Just returned from a week in Rome. Your vids proved invaluable. Many thanks. All your points were spot on. We wouldn't have had such a nice trip without your vids. We noticed that the better we dressed the less hassle we received from street venders. Possibly unsure if we were tourists or locals. just wanted to say thanks! Next trip...Israel.

just a little tip from a Roman follower: there's a local train from Fiumicino Airport to Tuscolana station (which is located in the south-eastern part of Rome, just 2 metro stops from San Giovanni). That's a lot cheaper than the 13 euros Leonardo Express (it costs 8 euros per person per trip) and the journey takes just a few more minutes.

Excellent advice! I lived in Rome for 27 years. Each time I go back to Rome on holiday, I take the train to Tuscolana and then take the underground at Ponte Lungo.

The best 3 tips we got from our cruise operators: 1. The drinking water fountains - fill your bottles from these street fountains - no need to keep paying for bottled water. 2. Tickets for the Colosseum are also valid for the Forum and the Palatine Hill and visa versa - the queues for either of these places tend to be much shorter than at the Colosseum so buy your tickets at either place and walk straight past the queues at the Colosseum. 3. If you are travelling with children under 14 - entry to the Forum etc is half price providing you can prove their age - take their passport and ask for the cheaper tickets - don't ask, don't get! These 3 tips saved us many Euros and a stack of time as we didn't have to queue at all for the Colosseum - really important if you have limited time in this city.

More likely to get ripped off by the local taxi then pick pockets. They will charge you “extra” for credit cards or not run the meter at all and make up the amount they want to charge you. Beware, 3 out of 5 taxis did this to us. Such a beautiful city ruined by dirty taxi drivers, hurts the honest hard working locals.

I have been ripped off by taxis in many countries. Try to get them to agree to a price up front before you get in or use public transit. Many cities have additional licensing fees for Uber so it can be quite expensive.

The pickpockets are not Italians. They are gypsies from Romania and other Eastern European Block countries (i.e. Albania mostly). You will see gangs of young girls on the Metro, beware!. Never take your passport with you, leave it in a hotel safe. Make a photocopy and carry that on you. I grew up in Rome, and every time I go back, it's worse and worse. Pickpockets, street vendors, etc. It isn't the city it used to be in the 80s and 90s. Luckily Salvini is doing something about the scum.

We were there 1st week of Sep. 18 and we absolutely loved it, everyone speaks English and people were friendly. I avoided public transportation all together and only moved around in Uber. For 10-12 euro it's not worth it to risk being pick pocketed that can ruin your vacation. ✌😉

I love Rome! And would love to go back. The history, the food, the fashion! ❤️ but... if I had to choose my favorite Italian city, it would have to be Florence. ❤️❤️ something about that city that just calls me. All of Italy is amazing and you can’t go wrong with any place to visit. The people are amazing and I just love the history. Pompeii was another amazing visit that I feel I need to do again cause after walking around for 8 hours there, I still didn’t see it all.

I LOVED Rome and Vatican City. I can't wait to go back. I did a pilgrimage tour but next I want to do a Foodie tour. The pilgrimage tour included hotel food that catered to the Americani and not representative of authentic Italian food. Florence and Assisi had the greatest examples of Italian hotel food. Thanks, Mark for all your great travel tips and advice.

Don't even try any restaurants just in front of those Roman tourists site except Castel Sant'Angelo, they overcharged and possibly not cooked by Italian, and the quality is absolutely shit. Try smaller restaurants away from those place or even smaller alleys, they are much much better. Italian pasta, pizza, steaks cannot be shitty, except in those place.

Just adding a point about pick pocketing. I was "crowd crushed" whilst getting on a bus. And then I realised my back pack was wide open. I'm fanatical about making sure it's closed properly so I believe it was definitely a pick pocketing attempt.

For visiting Vatican Musems, Sistine Chapel and ast Peter's Basilica, do you think I should join a dedicated tour wuth the tour leader? Is it worth it since it's a bit expensive, and if I buy a skip the line entrance ticket, I will be provided by audio earphone explaining about the history n stufffs... And also to the Colosseum, since my husband love history and we don't want just to take a picture outside the landmark but we also want to know the history behind it. Thanks

Thanks Mark. I visited Roma for the first time last December, a great time to be there. The Vatican was still crowded but easier to get in. I liked Rome a lot, but it didn't dislodge my favorite European cities: Paris, Prague, Tbilisi, Lyon and now Palermo.(I loved Palermo!) Rome seemed so dedicated to tourism that I couldn't crack it, the way I long ago did for Paris. Yes I saw the big sites. (Trevi Fountain should be renamed Selfie Fountain these days. But the Pantheon was incredible.) My favorite aspect of Rome was hunting down Bernini statues in out of the way churches. That brought things to life for me in much less touristic environments. And oh my the pizza I found while doing that! Walking! Yes. So much that I was glad to take an excruciatingly slow bus back to the Vatican area where my inexpensive hotel was located. The slow bus ride gave me a much needed break.I wish I had seen this then! Obviously this is the beginning of a new series. More please!

I loved Rome. As far as walking, be prepared to go up and down tons of hills. The city is very hilly. All of the food I had there was very good and very cheap. A starter, main course, dessert, liter of house wine and bottle of sparkling water was cheaper than a main course and beer at Applebee's. I think I had carbonara 5 times. Lastly with pickpockets, watch out for organized groups. I saw a group of young pickpockets near termini. One of them had a mini pig. If you stopped to look at it, the others would circle behind you and try to get into your bag. They were professionals. Overall, Rome is my favorite city in Europe. Great video. All the info in here is accurate.

I went on a bus tour in Italy in 2014. Everything was taken care of with the tour company which helped a lot. To avoid pickpockets I had a fanny pack type belt which I wore under my top and kept hidden under my clothes. All I had in it was my credit/debit cards, a little bit of cash and my passport. I had a camera as well which I kept it on a strap across my body and held it in front of me or hid under my jacket. The forum is a definite MUST- SEE. Unfortunately, the Trevi Fountain was under construction and very crowded when I was there and so that was disappointing.

Please Be very very careful! Legit scamers are in Rome and they pay Police under the table to look the other way. Me and my group including others who didn't travel with us to Rome were robbed and pick pocketed by Tour guides, taxi drivers, and even security guards in Rome!!! We saw the whole thing and got photos. We reported it to 3 police stations and they all told us to get lost. I also noticed a extremely long line in every police stations, sad. Avoiding Street scamers and thieves is the easy part, but avoiding Officials who are criminals is nearly impossible and Rome knows it! I found a news article about officials who happened to be scamers who prey on tourist. I'm a avid traveler and I've never experienced anything like Rome, and I've been to South America and Africa several times. Rome has graffiti Everywhere and the people there are not too kind niether. We're visiting Rome for the first time next month. Would anyone have any recommendations of toddler-friendly cafés, pizzerias? If it's possible to have a meal in any of them before 8pm then that's a bonus! Thanks in advance.

I'm so confused by all the different websites to buy tickets to the Colosseum and Vatican. Which websites are reputable and worthwhile? Which websites are the "official" ones?

I’ll be there in a few weeks so exciting! Great video thanks for posting. How does public transportation work ? What’s better bus or subway 🚊? Where to buy tickets for bus ??

Bus is probably more helpful as there aren't too many subway lines

Is it posable to use Rome as a hub? and rent vespas and go see ostia, hurkalainum, Pompeii, and even find and arrange local privet tours so you can get one on one time with a guide ? My hopes would be to find someone who is knowable and dose not rely on tourism to live . And would offering to pay 100 euros a day for a guide would that be fair ?

Not all pizzarias serve pizza at lunchtime? That blew my mind. Why not? Are they planning on reflooring the Coliseum arena one day?

Hotels don’t have to be expensive in Rome. A friend of mine stayed in a decent hotel near the centre of the city for only €38 a night! I’m visiting in September

As you say, pickpockets all over and they work in teams of little kids frequently. Watch your back pack also.

Went with the family in September! Loved Italy....missing it and cant wait to go back someday. Atleast I can relive through these videos lol... Coliseum tour was awesome. Vatican also was spectacular. We didn't get to see much else in Rome ( we went north to Orvieto, Florence and Venice) but we have plenty of reasons to return... ciao!

Just like almost any European city, Rome developed millennia if not just centuries ago when people could only think of walking and riding quadrupeds for transportation; therefore, many buildings are crowded up together on each side of narrow streets throughout the city. The idea of a motor vehicle had no imminence in days when Rome had just become a city or had finished its (meaning Rome’s) development. However, the majority of American cities grew at a time sooooo close to when cars were thought of!

I really would emphasize the pickpockets. It is a problem and always be on high alert. Also watch when going to your hotel with your luggage. If you have an amount of luggage that is challenging for you to handle and a person offers to help you it is most likely a scam. Be weary when trusting people. Also make sure you validate your ticket for the train they do check and will fine you. Other than that Rome is a great city and don't be discouraged about visiting over this just be aware of it and you will be fine.

Thank you for your channel. We're heading to Rome for Christmas. Our big splurge will more than likely be our Christmas meal. Question(s) on restaurants (1) How soon do I make reservations for Christmas dinner (do you have any restaurant recommendations? We're a family of 4 -- 2 boys, 14 & 10-- not ridiculously picky and very comfortable with overseas travel) (2) Can we share plates? I've been to Italy before with the military, but that was YEARS ago & in Puglia (and before kids LOL )

Great video, very informative. I really hope to visit there one day, maybe in 2-3 years or so. Just curious about something, when it's said watch out for your pockets with your wallet, are you talking about your back pocket? I always keep my wallet in my side pocket, so presumably it's safer from pickpockets there? Though I understand one must be vigilant at all times. I'd probably walk around with a backpack, which I guess even that is a risk. I suppose it's all common sense, but it's quite shocking to hear of a thief making off with someone's bag at a busy table.

I recommend using AirBnB for a cheaper option to the hotels. My cousin had a great experience with one of the super hosts there. She stayed for 10 days and she can't say enough good things. Of course, there are plenty of reviews on AirBnB so you can read for yourself. This was a great video Wolter, thank you! I will be visiting for the first time in October 2019 and appreciate your insights!

OMG Mark, you are very lucky with your timing, Trevi Fountain was dry as a bone under maintenance between 24-27 September, which was the entire time I was in Rome. No words could have described my disappointment!
