This is format is so interesting because you both have two very distinctive styles on the the spectrum of modern guitar. Joe is a bit freer improvisationally where Josh’s is more groove and rhythm based but equally intricate. Neither is superior to the other and really is a matter of taste. What’s cool is that you are examining each other’s approach to the instrument which relatable to all different types of guitar playing. Thank you guys!

I learned about this root/intervall way of thinking from Tom Quayle and Jack Gardiner and i think it matches perfectly with 4th-tuning (again, as TQ promotes). May i ask why you decided to stay in standard?

Jazz and classical guitarist here. I think that one of the best things from going to conservatory for classical guitar was the necessity to memorize every note on the fretboard. Once that is mastered, working through jazz standards by voice leading al the 7th chords of the standard(s) that you’re working on will do wonders for your understanding of the fretboard. I think in chords, this frees your mind in helping improvise over complex chord changes like Giant Steps or Rhythm Changes.

I did a bit of practice like that through learning stuff from the almanac of guitar voice leading by mick Goodrick. Really brainy stuff it was kicking my ass the whole time. Should probably do more of it. Thanks for watching

The best knowledge is in the ear. (Identify where you at just by hearing the color of the note). If you learn to identify all outs, you essential know everything, by ear
