Virtual Hard Disk (VHD)
A virtual hard disk is essentially the data that would normally be stored on a physical drive stored in a file. When a virtual machine is created, virtual devices are created. For example, virtual devices may be created for the CPU, memory and hard disk. The virtual hard disk is connected to the VHD file and thus any data that is written to the virtual hard disk will be written to the virtual hard disk file. Since a virtual hard disk is being used by the virtual machine, this means that the virtual machine can have additional features added that are not possible when using a physical drive. For example, if you wanted to save the state of the virtual hard disk, this could be stored and restored later on. This is referred to in virtual machines as a checkpoint or a snapshot.
Virtual Hard Disks Explained
When you install an operating system in a virtual machine, the operating system sees virtual hardware. Like physical hardware, the operating system needs device drivers in order to access this virtual hardware. The operating system will communicate with the device driver just like it would to access physical hardware. Once the device driver communicates with the virtual hardware, the virtual solution is able to add additional features. For example, it is able add snapshots and dynamic disks. Dynamic disks is a feature that allows the virtual file to grow in size as data is added to it.
Virtual Hard Disk (VHD)
The virtual hard disk format was first obtained by Microsoft in 2003 when Microsoft purchased the company that developed it. It was used in Microsoft Virtual PC and then was continued to be used in other products like Hyper-V. Virtual hard disks support a number of different formats to store the data in. These includes, fixed, dynamic and differencing.
Fixed
The fixed file format used for virtual hard disks uses a virtual file that is the same size as the physical drive. Since the file is the same size, this offers excellent performance. This is because not much processing is needed in order to determine when the virtual hard disk needs to be accessed. The disadvantage with this is that fixed-size VHD files are slower to create than other virtual hard disk types. This is because in order to create the virtual hard disk file, a file needs to be created that is the same size as the physical hard disk.
Dynamic
Dynamic virtual disks use space only as required. When the dynamic disk is first created, this is a fast process as only the basic data structures are created in the file. As data is added to the dynamic disk, the dynamic disk increases in size. For example, if you store 20 gigabytes of data on a virtual hard disk, the virtual hard disk will be about 20 gigabytes in size. The cost of this is that there is reduced performance of the virtual hard disk. If you add and remove a lot of data, the virtual hard disk becomes fragmented. This reduces the performance of the virtual disk and also increases it size. In order for the virtual hard disk to work as well as it can, the administrator can choose to compact the virtual disk. This rearranges that data on the virtual disk as well as frees up any unused space in the virtual disk and reduces the size of the virtual disk. It is recommended that the virtual hard disk be compacted when the operating system is first installed or if the virtual hard disk is being archived. For example, the virtual hard disk is been saved to removable media like optical media.

Using VHDX can i store my current Windows software installer and Driver's Etc. So that i can reformat my Drive C when it is corrupted by viruses.

You could, as long as you don't format the drive with the VHDX on it. You could also store such things on a CD or USB stick.

Yes, VHDX file format will have 32 times the storage limit of VHD file format.

The VHDX file format does indeed offer a significantly larger storage capacity compared to the older VHD file format. This expanded capacity makes VHDX a more suitable choice for modern storage needs, especially in virtualization environments where large virtual hard disks may be required.

Okay, I have a question... This isn't exactly something I've done before, but my dad says that in order to get my Oracle SQL software, I should probably put it on an external hard drive (I have 1 TB). He then said to make the hard disk a virtual machine so it's all stored on there. I'm not quite sure how this works and it's confusing. I haven't seen my dad in person for a while, and he's not the best at explaining things. Is there a video that demonstrates how to do this? Thanks!

If you have a look at our web site and look at the home lab section, this looks at how to install a router on a virtual machine. To use virtual machines, you need to install the virtual machine software and then create the virtual machine making sure you install it on your hard disk. I think where you dad is going with this is that if you have it in a virtual machine away from other files there will not be any risk to the install operating system or the files that are on that hard disk.

yes itfreetraining is right what your dad meant.. Use a good software like paragon hard disk manager, copy the operating system your running even as its running or copy another os install from a folder or from a mounted vhd that could be another virtual machine vhd drive etc..

This virtual stuff is so confusing to me. (Vlan, virtual disk ,vty, etc) so from what I’m understanding a virtual disk is a file that saves all your stuff like an actual disk. Since it’s a file, u need a physical disk that is big enough save that file. And the reason u would use a virtual disk is because u can share it?? To share a physical disk u have to give the disk physically to someone.. and bc it’s a file, u can do stuff like checkpoints and restore?? That’s my understanding. Hard to understand
@itfreetraining
@itfreetraining Год назад
Yes, a virtual disk is essentially a physical disk contained in a file. There are many advantages. i) Free space can be compressed easily reducing the size of the file. As data is added the file can grow in size. ii) Since it is a file, it is easy to move around and backup. iii) Virtual files support checkpoints, thus you can restore back to a previous time which is often easier than using a restore. Combined with a virtual machine you can physical save a point in time and go back. Just like press save in a computer game and then hitting load and going back to that previous point. The disadvantage with virtual disks is the performance may not be as good as physical disks, but it is still pretty good.

I just wanted to know weather a vhd is limited to the hard drives physical space availiable.
@itfreetraining
@itfreetraining 4 года назад
Yes it is. If you have dynamically virtual hard disk, it will get bigger as data is added. If it is pre-allocated the space will be required when the virtual hard disk is created. Keep in mind that if you use features like check point this will increase the amount of space that is required. Pre-allocated virtual hard disk should perform a little faster than dynamic.

@itfreetraining
@itfreetraining 4 года назад
You can make VHD very large. It all depend on how much hard disk space you have.
@itsmitko7
@itsmitko7 4 года назад
@@itfreetraining i cant do more than 2tb for some reason. also you cant really. when you put files on it it expands the vhd file and so much people are saying OMG I GOT 2TB FOR FREE HERES HOW and wasting our time
@itfreetraining
@itfreetraining 4 года назад
@@itsmitko7 VHD has a size limit of 2TB. VHDX has a size limit of 64TB. So if you want more than 2TB you will need to use VHDX. If you make the it dynamic the file will be very small and will increase in size as you add data to it. If you have a 2TB virtual hard disk and have 2 Terra bytes of data in the virtual hard disk it will take at least 2 Terra bytes in size. The size will also increase if you are using snapshots. You save space if you have a lot of dynamic hard disks that are not full. If you fill the drives up you don't get any space gain. Your not getting something for nothing.

But virtual hard disk is pointless, because using it is same as using the hdd where u save th vhd.
@itfreetraining
@itfreetraining 5 лет назад
A virtual hard disk is essentially a file. Thus you can move it around like a file. This has a lot of advantages. It not that easy to move a hard disk around like you can with a file. Also, physical hard disk don't support things like check points. Of course you lose some performance for using virtual hard disks, however you get some advantages as well.
