Yes, KM is doing a great job of building aluminium yachts. But you would find many other small boatyards building great boats in this region (Friesland). We are also building our boats there.

As far as I know, they are sailing the Northern high lattitudes for the moment. Until Corona is over, it is not a good idea to sail across the globe anyway. Too many regulations.

Unfortunately not, they are not build for that. But if you want to see an aluminium yacht bis electric propulsion, check out our Viator Explorer 42 DS.

Even if the boats look similar, every Bestevaer is a one-off design. You won't find two identical boats. What KM told me at the BOOT exhibition in Dusseldorf (Germany), the typical budget for a Bestevaer 45 is about 700,000 Euros. But same is true for a Garcia Exploration 45, even if the list price is much lower. But until you can set sails for your adventure, you need to pay for a long list of extras. Our Viator Explorer 42 DS will have a list price between 600,000 and 650,000 Euros excl. VAT. But this includes a carbon mast, performance sails, high quality equipment and all the extras you may need like a watermaker or genset. It is just impossible to go much lower, if you don't want to compromise on quality (which I would never recommend with a yacht).

Design costs and custom production costs are accordingly much higher than mass production where scales of economy and production efficiency can be realized. The designer has to design the boat then a production engineer has to figure out how to build it and create work instructions and procedures for each piece. There is a lot of work that happens before a tube is cut or arc is struck. It’s is expensive but an aluminum boat can last a very very long time. Those vessels are works of incredible strength and beauty. I can’t afford one, I bet those that can afford one appreciate that fancy front office!

There is always another option, to take an experienced yacht designer and a yard and build a boat by your own. This is what we did and of course you can save a few 100K, because you don't have to pay for the "fancy front office".

So what boat did you end up building? I've been looking at Van den Stadt designs. Very interesting, salty and plans are reasonably priced.

They are 100% aluminium, also the deck. This is the big difference to boats from Allure or Garcia Exploration. The deck is composite. I consider this a safety risk, if the mast comes down and smashes the deck. Our new boat Viator Explorer 42 DS (which will be featured by this RU-vid channel) is also 100% aluminium.

You don't use epoxy. The hulls are bare aluminium, no coating at all. That is the best for aluminium yachts.

Volt-At-Sea thank you for your comment but I have built several aluminum yacht and an epoxy fair compound is utilized to fair where needed. It is a 2 part system, mixed 1:1, white and red. The result is a pink fairing compound. Sorry to break you bubble, it was utilized and is no big deal, except on one FRB yacht I happened to see under construction. Rather than correct errors, up to 4 inches of epoxy fairing was utilized. We are lucky this builder is out of business.

@@eddieohearn17 I only work with high quality boatyards, and nobody puts epoxy on a aluminium hull - except underwater as a primer for the antifouling. Look at the KM yachts, no painting. Garcia Exploration, no painting. Boreal, no painting. So why epoxy "is needed"? I don't get the idea.

Volt-At-Sea I only built yacht in the 115ft to 200ft range. And every one uses an epoxy skim coat on upper services. This is exactly what I saw and is no big deal. The builder is not attempting to hide anything. In fact I am about to retire and looking to by a go anywhere yacht and aluminum is the way to go. I watched the video and it only re-enforced my desire to contact KM and see when I might be able to start the process. It is not far from a slam on KM. I actually love the look and the care in their production. I saw this in the video. You should also know that an epoxy skim coat on topsides not only fair but often bonds better than paints. This as you know assists in the reduction of any possibilities for corrosion and that is what kills metal yachts.

Volt-At-Sea It appears you took this as a slam on the builder ....HELL NO. I go back over 4 decades of build and I know exactly I what I am looking at. I saw hulls that were beyond perfection, awesome topside and the attention to detail in wiring and insulation ... these are the reasons I am hoping to have them build a yacht for me.

Deck ist often just 4mm aluminium (like at our boat). Not more than 5mm.

They offer a very typical classic design with a pilot house. You can find a modern version if you google for our Viator Explorer 42 DS.
