Fort Fisher Historic Battle Site sits at the very of New Hanover and it is where one of the last battles fought during the Civil War. The Civil War lasted from April 1861 to 1865 and Wilmington, NC was a major port during that time for the confederacy. Fort Fisher was built during the war to protect Wilmington.
On December 24, 1864 the first battle was found here. The second battle was fought in January 1865 where the confederate fort was taken over. Shortly after, Wilmington fell to the Union - by April of 1865 the Civil War was over.
The Earthen Works that were created as the Fort, was the largest in the world when it was completed. Today, only 10% remain. A large portion was taken over by the ocean as the shoreline changed.
The land is rich with our History as a nation and for Wilmington, NC.
