That album VM Bhatt did with Ry Cooder is one of the finest performances recorded beautifully. This live performance is different from the album - more energetic and almost frenetic in pacing - fantastic stuff!
It takes rare skill to combine virtuosity and feeling in equal measure to produce such powerful music. Few have it in the right balance in my opinion . Joe zawinul, Peter green, Joni Mitchell, Jaco pastorius and Carlos Santana spring to mind. And now you guys!!! Wonderful to hear such a splendid live version of this from one of my favourite albums. Bravo!!
Please don't compare those musicians to Joe Zawinul, Jaco Pastorius, Joni Mitchell and Carlos Santana, even if they seem good, they are thousand millions miles away!
First time I saw his performance in Jalandhar,Punjab at Harvalab Mela, I became a Fan of Bhatt Saab. His instrument play 3 different instrument in 1 instrument, it was really a new thing that time. This music infusion is great.Too good.
Thank you Poobalan: This is what happens when two of the world's great meet at the meeting of two great worlds...a mind blowing fusion guided by the third in the person of Ram Kumar
Finally, I can die a happy man! Too freakin' kewl! Can you imagine what the cross roads in India would look like, and who would be there waiting on every musician to put a slide to an instrument while wishing for a little more ability and a lot more fame?
Brilliant!!! While I have been listening to Mohan Bhatt for several years now, I had never heard of Jeff Lang before, but he is in good company and the deeper baritone sound of his lapsteel compliments Mohan Bhatt's perfectly. Does anyone know Jeff's tuning?
funny how vishwa and ram are sitting on a podium, and jeff on a chair, but their heads are at the same height. note that the podium and the chair are both about 45cm high.
It's because we set up the risers for the three of us to be at the same height to show mutual respect. Although I think i like Martin G's explanation better. :-D
I don't like it rushed. Seems to me it misses the point this way, loses sense of realism & spirituality. Raising consciousness isn't an express elevator ride, too California. It's more like a breeze w/ebb & tide growing. Such are my thoughts. The original album is perfection.
This certainly is at a faster tempo than the original recording, though in my defence I just fell in with the tempo set by the tabla player (who can hear establishes the tempo after the alap intro). I figured that the Indian musicians can play it at whatever tempo they like, I’m not going to quibble. Bhatt told me it is his piece of music (he suggested we play it alongside another at this gig), so however he wants to play it is fine with me. Not sure how “Californian” that makes it, seeing as the guy missing from the original setting (the great Ry Cooder) has an Australian in his place - “too AC/DC” perhaps? 😂 In seriousness, I love the original recording deeply, and out of respect for it I wouldn’t want to try and replicate it anyway. It’s already been done.
@@JeffreyLangsLoudGuitar Thanks, I understand, playing pieces differently is fun & some can go high top w/out coaxing. But seriously, Ry makes all the difference for true love ;) Still, you're awesome at any speed you like. I look forward to hearing more...
