they actually are, but sure keep defending them.

It’s also pretty clear that he’s proud of the time he dressed up in black face as Michael Jackson. Unfortunately (and this is just my opinion) I truly don’t believe racism against black people will end before the world ends. I think it is a life sentence for us all. (I’m mixed with black, so I’m black). I truly believe this in my heart and soul. But this doesn’t mean that we won’t rise up as a race. We are the strongest race of people on this earth. We’ve experienced the most brutal and long lasting effects of racism..yet we STILL manage to rise above!! The black man is the most copied man in America, and I pray one day the women won’t fall far behind that.

As a black Virginian, I’d like to see him stay in office and perform acts of racial reconciliation. Show us you’ve changed. Repair the trust the has been broken by the conflicting stories about the photos. Our commonwealth needs HEALING and he can start the process.
There needs to be a statute of Limitations on racist stuff. We black people need to just accept that most if not all white people were racist of complicit in their support of racisms +30 years ago and let it go. Because we are expending too much energy angry and not building a black economy and community. This is the same thing that the gay community did to Kevin Hart except Kevin hart yes did previously address this. I may not agree with his stance but now I understand why Nelson Mandela chose to start the new South Africa with truth and reconciliation … He needed to bring forth confessions of racism and hopefully healing. Yes there is still racism in South Africa but they are not fighting over historic activities. Finally 58% of black people in Virginia (you know the state that actually voted for him) actually want him to stay so let them get a handle on this and stop letting white liberal outrage deal with black community matters because evidently the outrage is coming more from the White community trying to prove how progressive and "So Like In with Today..." they are rather than actually black issues.

I don't get what all the big hupla is about. This country as a world example of democracy and freedom of the press and freedom of expression prides itself in the fact that unlike many less savory governments here you can make fun of anyone. Teachers, the police , even the president. But some people want blacks to be above everyone else and it's some kind of federal crime to make fun of black people. That is extremely peculiar and unfair.
