MAN .. that is some SEXY equipment. I had no idea the 24 track was the genesis of finnicky noise reduction. Fascinating. Thanks a Million for posting this!

Funny that it's actually called threading. First time I did it with the home recording reel to reel I once had, I was thinking that this is like threading a sewing machine, so I started calling it threading myself. But now I learned that it's actually what it's called. Makes sense.

I ALWAYS HATED THE SOUND OF DBX NOISE REDUCTION...COLORS THE SOUNDS TOO MUCH, FUCKS WITH ENGINEERING, PLAYBACK, AND MIXING WAY TOO MUCH FUCKS WITH ENGINEERING MIXING AND MASTERING...DOLBY WAS BETTER, I STILL HATE THE SOUNDS OF THAT SHIT IT'S FIDDLEY UNPREDICTABLE AND UNDEPENDABLE NATURE...GOOD IN CONCEPT,.SHIT IN PRACTICE

I have been using Acustia Audio Tape on Mix and Masterbus Apex, MCI 24 Track Tape and Studer 820 Reel to Reel And Nebula ATR (ATR 1200 and Apex Tape Collection, Nebula Mojo and Colors Pres Colors and Saturation) and Im loving using REAL analog sampled tape plugins for my Mixing and Mastering....it makes a really huge Difference gives a very nice warmth and glue....a must on Mix and Master Bus

Calibration is very quick and easy. My Tascam MS-16 takes 20 minutes tops. Rarely do I change tape type as I haven't to date owning it. Ampex 456 only at this point. I will add that learning the skill of proper maintenance is a good thing. It imparts a level of confidence in the equipment's performance, allows a professional session to occur for the client and creates a mindset in the engineer of professionalism that pays it forward to everything they do. People that take care of their equipment, take care of their clients. This is true in any business. My two cents.

Same, always took like 15-20min to calibrate Maybe he’s taking into account changing the tape formula or maybe even head alignment? But 45min sounds high I’ve had 2 MS-16s and I loved calibrating them and keeping them running properly, super easy and nothing more gratifying than seeing 0VU in Sync, Repro, Record mode Miss those machines.. and the MRL tape guy lol

hahaha well it's mostly for when you put a new type of reel on...otherwise you're just spot checking everything. No need to calibrate Portastudios lol! (i don't actually think you can)

11:09 We had this problem quite often. Patchbay contact problems do happen, especially with patch cables that use different metals, such as nickle and bronze. This is due to 'galvanic corrosion.' Changing out the patch cables with same metal type plugs as jack field usually mitigates this problem.

Great video! I just found your channel and am really digging the way you promote tape.. not better, not worse.. just different, it’s art so there is no right answer And you’re right, this is a great time bc we have access to both To me, the selling points with tape isn’t even sonically(although it does glue nicely), it’s about how immersive and personal the process is. I work better with limitations so I get more done because I have to commit Keep up the great work!

Great Stuff & I LOVE your philosophy of Analog vs Digital, and that it is all art - you are so correct that too often, folks get caught up on which is better than the other, when what REALLY matters, is the music, the song. A great song, no matter how it was recorded is a great song / A crappy song, no matter how it was recorded will always be a crappy song.

I just found a TEAC A-2340R for free from my college, working perfectly, this channel is the best thing I've found yet. Great for even getting a hang of the basics. your tape delay tutorial is next on my list, as soon as i get a mixer. any small mixers you recommend?
@MadeOnTape
@MadeOnTape 3 года назад
nice score!!! There are tons of great cheap modern mixers these days, even a Mackie like this one linked below. If you're looking for a number of features, the TASCAM Model 12 is cool, but it's also a recorder, not just a mixer. I can also recommend the 1970s Yamaha EM-80 or EM-100 or EM-150... they are heavy but sound awesome and have a built in Spring reverb tank that sounds VERY cool. thanks for watching! bit.ly/3lMWU2v

Just a heads up, JH-16 does not mean it’s a 16 track. Just like the JH-24 does not mean it’s a 24 track. These are just models numbers for the era of the machine. The JH-16 =1970’s and the JH-24 = 1980’s. Either machine can be 8, 16, 24 tracks. There’s also different era transports for these machines. Mine is a 24 track 2 inch JH-24 with the JH-114 transport. From 1983. Lots of people think the JH-16 means it’s a 16 track and the JH-24 means it’s a 24 track and that’s just wrong. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Chris, the part of the tape machine where you can cut the tape with a razor (not sure what it's called, the splice guide?), what are the three differently angled cut lines for? Is it for varying "levels" of fade?
@MadeOnTape
@MadeOnTape 3 года назад
splice block, usually. i’m not expert in splicing but i know that they are used for varying scenarios, like leader tape is at the almost 90 degree angle sharper angles were for edits, but i heard that if it’s too sharp you can get a “flash” edit on a stereo track, where the image gets weird for a moment. that’s an art i would have to spend time with someone who knows what they’re doing to learn! great question
@mtchampion1831
@mtchampion1831 3 года назад
Vertical for a hard, instantaneous sound cut, or diagonal for a soft, more oblique cut. Hope that helps.
