Visitors At The Off Grid Homestead Help Out For The Day

Saturday morning I found that my homemade pallet porch had survived a rain storm over night with not a drop of water on the porch.
I went down to the creek for some drinking water. I take gallon jugs to get creek water for drinking. I used to get water from my landlady's house but it has been contaminated and is not drinkable anymore.
Some people drink straight out of this creek but I filter it with my Berkey water filter made using an empty pretzel jar and a sun tea jar.
In the early afternoon a guest, Joe and his family came over to help out on the property for the day.
Joe is a carpenter and helped me shore up the new porch a bit and framed the door for my porch entrance. He then made a door using 1x2 boards and scrap lumber. Now all I have to do is hang it on hinges.
The boys hauled wood for me and cleaned up around the place some while Joe's mother made a nice lunch for everyone and generally helped out with the work.
I worked on my barrel stove kit and have it nearly finished now. I need some stove cement so I can get a perfect and tight seal around the metal parts before I can use it for heating my RV.
It was a good day working at the off grid homestead.
I will soon have my RV solar heating porch closed in with plastic and then I will have free heat when the sun shines. I will also soon have my small barrel stove kit finished and be heating my RV with the wood stove.
Thank you Joe and the gang for a great day and good help.

Ahhh, what great people the Joe-Family is! Joe and Tyler and Jacob (did I get that right?) are all such hard workers. And so giving. Such a pure spirit they have. The strength of that family is Nancy. Anytime a mom is present she is the manager, the supervisor, and the caretaker. Feeding them all. God bless you, Nancy!

Thank you BigJoe for lending a hand. You demonstrate part of what off-grid coupled with being "prepared" should be all about. People helping people, using whatever means they have available in a close knit community. Everyone receives help in some form from the time they are in diapers. Often can't pay back directly to those who have helped us. Your visit a good demonstration of Paying It Forward. Troy may not be able to pay you back directly, but he can Pay It Forward to others in various ways.

Thank you. I plan to return for more fun. The three studs in front of the door run from roof to floor. I felt that and the door frame supports I put in tieing the side to side on each end will help keep things from moving. The pitch of the roof from the door back is pretty good. I don't see extreme loads. He plans on keeping it clear of snow. Believe it or not its alot smaller than you think and that makes a big difference in my opinion not saying thats bad because that makes things stronger.

LuvMyTJ here in the Sierra we stack split cut wood on pallets to keep them off the ground. Then cover with a tarp. We have something like 10 cords at a time. A neighbor built a covered area with the fine mesh construction cloth sides and bottom which keeps rodents, snakes out.

Growing up wood pile always close to house. When heating season started, wood kept on back porch to keep it dry. Even today, often store wood on our screened porch for the fireplace during winter, in case can't use furnace. No additional problems with critters because of wood on porch. Because of way situated I have to keep wood further from my shop than I like. Carrying wood that extra 30-40 feet or so get's tiresome quickly when filling woodbox in shop everyday. Even worse in rain or snow.

What nice folks to loan a hand. It kind of restores my faith in mankind. Nice job on the porch. May I suggest installing a few 45 degree supports from the top plate onto the studs. A wet snow load can weigh 1000's of pounds and be dangerous. You might want to double up on a few of those studs too. A tip when cutting a radius with a circular saw. Adjust the blade about 1/8 " longer than the thickness your cutting and for straight cuts about 1/4" longer. Less drag on the saw blade. Safe drink

Having the creek water pumped into your RV would excellent. One idea is a car battery hooked to a solar panel next to the creek. A Shurflo then to pump it up to a small holding tank, a few gallons, about 6 feet off the ground or whatever the pump could do ( a float valve to stop the pump when its full). Then gravity flow into pex all the way to the RV and another pump to pull it at the other end straight into your pipes or another tank. A lot of pex but it would work.

House/trailer jack placed of a piece of plywood so the jack don't sink in damp ground will work if you start to have tire problems. Setting in the same spot for months without moving will eventually permanently distort the shape of the tires. They won't be perfectly round anymore, making them undrivable. If you were able to jack it up & rotate the tires 90 degrees every month or 2, it would help keep their shape better.

My grandfather had one of those barrel stoves in his 2 1/2 stall garage for heat in the winter in northern Minnesota. It was a 55 gallon drum. He would start in first thing in the morning, with in 2-3 hours you could work in your street cloths. he would yell at me because I would wear a tshirt and shorts because it would get that warm in there

Good tip that works! Wax better than soap. Some "soaps" attract moisture which can lead to rust in the future. I keep a small block of paraffin wax (canning wax) in my tool kit when needed for screws. Any traditional candle will work. Don't know about the fairly new soy based, gel candles, & such.

if you put a rope on the handle of the jugs, you could just throw it in the creek and then pull it up. no bending over. have a wonderful rich life in the woods
