Ironically my favorite moment from the game was funny not scary. Once you get far enough in Delores's chapter, you go in the kitchen and the appliances are arguing with each other lol. Was a pretty cool scene with some good voice acting.

I thought Delores was the scariest chapter by far. Just seeing her peek around the corner of a door frame or seeing her stood in a corner banging her head. Really freaky.

my favorite part is when you’re just roaming around the house and right before a demon starts attacking you random stuff happens throughout the house. the randomization in the attacks makes this like a dream horror game come true.

dude thank you for making this... I’m a huge horror game fan this is hands down the most terrifying game I’ve ever played. I think the enemy AI and encounters are some of the best I’ve ever experienced, so many times I thought that random encounter was scripted, the enemies in the first two chapters (that’s all I played as of now) just always kept me on my toes because I could never really gage a pattern with them. The most bone chilling encounter I had was with dolaris in the basement during a paranormal attack... The sound cues started building up and I starting running trying to get upstairs when al the sudden it calmed down... I still tried to break for the upstairs when I saw dolaris just out of the corner of my eye looking at me down an intersecting hallway to my left. I never got attacked actually, but the fucking game just subtly placed her barely in my vision with no sound ques or anything to draw my attention. It wasn’t till a second after that I realized what I had just seen which made it all the more chilling.

I believe the last chapter is actually the most important one so far. In the game you live through the experiences of several previous inhabitants of the house. What links you and all other inhabitants has something to do with project mkultra. The LSD experiments that were being done on American citizens by their own government. Proof for this theory to be valid would be the drawing of an LSD molecule in the lab that starts to fill with smoke. Also the fact that all inhabitants have been on medication. I believe Dwayne and the neighbour to both be part of the project. The neighbour being the person who keeps an eye on the subjects. And later on, the use of cameras, the reason behind the scopophobia of Rakan. I believe Dwayne to play the role of field operative in mkultra. And his descent of madness and the reason of his haunting to be the guilt he feels over his actions. This also falls into the timeframe of project ultra. Dwayne gets to live in the house a bit after the end of the project. Him being compliant to the deaths leads him feel guilt and he tries to drown that by excessive drinking. Eventually his only way out seems to be to kill himself and his family. I believe that you play as a ghost in the game. Hence why you have no reflection and body. (Or could be because its in beta/alpha stages) and that the black gooey monster is a representation of you. It was you who broke into rakans house to calm him down and it is you who tries stop yourself from taking the easy way out with the ending where you shoot yourself six times. (Smash the plastered white wall in the basement and use the gun in the room if you havent played this path yet) i also believe that this is you because you take a employee card in the waterplant facility where with an awefull familiar face (the goo blob guy). As an secret mkultra operative trying to spike the watersource with LSD. Thats about all the little secrets i was able to scout out. I am very exited about an update where rose will come to the house.

Great video and review. Love seeing this game getting the love it deserves. I actually found Dwayne’s chapter terrifying. One example (SPOILER) is the light bulb puzzle in the basement, with the radio sounding possessed in a weird, rhythmic way. Walking into the darkness, knowing what it does to your sanity... I’ve never felt so uneasy playing a video game. Being in the darkness made me feel claustrophobic, filled with dread. And then, directly behind me... that sound... you know what sound I’m referring to those who encountered the monster that stalks you in Dwayne’s chapter. Masterful, absolute dreadful horror. Cheers

Yes, there was an implied but hidden story line that Dwayne was working with MK ultra experiments. There are several clues in the game that point to this. And everyone who lived in the house was a victim. There are some redditors who have done some serious digging into the game to find the breadcrumbs and it’s actually pretty intelligent the way they designed it. You can play the game without ever having to suspect any of that, but once you pick up on a breadcrumb you can’t stop noticing them. A lot of those breadcrumbs are within Dwayne’s chapter, but you wouldn’t notice them unless you were looking. Like the radio hidden inside the wall in the basement VHS puzzle for example. That is a huge clue regarding another chapter. The comic book pages featuring the neighbor Rose are a huge clue as well, but you’d never know unless you had the breadcrumbs. Very cool game!

Generally when it comes to horror - be it a movie, a book, whatever - the payoff tends to be the hardest part to nail. You need to present the viewer with some form of resolution, usually in the form of a revelation, but that inherently presents a precarious balance that you absolutely have to nail. Explain too little and the viewer feels like they're just treading water, but explain too much and you risk trivializing everything that came before. Ironically enough most Japanese horror fiction - in many ways the basis of inspiration for P.T. and consequentially Visage - tends to just sidestep the issue by never granting the viewer any kind of reprieve at all and leaving everything to the imagination. That approach requires a LOT of confidence in your artistic vision and, more importantly, your audience. Understandably, many struggle with this. So Visage stumbles as it approaches the ending, I agree, but as a horror afficionado, I can't claim I expected any different. Sometimes the ending does not matter, but rather the experience of getting there. Not that that makes for an acceptable metric for the purposes of a review, of course - what I'm saying is just that I like the game, I guess. Anyway, enough time wasted babbling - great review man, thank you for the video!

While I agree that Dwaynes chapter went a little overboard drilling the drugs and alcohol point home, there is actually more to his story. It starts with the memory where you sign the contract repeating the words “you don’t give a fuck”. This implies that Dwayne was working with some shady people, but on what? The answer there lies in the lab memory. If you look at the charts and graphs on the walls there are two notable things. First off Dwayne’s name is listed with other scientists. The second is a graph showing the chemical structure of LSD. Those two things accompanied by the gas slowly suffocating Dwayne in this section suggests that he was working on some kind of hallucinogenic chemical... that leads into the factory memory... First off, the factory is a water treatment facility. It is here that we get some exposition on the ink monster that has been following you. You open his locker and find that his name was Lewis Taylor, and he was suspicious of Dwaynes presence at the facility, and rightly so for reasons i will get to momentarily. In regards to lewis however I think that Dwayne killed him when he became suspicious, though i have no solid evidence. This section ends with Dwayne picking an apple, it rots in his hands before he drops it into a well with pipes leading in all directions. Immediately after, hundreds of bodies float to the surface all around him.... whatever chemical Dwayne had helped create, he apparently was responsible for unleashing it into the water supply, resulting in widespread death.... Plagued by guilt, Dwayne looked for solace at the bottom of a bottle.... I am unclear as to why, but it would seem that for whatever reason, the visage house was a testing ground of sorts for the drugs/poison that Dwayne helped create (hence the surveillance equipment found by Rakan). My guess is that Dwaynes employers moved him into the house without him knowing that the previous residents (Lucy, Dolores, and Rakan), had been the guinea pigs for his work, thus making him another test subject, or maybe just a loose end that needed to be dealt with. Just like the rest, his mental state deteriorated. He drank heavily and drugged himself to ease his guilty conscience, until he snapped and murdered his whole family. Cue the start of the game.... Obviously this game is very ambiguous in its story, but i like to think i have provided solid evidence for my theory.

So, Dwayne got in from the ground level into this drug company. Says on a sheet he was hired in 1951 to the company. Lucy lived in that house 1961. The company was already around for 10 years and Dwayne was one of the starting employees. My theory is Dwayne was watching Lucy the whole time. Dwayne is the doll faced monster, but just the way Lucy imagined him to look. He was telling her what to do over the radio, watching her from the bushes (while doing the Lucy segment youll literally find a room of just bushes with a teddy bear and a chair and a bunch of toys) testing the mind control limits of the drug he was putting in the water supply. He was talking through the baby monitors to Dolores and watching her through the windows. He was setting up cameras to spy on Rakan and monitoring him undercover in the hospital. All while feeding drugs to the water supply. When Lewis found out, he drowned him. You can tell when he catches you and kills you, you make gurgling noises as if youre spitting up water. And the ghosts kill you how they died. Lucy rips your jaw out, Dolores stabs you. Lewis drowns you. Dwayne was spying on the house the entire time. Thats how he knows where all the hidden rooms and stuff and tunnels are. He put them there in real life. He killed his family and himself in a secret basement behind a wall. And now, in purgatory since hes dead, he has to relive all that hes done to people while being haunted by them in the house HE haunted them in. Just my thoughts :)
@Spaceman_Sp1ff
@Spaceman_Sp1ff 2 года назад
@@roobi8529 very good theory, especially the part about the room with the bushes,, never did quite understand the symbolism there. The thing i cant help but wonder though is why Dwayne would have moved his family into that house if he had known its purpose, which is why i think he might not have been monitoring the victims himself. Perhaps he only had an audio feed? Also I should point out that Rakan and Dolores do not kill Dwayne in the same way they died. Dolores hung herself and Rakan’s actual death is a big question mark because the last we saw him he was locked away in a room by a shadowy figure (presumably Dwayne). Also your thoughts on the demon are sound i think. It is safe to assume that the demon only existed in Lucy’s mind since the paranormal stuff does not seem to happen in the world of the living, that only starts after Dwayne kills himself and enters limbo. It makes perfect sense for it to represent Dwayne or someone working with him feeding into Lucy’s shattered mind to test the limits of the drugs... Last thing I would like to point out is that Visage’s time frame and location lines up with project MKULTRA, which would mean he was working with the CIA. MKULTRA started in 1953 and was brought to public attention in 1975, which aligns perfectly with Visage.
@roobi8529
@roobi8529 2 года назад
@@Spaceman_Sp1ff Oh good call about the deaths! You're right, maybe I may be off about the deaths. Id assume he moved into the same house perhaps out of familiarity? Maybe cause he knew it was vacant haha or perhaps due to it's past that nobody else was going to buy it. Whatever the reason, I think he certainly knew his way around the house. He did what he did in the beginning of the game in a hidden cellar under the basement behind a wall. He was definitely aware. And I dont think he only had audio feed. I think the eyes the game constantly shows you is important and not just some hallucination paranoia thing. I think it's the purgatory he's in going "How do YOU like being watched?" And the many Polaroids all over with the camera. I think it's the game literally playing out Dwayne's actions but in a hellish manor to teach him his wrongdoings. Just a thought :) And yeah, with the MK Ultra stuff all lining up, it's hard to tell if the story of Dwayne is based on MK Ultra or if the story is supposed to interpret that it IS in fact the actual project MK Ultra. Such a cool story though!

Dolores killed me more than anyone. Which is why I found the chapter the most horrifying, I guess. It was the first chapter I completed though. When I went through Lucy’s it was also just as scary but I had more game knowledge. Dolores was the hardest chapter by far. I completed a lot of Dwaynes chapter between missions so it never felt tedious or that difficult because I felt much safer and had a solid understanding of what the game was showing me with the VHS tapes for some reason. I picked up almost all the tapes when I did Lucy’s chapter (maybe lucky) so it wasn’t tedious to me. That being said, Dwayne’s story hit home really hard. Being a recovering alcoholic/drug addict I felt his story very deep. Minus the murder. I love how this game delves deep into the problems of psychosis and other debilitating mental issues.

Lucy and Dolores are very close among them for quality, while for how bad Dwayne can be it always beats Rakan, that's just a way to thank a munific sponsor in the Kickstarter campaign. Now, Dwayne is a core point, maybe the reason it's worse than Lucy is the adage 'saving the best for the first levels' that's held dear in AAA video game development, or they were just tired at that point and wanted to get rid of this work. To validate this, rumors have nervous exhaustion among the members during the making of, and aside the porting for the next gen they're apparently not making anything else. Now, long ramble incoming. The fact is little known, but Dwayne's Masked Man has been tracked down to be a really documented demon called Malphas, a big fish in Hell's army with a fascination for houses. Lucy's chapter homages Poltergeist, because a little girl started communicating with entities found in TV's static, and she starts disconnecting like Dolores before her, even without the pills. In Mk-Ultra disconnection was encouraged, to fragment the personality and create alter egos to be recalled on command once the process is complete. Since this happens with traumas, every means was allowed, not least rituals, to suggestionate the victims in the early phases, and to latch entities to their psych fragments in more advanced stages. Except Dolores, every victim had personal vis-a-vis contacts with their own estraneous controlling entity. The house now. Even ipotizing Dwayne was an agent under direct orders of the Government(he choose to numb itself like Lucy and Dolores, so I exclude this), it's an uselessly huge place, with two levels underground each one big as the ground floor, not counting portals and shapeshifting. I have watched two games before this that left me the impression the house in wich their story happened was better leveled to the ground than standing. I don't remember anything about them, not even their titles, just that in one of them every member of the family dies somehow in the house, including the playable character thanks to a twist personaly related and a guy named Lewis that ended in his little imaginary world in wich everything was named after him. Then stumbled upon Jacob Geller's video about haunted houses, in wich the house itself can be an entity antagonizing its inhabitants, of wich you don't know its past or purpose. And I said before that Dwayne's demon friend is linked to houses in general, maybe this is a huge trap to lure souls in, like Silent Hill, or it took pleasure after the first disgrace(Dolores murdering husband and son) and was addicyed to inhabitants destroying their lives with their own hands(after having been built by Malphas of course). All of this because you said that the house seems responsible of, or just somewhat tied to, all this bloodshed, so one last couple of things. Jung dreamed once about being in a foreign house that he recognized immediately as a personal space of his. The basement was tied to unconscious, subconscious and everything else mental you can't realize normally. In the movie Siddhartha with Keanu Reeves, Siddhartha pulled a copy of himself out of a puddle. Said copy presented (it/him)self as the 'house', but Siddhartha said clearly that He/It, the Architect, would have never managed to build the home. (the copy of)Keanu Reeves then mutes into Sandokan and disappears. I know of two depictions of Evil in Hinduism, one is Ravana the enemy of Rama in the Ramayana, the other is called Mara and the nema means exactly 'the Foe, the Enemy, the Opponent', meanings held for the Devil through the languages. Don't think it's officially called this way but that scene in Siddhartha was about him facing temptations. So I am sure that Sandokan was the Devil of the situation. And that's all.

So far I haven’t found Visage to be scarier than P.T. Going through the house with random lights going off and random noises isn’t very scary to me personally. It does get more intense as you continue through the game but P.T. was freakier for me. Visage’s production value is also amateurish IMO.

Man I was getting really ticked off that people were pronouncing visage wrong. I looked it up, turned out I was pronouncing it wrong LOL. I was pronouncing it the way it would be pronounced in French, because I thought it was a French word not English 😂 I have never heard someone use this word in English before. The narrator in this movie pronounced it correctly according to Google. The French pronunciation sounds cooler tho 😂

I really liked the game, though for some strange reason, I did not find it too scary. Personally, I found Amnesia: Rebirth scarier. Something about the isolated alien landcapes and the story spooked me more. Visage had a great atmosphere though. But some of the puzzles were attrocious.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bjDmGGtglEY.html PT stands for “playable teaser”. It was for a new silent hill game but it was unfortunately canceled. Visage is heavily inspired by PT, if you watch the video you will see the similarities instantly. Also Since the game was canceled PT is no longer available so I recommend just watching the no commentary playthrough I linked if you want to experience it.

Personally I wanted to love it but I wound up just... disliking it. My main issues were 1. I HATE the controls with a passion. Opening and closing doors and drawers was a horrible experience. 2. I disliked the inventory. The ways keys/locks worked was dumb. If I have the key and I click on a locked door with that key it should just unlock that door. 3. I didn't like the way lighting worked in the game. There was such a high contrast between light/dark that it just looked really unnatural. 4. Movement felt overly sluggish. 5. This is entirely my fault but I'm not the best with directions, so I hated the chase sequences. Especially since one way to avoid getting caught was going into a room and closing a door (see point #1). In the end I would say the atmosphere was insanely good in this game. It was creepy AF. Bravo for that. But the game play was severely lacking for me. The actual "game" aspect wasn't fun for me. Puzzles were meh. Movement was bad. If you can get past the poor (IMO) gameplay, I think horror game fans would enjoy it though. I might try to power through again sometime, but with a back log of other games to play that I'm having more fun with it's hard to justify.

Really disagree with your characterisation of the VHS Tapes. They all provide a big backstory on Dwayne and everyone else in the game including the other chapters. The storytelling here can be very subtle and the hints are small but once you know the backstory things which happened in earlier chapters will start form an overarching narrative. SPOILERS and TW TL:DR If you are invested in the story of Visage you want to complete the Tapes and also probably read the fan and community theories that are out there. Looking around the house will tell you stuff for sure but the chapters go into far greater depth. The scare element might not be there (Prison was certainly scary and infuriating for me doing it with no replacing lightbulbs and Indifference was a trippy experience with maybe some horror expressed at the dark themes on show here but nothing very frightening or creepy.) The Affliction Tape where you go into the industrial factory setting and then throw the apple into the well and the bodies, seemingly of indiscriminate people who Dwayne does not know (or will ever know) by the lack of eyes and skin colour, rise out of the water indicates Dwayne probably has had something to do with their demise. They could also be dead which would explain them being in the Indifference Tape, which is confirmed as Dwaynes Domain by the guy in the Plague Doctor mask. The fact that many Plague Doctors were not medically trained and were likely quacks doctors who promise a cure but never deliver one is a really intriguing way to present this character. This part also introduces us to another character via an ID card called Lewis Taylor who the Visage Community thinks is the black inky guy (or Tar Guy). He ends up in the well during Affliction and tries to pull Dwayne in hinting that he either was killed by Dwayne when he tried to stop him poisoning peoples water or that he was poisoned by it and he was too late to stop Dwayne from doing it even more. The Pride Tape also does this too and both seem to suggest Dwayne either worked at a Water Treatment facility and that the company operating it was spreading poison in the water or that he worked for a company doing something in a healthcare setting or that produced chemicals (which he could have used to do said poisoning). Rakans chapter has a hint that this could have been something of a government/organisational conspiracy and knows Dwayne and says that he ruined his life. But the VHS tapes definitely go into heavy game lore which can be a tad obscure at times and things don't fit together well. Blink and you WILL miss it. The sequences of Dwayne Drinking seem to follow a linear story with him going to the supermarket and buying a LOT of beers and then vomiting (probably because he drunk too much) in Negligence. Then this drunkeness is explained by the Addiction Tape where we seem to meet Dwaynes inner "guiding" voice which seems to encourage him to drink to dull his emotions and probably guilt (this feeling is hinted at in the Indifference Tape with the floating notes with feelings on them with the strange frames you must find). The reason for this guilt is further explained by the Pride and Affliction Tapes. Greed is perhaps when Dwayne accepts he doesn't care anymore and signs a contract saying You Don't Give a Fuck. This is followed by him walking into the room of faceless (dead) people and a white bird (most likely a dove) indicating hes made peace with the fact he must now drink constantly or that he has now decided he wants to commit suicide. Indifference is where Dwayne undergoes a punishment of sorts and he lambasts himself and we learn that his inner guiding voice probably constantly mentally tortures him from the scenes where his familys voices are distorted and they shout at him and cast him as a lowlife, however this is self-punishment it seems. Prison is strange as we face off against the character we think is Lewis Taylor but theres not much to it. Perhaps Dwayne was put in Prison for his actions by Taylor/the government and had to escape or he was fearful of going to prison because he killed Lewis Taylor or perhaps this is just for gameplay reasons. It is not known. These subreddit posts explain and go into a lot more detail on very subtle things, though references to pop culture can sometimes get mixed up with stuff in the story. www.reddit.com/r/VisageGame/comments/knaa34/visages_disturbing_story_explained/ www.reddit.com/r/VisageGame/comments/o8o17d/theory_who_is_lewis_taylor_and_his_connection_to/
