Visual Effects is all about Data manipulation. If we go through the 8 steps of visual effects we’ve covered in our “How Movie VFX are made” Video we can easily see this. In tracking live action footage we are transferring data from the live action shot into a simulated visual environment within the computer.
In modeling we are manipulating mesh data in 3d space in order to create a 3d mathematical representation of an object. With Rigging you are connecting the 3d modeled vertices to corresponding bones and contraints to push and pull the CGI object around. So that eventually the rig data can be manipulated within the animation process.
In Texturing and shading 3d models and assets… you are utilizing image pixel data and placing it onto the 3d model data that you have telling the computer how it should render certain pixels on the 3d object the various texture maps could correspond to where an object should be diffuse…where it should be glossy…and even how it should be displaced in 3d space.
Simulation in VFX entails manipulating data to replicate real-world physics, enabling artists to recreate intricate phenomena such as fluid dynamics and particle systems. This process involves adjusting data parameters to achieve realistic simulations, contributing to the overall authenticity of visual effects in films, games, and media.
In Lighting/Rendering a rendering engine uses the laws of physics to export realistic image data regarding how something is being lit in a 3d environment within the computer.
Finally, with compositing, VFX artists merge various data passes and live-action elements, engaging in intricate data manipulation. They blend multiple layers, adjust lighting and shadows, and fine-tune details to ensure that each component seamlessly integrates with the others. This process requires a keen understanding of data manipulation techniques to achieve a cohesive and realistic final visual composition.
At its essence, VFX entails manipulating data to create captivating visual narratives, and the key lies in understanding when to amplify data intricacy or simplify the process. Determining the threshold at which an effect appears realistic and believable without the need for additional data creation is a critical aspect of VFX craftsmanship. Artists must discern the appropriate moments to enhance data complexity and when to embrace more rudimentary forms. For instance, choosing a 2D rendition over a complex 3D counterpart proves effective in static camera shots without compromising visual impact. This strategic decision-making extends beyond mere visual elements; it is also pivotal in scenarios where the finer nuances of 3D data manipulation are indispensable for achieving the desired realism and visual resonance. Navigating this nuanced terrain demands artists to make judicious choices, ensuring an optimal blend of creativity and efficiency in the dynamic landscape of visual effects.
