Newport Landing Whale Watching offers an exciting adventure for the whole family. This short video is clips of what some visitors from San Diego experienced on our recent whale watching trips. The first two clips are of some playful Humpback whales that were viewed a couple days before off the coast of San Diego. These whales moved a few miles north from San Diego to us while following a school of sardine. On this trips we had a few students that were studying these whales in San Diego and followed them a few miles north to us. More information on these San Diego whales in clip 3’s description.
The second clip is of a Minke Whale and some dolphin that played with the boat, which gave passengers an up-close look at these amazing animals. On this trip, I had the opportunity to speak with some passengers that had spent two days in San Diego at a marine animal theme park. They told me that watching the whales in San Diego was nice but seeing these animals in their natural habitat was much more exciting. I told them that several people see whales at that San Diego theme park then visit us and have the same reaction. This theme park in San Diego has a great research, education and care program but nothing beats watching whales in the open ocean.
The third clip is from a trip where we took a group of students from San Diego whale watching to study the behavior of Humpback whales. As stated before these Humpback Whales were originally viewed off the coast of San Diego. These students started their study of these whales in San Diego and followed them as they moved about an hour north to us. This Humpback was very playful and stayed with the boat for a very long time. I think he was studying these San Diego students as much as they were studying him. Once these whales moved up from San Diego they stayed for several weeks. The students on the other hand spent two days whale watching before heading back home to San Diego.
In the fourth clip through the end of the video, you will see California Gray Whales along with some dolphin. The California Gray Whale makes an annual migration from Alaska down the coast crossing the Mexican border in San Diego heading towards Baja. The California Gray Whale makes this migration to either mate or give birth. Once the calf is ready to make the migration back to Alaska the whales begin their return trip. They cross back over the Mexican border into San Diego on their long journey back.
We hope that you enjoyed this video. On your next visit to San Diego, we would love to have you come see us, and take your own whale watching trip. For San Diego whale watching visitors, Newport Landing provides year round whale watching cruises departing just north of San Diego in beautiful Newport Beach.
