Great review and the optimisation tips will really come in handy when I get the device. Your videos are always so informative. The moment I saw that design I knew I had to get the Win 4, and I'm glad that the previews for it are good. I'm curious what kind of power and performance use there is after the optimisation. The 15W vs. 25W figures are interesting, but if I play with optimisations, they're not that relevant. In theory it would also have been nice to see intermediate TDPs like 18W, but I figure that again, optimised settings performance is what matters.
Would you be able to make a video on replacing the SSD for GPD Win 4 and installing fresh Windows? Pros and Cons of installing GPD's Windows package with baked in firmware vs fresh Windows plus driver installation? Thank you for the informative videos!
Hi I have done the replacement ssd. It was easy no complications, but it wouldn't boot the flash drive for Windows. Trial and error what worked for me is I created a bootable flash drive with rufus then followed the rest from the gpd site and it worked
Have you seen the Win 3, it looks fantastic! However, it is (still) just a prototype, I'm excited to see their retail version that doesn't require a crowdfunding campaign for a more robust and comprehensive warranty and customer support network. Apparently, the Win 4 isn't that.
There is, of course, a way to get back to Win 2 keyboard quality and beyond: Clamshell design; bring it back, GPD. I still hold Win 2 as my favourite handhel ever.
Which handheld should i choose? Ayaneo 2 or GPD Win 4. Have the Steam Deck but i want to sell it. Mostly the Screen on the Deck makes me wanna change. The touch and the colors are very bad.
The benefit of more ram is that it can be used for disk cache, prolonging the lifetime of the SSD and slightly improving the performance (reducing dips)
Reads don't hurt flash. Writes do. Write caching on a battery powered portable device like this would be a recipe for data corruption. Could help with read caching on large game files though. As long as you don't let the battery get low and have to shut down.
@@tin2001 Yeah, no, unless you're going with knock-off brands from China, SSDs don't just go caput. I still have my SSD from... 2015 256gb with the OEM windows install that I keep putting into different machines.
As someone who mostly uses these portable devices on the bus, the smaller size is greatly appreciated! But the price is, unfortunately, too steep for me right now😢. Steam Deck it is until I find a similarly priced device in a smaller size. P.S. Valve please release a Steam Deck Mini!
Valve should do it and make it pocketable. They can keep the same specs to not give original SD owners FOMO, and they’d get to double dip like Nintendo with a different sized model.
Thanks for this review. I love your in depth graphs and settings. It speaks my language because I love to tinker. I already have a Win Max 2 so I know what the 6800u is a capable of. I will be putting my order in.
You can't tell me that Slapping the Sliding Keyboard from a 2002 SideKick on to the body of 2005 PSP is honestly better or more ergonomic than anything developed in the almost 20 years since?? Also, what's with all of the Bots Commenting?
I'm tempted to sell my steamdeck and gaming pc and picking one of these up. I'm getting to the point were I just want a pocket able handheld device for everything
The price for the cheapest model is really great. It's good to see that GPD does not sell their products at a reasonable price now and not too much overpriced. Handheld prices have went up too much
@@watchmejumpstart69 I have the GPD WIN 2, and one of the reasons I opted for the Ayaneo 2 was because people said they have pretty good customer service. I definitely get the quality control concerns here. These videos always tempt me though 😅
@@watchmejumpstart69 it sucks about the GPD stuff. I really want to like them. That being said, it makes me more confident in my switch to Aya. This will be my first product from them and I'm pretty pumped 😁!
First: I am in love with the very convenient lanyard/wrist strap attachment point. I know they're not fashionable, but I don't want to drop my (Very Expensive!!) tech because I'm jostled on the train or whatever. This is the first handheld PC that I really want despite being super happy with my base model Steam Deck. I still maintain that they're not genuinely comparable devices - the price points alone put them in two completely different categories, but this is one I'd want to save up for. Honestly I'd probably get the 32 GB, 1 TB model - RAM looks like it's soldered on and I definitely don't have the skills to mess with that, so getting the cheapest 32 GB model would be the most future proofed option (an absolute necessity since it's a Very Expensive device for me, it's not the kind of money I generally have to spend and certainly won't be able to spend every couple of years to upgrade to a new device). But yeah, man, I am TEMPTED. It's so expensive though, and even more so because I'll have to pay 25% VAT for the non-EU import (the custom's office online calculator claims there's no import duties, at least, but I'd have to confirm that with someone before trusting it tbh)
I wish price point put them in different categories in Australia - the minimum spec Deck costs only 5-15% less than the minimum spec GPD Win 4 here (depending on vendor, the 64GB model goes for between $850 and $1150 (AUD))... for an EMMC device... I assume that just means even our tech companies are scalping us. Luckily, IndieGoGo doesnt have such a price hike. I'd love to have one of the Valve devices, but not at an artificially $400 (AUD) higher price than it's worth.
@@lumeronswift @Lumeron Swift the Deck isn't officially sold in Australia yet - if you're buying it there, you're buying from a reseller/scalper who's inflating the price to take advantage of people who want a Deck and don't want to wait for the official launch. It'll definitely be significantly cheaper to buy it from Valve - the Asia prices are just a smidge higher than the European price, despite going through Komodo as a "middle man", so I'm pretty sure the price will remain more or less the same when it launches in Australia. So yeah, at those inflated prices I'd definitely discourage people from buying a Deck - you're absolutely being ripped off, and there's a lot of competition in or just slightly above that price that will be a better deal. (Also: idk how Valve handles warranty and repair for "unofficially" sold Decks, that could be a real issue) For me, I'd love a GPD Win 4 but it's way out of my budget even before adding VAT. If I had that kind of cash though, I wouldn't spend it on a scalper Deck. Either get something that's actually sold for that much money, or wait. No need to pay that difference to a scalper imo 🤷♀️
I don’t have a portable gaming PC but I want one and I see a lot of different reviews on different type of gaming PCs and I think people are sleeping on this one. This one might be really good
Is it true? Gpd have higher faulty units than other companies? I mean deck too have % of faulty ones.

@@Groboman my GPd win 3 came doa in may 2021 (indiegogo backer), It wouldnt turn on. Opened the device to see what problem and It was the on/off ribbon cable. Talked with them for months , wanted me to send It with no date of returning It to me. I obviously said no, i could just install the ribbon cable they should send me. Then came the excuses for the piece, they did not have It for months. Finally, after sending kendyzhu daily mails, and tweeting my problem on their ads for GPd win pocket (and getting blocked by them on Twitter), they send me on november 2021 the piece. It arrived on January of this year. Installed It and could use my win 3. On top of It all, i receives the wrong wi fi chip (they advertised wifi 6, mine came with the old Intel wifi chip). And now my battery Life is at 25% after a year and a half of arriving in may 21.
@ wow that's pretty bad news indeed. Its understandable, that reviewers getting super polished devices...but other customers seems need hope, that their units, gonna be good.Yeah that's really sucks. Can you get a new battery for your device?

@@Groboman i Will use It until It dies for good. I dont think i Will be buying a new battery. I dont trust GPd anymore and dont want to spend more money in any of their products.
@ really sad when something like this happens, especially with such expensive devices. I mean my vita and 3ds are about 10years old,but still working great, how long those pc-portables gonna work...that's a question too. Hope you won't gonna have any more issues with your device.
Wow, I’m a first time viewer and had to sub after watching it. Great job of describing the GPD without gushing over it. That said, this is easily the most “desirable” handheld I’ve seen this year, if not of all time? The GPD’s design is simply impeccable. Each time I see a new handheld out of China, there are always some weaknesses. Some are too large in places, some overheat and others are a bit underpowered. It’s easy to articulate the shortcomings of other devices. My gripes for the GPD are absolutely minuscule. Sure, I’d love to see Hall effect sticks and a slightly thinner body, but my complaints would amount to less than 1 out of a 100, it looks *that* good. I have a GPD Pocket from years ago and it still works like a charm. The production quality of my Pocket is insanely high. The shell is made of CNC’ed aluminum and the fit of the parts rivals Apple products I own, so I’m reasonably certain that GPD will ship some outstanding handhelds that buyers will be very pleased with. I have no affiliation with GPD, I simply own on of their products and even though it’s a few years old it still impressed those who’ve never seen such a tiny notebook PC. Nice work on a great video! 👍 Videos like this should remind everyone that despite all the political nonsense that’s defined the 2020’s, we still live in amazing times when they can fit a true gaming PC into a handheld only slightly larger than a PS Vita!
Would love to see battery tests for indie titles and less intensive games. This looks like a beast of an emulation station, and it's just absolutely crazy to see this playing cyberpunk..
It is undoubtedly the best thing out there compared to the rest right now. Still expensive though. The one aspect that I would change is to put an 8" screen on it to maximise it's potential. Because this could be used as a general PC, 32Gb may well be of use.
I think they all have their advantages and disadvantages. Aya Has a better screen, full sized hall sticks with first party a software and better rumble. The Win 4 has a smaller screen better speakers a keyboard and a trackpad. The OXP 2 just has a bigger screen. Not really a fan of OXP but some people prefer bigger screens. It all comes down to user preference.
good look with the heat output and power consumptionon on 8" the gpd win 4 is perfect as it is good thermals and all the needed watts going to the cores
Now if only their mapping software for the back extra "triggers" let you *map a HOLD button instead of just 1 button repeating.* OR If they made the triggers show up in literally any remapping program such as reWASD or XPadder...
Not a huge fan of how small the screen is, or how little groove there is in the rear for comfort grips. The steam deck is pretty comfortable compared to any of these other handhelds.
@@Jorr_G440 I have the win 3, onexplayer, and aya neo. The onexplayer is the only one with a griplike feature. The win 3 rubber grip case doesnt improve comfort much. The onexplayer is perfect to play on a table because of how high up the buttons are and the kickstand on the rear. You would likely agree if you owned any of them.
Definitely looking forward to seeing inside of the unit. Curious what's upgradable etc. If ram can be upgraded it may be easy to say yes to their base model.
Its keyboard needs to be redesigned to fit "thumb-typing." For instance, put number keys and function keys in the middle and make bigger letter keys on the two sides.
Can't wait to use this connected to my RTX 3070 eGPU while on the toilet, on the subway and on the bus. Taking mass transit lux style is on another level bro.
Very impressive design. The performance and battery life are still in the early days for handheld PC gaming. I hope they keep updating it with better APUs. AMD just announced new APUs at CES 2023, but did not announce any U parts for their Phoenix APUs. The Phoenix APU Zen 4 CPU, RDNA 3 GPU and XDNA A.I microarchitectures on TSMC 4nm could bring substantial performance efficiency improvements. The future of the GPD WIN4 is really exciting. I think they can make the keys on the keyboard to be sunken to help with muscle memory and accuracy instead of raised (dome) like you mentioned with blackberry or flat as is. They could also split the keyboard and move the keys closer to the side for two hands typing, that way you don’t have to stretch your fingers to reach the middle. Having a landscape screen is just a win for the GPD Win4. God bless early adopters.
Yes it is, however I may also suggest that you simply buy the 64GB Steam Deck for $400 and then put a 1TB 2230 SSD that you can get for around $100 on Al iexp ress. You would get a considerably better value. However, if you intend to also use the GPD Win 4 as a desktop PC and need a small console, then I highly suggest you get the base model for $800. The Ryzen 7 6800U is generally 40% faster than the Steam Deck at 15W TDP, and at 15W it's also going to have a better battery life. Play the games at 720p and do not use Radeon Super Resolution. And the Ryzen 7 6800U is crazy fast because of its 8 much more powerful cores that can handle an eGPU well and which can run all the apps you need in desktop mode.
Worried it would feel cramped in my hands, but the big issue for me are no hall sticks. If they drift, it's too complex for someone like me in Australia to fix. Big no no IMO.
I feel like one of the things people forget about steam deck is that it’s basically providing a pro controller with each handheld.. paddles and all. The ergonomics and thumb sticks on this are not on par at all. Also them mousepads on the steam deck feel almost necessary for pc gaming compatibility for many titles out there
Not to sound mean here, but how do you know? Have you held the win 4? Kimd of a bold claim to say that these ergonomics are not on par when it isn't even out yet. The Steam Decks controls aren't for everyone either. Some people like the sticks being offset like the Switch, and the Dpad in the SteamDeck makes certain games a punishment. Top that off with the Deck being an absolute beast in the size department, and something like the Win 4 suddenly seems more appealing, at least in my opinion.
@Chad Ballard I'm the opposite. I actually had a Steam Deck up until just a few days ago when it sold on eBay. I mostly play handhelds while laying down, and the weight of the Deck going against gravity started becoming an issue for my hands over longer play sessions. Personally, I never had a cramping issue with the offset sticks on the Switch. I just think the Win 4 is cool because it's basically a laptop that fits in pockets and runs powerful games. To each his own.
@@bluemidnight5926 to elaborate on ergonomics a bit. My hands cramp within 20m when playing on my switch with no grip and it's extremelylight to me. So.much so that sometimes my grip would just soften enough where I have to catch myself before it falls. While the steamdeck I can feel enough of a difference that it doesn't cause me to lose my grip and the weight is barely different to me, I have large hands and etc. Also the finger positions as a whole are a lot more comfortable. Even when using a satisfy grip on my switch I still have the gripping issues
ah, ok, so this is one of the only x86 handhelds to NOT have a portrait display? awesome, I was looking for the one you mentioned (this one it sounds like :) )
I had a Win 2 whose keys on the keyboard kept falling off. These keys feel a lot more sturdy than the ones on the two. I had to buy extra keys to replace the ones that fell off.😂
I'm still amazed that no one is mentiionning the fact that there's no capacitive joystick on those device, all sensor is cool but... Capacitive is way better in term of gameplay. I know trackpads aren't popular, but capacitive joystick combine with gyro is such a nice feature. I can't imagine going back now, and there's not a single one of those review that mention it. Feels like you guys don't play that much with those (which i could totally understand) and miss that point. But for me now, more power and form factor is nice to have but won't be enough, i need my gyro to be as easy as it can be (i'm also using the steam deck track pads for old games, playing for example Pharao or old Baldur's gate...). To resume, inputs now are as important if not more important to me that raw power and form factor.
Feeling better about putting down my $800 on this after this review. I was torn between this and the Ayn Loki Max, but went with this because Ayn has shown no working prototypes despite supposedly shipping before the Win 4
this is such a cool concept with so much potential. remove the keyboard and add a 720p 60fps display, and add a 10,000 mah battery like the ayaneo air pro and it would be perfect. id happily pay 750 for that, extra for hall effect joysticks. how close we are to a perfect handheld baffles me but these companies keep adding useless trash like keyboards and displays above 720p 60
Between the thickness / ergonomics and the non-hall joy sticks, I'll wait until the next revision (assuming AMD continues to make relatively low wattage high-performing APUs) -- fingers crossed
@@Zeptrio The bigger screen with no bezels on the Neo 2 is so nice. Probably don't need the physical keyboard since the virtual keyboard works fine in Windows tablet mode.
Yes it's difficult choice between aya or win4. If the money it's no problem for you aya it's maybe better choise: screen is really impressive and 10% powerful at the same tdp. After gpd have trackpad and keyboard and better design. For me I prefer win4 because I like play in bed. For sofa aya it's best 😁
Thanks Phawx. BTW Ciphray's Bat link just goes to "Welcome to gpd_devices"........ Very frustrating after goofing around with LAYERS of MFA from Discord to not land where it was supposedly going.. Did it get moved?
Hello. Is the bat file outdated or something? I click on the discord link and that channel mentioned in the video doesn't exist. I don't know where to find the bat.
Hall ... Wld have made it pocketable.. without fear .. when I was deciding between GPD's GoVita or the Win DS...the Sticks, open face design(scratches and 🤫) and the fear of the panel being portrait pushed me to go with their homage to the Nintendo DS. Looking back the only thing they could have done was take the physical design of the two in consideration and preserved the stock of Hall sensors to use for the Win 4 the clamshell design of Win Max 2 would've extended the quality of life of the ALPS, though replacing them later would probably be more cumbersome..🤷🏾♂️ anyhow..the Adult in me is very happy with the WM2! The kid in me, as well, is satisfied ☺️...😒but still envies the guys that grab this thing...lol
These devices are becoming really impressive! It seems that if you wait 2-3 more generations you'll be able to run the entire PS3 library through RPCS3 smoothly on a handheld, that's absolutely insane. Let's hope Intel steps it up with their mobile Arc GPUs so we see the prices come down even further.
How do you actually set up the 6800U to run at 45W? I mean you mention that the fan will handle it, but we never actually see benchmarks at 45W and how it is achieved, given that the 6800U is rated 15-28W and the 35/45W would be the 6800 H/HS. I specifically ask because there are several “comparison” videos coming out by idiots, who take your video for granted and they claim that the GPD Win 4 is the fastest of the 6800U handheld, because it runs at 45W. I think that's such a stupid point to make because all 6800U units will run the same if set up the same and within the operating temperature (e.g. with a sufficient cooling solution)
Man this is so nice I wish I had one of those GPD win 4 it reminds me of Ps vita but I still have Ps vita 2000 white glacier I’ll play my Metal Gear Solid Hd collections 😊
I feel like if they reduce the specs in the lowest model, such as 6600U, wifi ac, and sdram, to match the price of SteamDeck, it would be a very considerable competitor to SD
I want a screen quality comparison between the Ayaneo 2 and the Win 4. According to GPD the color gamut on the Win 4 is 98%, while Ayaneo 2 is stating 135%. Funny thing is, GPD on their Indiegogo page was asked by someone what their color accuracy was, mentioning the Ayaneo 2's 135%, and they responded by saying that they think Ayaneo is lying about their color accuracy being that high. Kind of undiplomatic to respond with, and surprised me.
Hey, thanks for the review! When you do your teardown, can you compare the bumper (r1/l1) buttons with the Vita's? I'm wondering if it'd be possible to swap out those buttons for smaller ones.
