First clinical trial on vitamin D and COVID
Therapy versus best Available Therapy on Intensive Care Unit Admission and Mortality Among Patients Hospitalized for COVID-19: A Pilot Randomized Clinical study" (Spain, Journal of steroid biochemistry and molecular biology)
www.sciencedirect.com/science...
Objective
Vitamin D decreases Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
Effect of calcifediol treatment
Calcifediol can rapidly increase serum 25OHD concentration
25-hydroxyvitamin D
Intensive Care Unit Admission and Mortality
Spanish patients hospitalized for COVID-19.
Design
Parallel pilot, randomized, double-masked clinical trial
Setting
Reina Sofia University Hospital, Córdoba, Spain
Participants
76 consecutive patients hospitalized with COVID-19 infection
Clinical picture of acute respiratory infection
Confirmed by a radiographic pattern of viral pneumonia
Positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR
Procedures
All hospitalized patients received as best available therapy
Hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin
Allocated at a 2 calcifediol:1
Oral calcifediol (0.532 mg), or not
Oral calcifediol (0.266 mg) on day 3 and 7
Then weekly until discharge
End points, ICU admission and deaths.
Results
50 patients treated with calcifediol
One required admission to the ICU (2%),
Of 26 untreated patients, 13 required admission (50%)
p  less than 0.001
Of the patients treated with calcifediol, none died, and all were discharged, without complications
Of the patients not treated, 2 died
Conclusion
Calcifediol seems to be able to reduce severity of the disease
Larger trials with groups properly matched will be required to show a definitive answer
Rationale, activation of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) signalling pathway
Reduced ARDS
Cytokine/chemokine storm
Regulating the renin angiotensin system
Modulating neutrophil activity
Maintaining the integrity of the pulmonary epithelial barrier
Stimulating epithelial repair
Tapering down the increased coagulability
Ventilate
Don't abdicate
Dilute that virus
So you stay great
Ventilate
Don't complicate,
Complain or whine
You'll acclimate
Contemplate
When you congregate
Does the air here circulate
Instigate, Nominate
Educate, Motivate
I hope this message will resonate
That when we populate
Instead of isolate
Ventilate

When the study started about vit D3 , I started taking zink,vit D3 and vit c daily. I tested positive after a visit of an infected family member. I was absolutely not sick, not fever no headaches.. nothing. I have an office at home and did my normal work at home and even send all staff home and did their work as well. @R My story is similar. I was already on D3 2000 IU per day (take in the morning, it interferes with melatonin at night). I am 69, diabetic, asthmatic, obese but down 112 lbs after having my knees replaced. I do take Vit C ER for my exercise-induced asthma. In May, a covid-19 drive through test center was open and out of curiosity I got tested. My vit D levels were in the upper 30s at 2000 IU levels. My test came back positive but I was totally asymptomatic. I got two more tests both negative and was done. I read some findings in Europe about patients having high D3 levels coming through Covid-19 without incident. I upped my levels to 4000 IU and told my friends to do the same. My physical in Sept had my blood levels at 48 so I am not so high as to upset my doctor but am at the high end of what is considered normal (60).

Two years ago I started taking 30,000 IU of quality oral vitamin D3 for chronic respiratory, ear and sinus infections, which I suffered since being a small child. I am now 69. High dosing amounts were used to get my Serum 25OHD levels up from 23 to at or near 100. I clearly had vitamin D3 deficiency since my internist found the original level of 23. He advised 5,000 IU and no further tests were done. Shortly thereafter, I began researching valid D3 related medical abstracts from highly respected sources such as the NHS and NIH. I have a medical background and had recently read a then controversial book by Judson Sommerville, M.D., The Optimal Dose. He had been using high dose vitamin D3 in his practice for the last ten years after learning of its use from neurologist´s seminars he had been attending. Over time, his patients started coming in less and less frequently, and were becoming much healthier on many levels, especially as it pertained to infectious diseases. Many were no longer contracting flu or severe colds, as well as other benefits. I immediately started the 30,000 IU regimen daily. Within 6 months I started having much less frequent infections, and within a year was limited to only 4 to 5 infections a year. Currently less. I used to have to live on antibiotics. It is important to note that one must obtain a second 25OHD test a within a few weeks of initiating the high dose. You want to take the dose that achieves a max level of 100 to avoid any possible issues that may occur. Plus, it is recommended to have them done every 2 to 3 months until your level is appropriate and sustained. Overall, my sleep has greatly improved and I, finally, for the first time in decades, feel more energetic. My intestinal issues have greatly improved due to the discontinuation of so many frequent rounds of antibiotics and the introduction of prebiotic and probiotic consumption. I will leave the specifics of why to the experts on this therapy. For me, and for my husband, it has been nothing short of a miracle. Like you Dr. Campbell, I am baffled at why it has not been included in care for Covid patients, as well as the general population. This is actually not a vitamin, but is a hormone that regulates and executes so many bodily systems at an optimal level. Everyone should get tested. Makes me wonder if all of the discontent regarding supplemental vitamin D3 is emanating from the pharmaceutical companies, for obvious reasons, as it reduces their bottom line. So many people around the world could certainly benefit by keeping their 25OHD levels in the 90 to 100 range. This just seems so unethical. I have a history of skin cancer and cannot obtain the benefits of sunbathing, nor can I spend much time in the sun due to medications I must take. This is an affordable and amazing replacement. By the way, thank you so much for your tireless work on this issue and others you so knowledgeably pursue.

Anyone reading this, please don't take more than 5000IU daily dose without having your level monitored. It is possible to overdose.
@big0bad0brad
@big0bad0brad 3 года назад
@John Gohde Sun exposure can't cause overdose because UV also degrades vitamin D. Eventually it reaches an equilibrium where production and degradation cancel out (and you're probably very very sunburnt). It is possible to overdose on Vitamin D supplements. It won't happen at 5000IU, it probably won't happen at 20000IU but eventually it will happen over the course of months if you take too much.
@big0bad0brad
@big0bad0brad 3 года назад
@John Gohde The Merck Online Medical Manual has the following to say: “Because synthesis of 1,25(OH)2D (the most active metabolite of vitamin D) is tightly regulated, vitamin D toxicity usually occurs only if excessive doses (prescription or megavitamin) are taken. Vitamin D 1000ug (40,000 IU)/day produces toxicity within 1 to 4 months in infants. In adults, taking 1250 ug (50,000 IU)/day for several months can produce toxicity.” So no, I warned that people that desire to take more than 5000 IU a day should probably have their levels checked, giving a 1:10 safety factor below what is known to cause overdose in adults. I think my advice was reasonable. Yes you can probably go higher than 5000IU/day safely, but I think it would be dangerous advice to give on the internet, and wouldn't surprise me if there could be other medical factors that might affect the overdose level.
@marylh914
@marylh914 3 года назад
@@big0bad0brad Yes, you are absolutely correct. My D3 levels have been monitored for the last 8+ years and I was found to be very deficient even after taking 5,000. Actually the newest research shows that most people in first world nations are deficient, due to lack of sun exposure, and the old recommendations for daily supplementation are just that, very old. The newer dosing levels have yielded volumes of positive improvements in overall health, as well as control of specific issues. Toxicity is almost unheard of and if it does occur it is due to a lack of gradually increasing the dose to attain a 25OHD level in the neighborhood of 85 to 100. Neurologists have been researching the effect of high dose therapies for decades and it is extremely difficult to overdose if the proper protocols have been followed. If one has any type of cardiovascular issues they should be under the care of their cardiologist, but even then, there are benefits to be had with high dosage treatment. The incidence of calcium issues due to D3 are well documented, but incredibly low.

A natural remedy for thyroid patients was copied in the 70s and with the patent done, big pharma made sure the natural remedy (porcine natural dessicated thyroid) was no longer prescribed and then very difficult to get hold of. The I've been taking natural for 10yrs as have thousands who struggle to buy it abroad. I have seen the same dismissal of natural with CBD cannabis which is now widely available. Anything natural is squashed by big pharma and they don't have our health interest above their profits. This info is important

Tell that to the manufacturers of it! The health supplements industry is a multi-billion dollar industry. And it's often totally unproven and not backed by any science or clinical trials that taking supplements even prevent diseases or help make you healthier, unless you're really deficient. Even then, the best source of nutrients is always from eating a healthy balanced diet and natural foods, which contain micro-nutrients far more complete and more readily absorbed by the body than synthetic vitamins full of additives. What the doctor is talking about here is a special analogue drug version of Vitamin D which is a licensed medicine, not a Vitamin D supplement. That's not to say that his theory that raising Vitamin D plasma levels in the population (particularly those likely to be deficient or high risk of infection) isn't worth testing and exploring further, which is I think the argument he is making. But first we need to more scientific evidence and clinical trials to support this theory.

I have had cancer and thus had all the specialist that entails in the U.S. My cancer was diagnosed ten years ago. In July of 2010 my dermatologist recommended vitamin D and I asked if I could get my level tested, I was 54 at that time. It was July, I work outside in my yard a lot and live near the beach, of course I thought my vitamin D level would be fine. It wasn't, i was very deficient. A month later I was diagnosed with cancer - I told all my specialist that I had recently been diagnosed with a vitamin D deficiency - none, not one of these specialist cared about my vitamin D level. Thank god for my dermatologist - he is a very forward thinking doctor and scientist, he has helped me keep my level around 60 every since. I beat the cancer and now take vitamin D very seriously but try as hard as I do I can't get most friends to care about their level. I have been very disappointed in the doctors that have basically dismissed me when I ask about vitamin D. I'm so glad that more people are beginning to talk about the need for D - ten years ago when I would mention vitamin D the doctors would look at me like I had two heads!! You may be interested in my personal experience with Vit D. Several years ago I became aware of the Vit D problem. I therefore began taking a large dose of Vitamin D supplements. After a couple of years, I decided to buy a "narrowband UVB lamp" and, just before starting to use it, commissioned a Vit D test using "Cerascreen". The results showed that, despite taking large doses of supplements, my VIt D levels were barely adequate. I then started regular use of the UVB lamp and stopped taking the supplements. After a few months, (about 3) I bought another test from Cerrascreen, and lo and behold, my Vit D levels had more than doubled to the top of the normal range. QED.

This backs what my friend has been saying. He works in labs in Blackpool Victoria hospital and was saying there was a noticable difference between those with high/low vit D levels and the seriousness of symptoms from this virus. There were more asymptomatic cases among those with good vit D levels vs more serious cases among those with low levels. I know you're not a conspiracy theorist but there are a narrowing group of possible explanations for a lot of the things you are starting to question that don't make sense to you and more of those are falling into potential conspiracy territory including financial motivations. There is a huge difference between the profits from vit D and hydroxychloroquine and the funding to develop then sell vaccines and no matter how much we might not like to look at it there are people who we know provide big funding to certain groups that have been trusted to put out the "science" our governments have followed. Some of those funders are connected to vaccines and big pharma and these things should surely be investigated. If we have conflicts of interest at play then it needs stopping as it's costing lives for profit.

Political and financial interests are ruling this "crisis". Look into the actual difference in costs to develop, test and distribute vaccines vs prescribing vit D or hydroxychloroquine. You very quickly start to see it's not conspiracy or beyond any sensible logic to think financial interests are dominating. Imperial College London, Neil Ferguson and Oxford have all had funding from Gates and he's also sat as one of the few permanent board members for the Gavi Alliance. We all know the influence Ferguson and Imperial College have had on policies. It doesn't take much when you start to put various events and pieces together to start to see a picture forming. There's also some who think there was a political side with hydroxychloroquine as Trump touted it and some say there were folks who couldn't stomach him taking credit, especially so close to an election when it would likely swing the result dependant on his handling of the crisis. That's one though that we could only speculate on.

@@Sybildiscontent It is essential to take vitamin K2 with vitamin D3. Preferably the MK7 form, or both MK4 and MK7. When you supplement with vitamin D3, calcium absorption increases significantly. But calcium does not know where to go unless K2 is there. This means it can end up in soft tissue such as arteries and cause all kind of health problems. K2 ensures the calcium only goes to the hard tissues! Magnesium is also essential because it activates vitamin D, and regulates calcium. Not to mention the 300+ other functions it's part of!

It's the exact reason for flu being seasonal. just google trends this: "flu symptoms" you get a seasonal graph, that is nothing to do with getting flu from being too cold.

Sadly this can be the only explanation, coupled with the lack of promotion of this vitamin especially those with darker skin. There has to be some sort of 'health' agenda going on to keep people sub optimal in this necessary supplement especially for people in the Northern Hemisphere. Gp's also roll their eyes when asked to test for vitamin D levels, no supplementation for people living in care homes who rarely see the light of day . The lack of action is so mind blowing I'm afraid it has to be an intended ignorance, its all very sad.

Greetings Dr. Campbell from North Carolina USA. First let me say that I always enjoy meeting another Campbell! My great-great-grandfather was James Campbell born in Glasgow in 1821. I love my Scottish ancestry.☺ Secondly, let me tell you my experience. Last year my endocrinologist recommended that I start taking vitamin D because I was on the low bottom of what is considered normal range. So I have been taking vitamin D for a year now. Just letting you know that alot of us out here in the virtual world agree with what you said. When Covid first started becoming a threat in my area (in March 2020) I was grateful that I was already taking vitamin D. When I thought of the demographics of those who were having worst outcomes with Covid (blacks and hispanics) it made sense to me that maybe there was a connection in their not being able to produce enough vitamin D for themselves (from sunlight) because of having much more melanin in their skin. That many of them probably are vitamin D deficient! When I heard first reports about this possibility, it made alot of sense to me! (That there is a connection between vitamin D levels in the body and covid outcomes)!!! So, I also started giving vitamin D to my husband. Back in June (3 months ago) I came down with a rather strange illness for me. Normally the vast number of common colds that I have come down with (throughout my life) start in my head or throat. They stay there for a week or so and then only after some extent of time (like a week or two later) will the colds sometimes go down into my chest. Well, back in June I knew I had some illness going on. I could feel it in my head and throat and yet within ONE DAY it was down in my chest. I was coughing and did feel that it took a little extra effort to get a normal breath. I really wonder if I DID have Covid? But the fact that I have been taking my vitamin D faithfully, that helped me kick the Covid out of my system with no worsening of symptoms or inflammatory response. I wanted to get tested for Covid anti-bodies but those tests aren't cheap...so did not get one. But I do believe that I may have had Covid in June. But I wholeheartedly believe that the vitamin D helped me fight it off. There are alot of us who agree with you that it is hard to understand why more studies on the connection between Covid and vitamin D are not being done! It make tremendous sense to me that there IS a connection! So, everyone, grab a bottle of vitamin D and help you and your loved ones stay healthy! Thanks Dr. for your video!

I’d like to add my praise of vitamin D. I’m not a medic. I’m a white English female of 70yrs of age and along with age goes less efficient quick healing than when certainly I was younger. On Dr Johns video recommendation I have been taking 1000IU tablets for 3 months now. I haven’t thank goodness had Covid but 9 days ago I had a deep cut to my hand, in the past would have popped along to my GP for a couple of stitches in the knowledge it would take 2-3 weeks to heal sufficiently. Under current circumstances I decided to do what I could at home. I used steristrips but it was difficult to get the bleeding under control as I’m on anticoagulants. Over the next couple of hours the dressings had to be changed because of blood seepage. Eventually I got the steristrips to adhere. Now to my amazement, after only 9 days that deep cut has completely healed and I no longer need any dressings. I eat fish almost daily so am surprised at the difference, unknowingly I must have been deficient in this vitamin, so apart from Covid I heartily recommend people who haven’t had a vitamin D medical blood test and they’re over 60 yrs old or notice a decline in their bodies healing that they try take this daily. It takes a while to start working as Dr John says in this video, but the healing difference it’s made to my body can’t be overemphasised.

OVer half of the group that was counted as vitamin D deficient in the study went on to take vit. D supplements in the ~6 months since their last check. The paper is yet to be peer reviewed, and I can promise you that the peer review process will point out a great deal of variables that were either not taken into account, not mentioned, or not compensated for. An all of this on a sample size of less than 500 people. Nobody denies, or even has ever denied, there's a correlation between severe cases of COVID-19 and vitamin D deficiency. The real question is: is the correlation causal or not? Vitamin D deficiency is most common in older people, especially women (osteoporosis is a good demonstration thereof). We also know the elderly are more susceptible to this virus, are more likely to have an underlying condition, have a smaller lung capacity (normal part of ageing), often have a weaker immune system in case of secondary infections, etc... We know the case fatality ratio for the higher age groups is significantly higher than any other. Does it really come as a great surprise that we observe vitamin-D deficiency in a lot of patients who pass away due to COVID-19? No. Hlaf a year ago, researches had already noticed this, and asked themselves the same question: whether or not the link as causal. There's been a ton of papers and experiments on the subject. The overall conclusion is: correlation established, insufficient evidence to support a causal link. This translates to: Take vitamin D supplements if you like (don't exceed the tolerable dose). It won't harm you, it could help, but don't assume you're safe because you're taking vit. D supplements. I think that's pretty solid advice.
@lubricustheslippery5028
@lubricustheslippery5028 3 года назад
@@rolmops883 I agree with most of your conclusion. I know the problem with figuring out causality from statistics. What I disagree with is that take if you like, it should be strongly recommended because it's so cheap and is harmless (as long not overdose) and at the same time it's probably quite effective. The side effect for them with some D vitamin deficiency is that they will get generally healthier and also better deal with other infections. And it's probably way way more effective as f.ex. Remdesivir that is expensive and have bad side effects. I am living quite far north with very little sunlight in the winter and the only thing said about vitamin D in mainstream media is that it's dangerous... It can also be worse if people is afraid to go out. I think it's important to add that you shouldn't overdose because so many is stupid.

Heck in California a manufacturer can't even put on aloe vera gel that it "soothes' or "heals sunburn". Interesting to see people waking up to this. When Synthroid came out, they demonized Armour thyroid. When hydroxychloroquine worked, it was demonized with BS studies and then you see another drug come out... Noone says anything about gingko biloba w/zinc (yet there's some & perhaps a balanced amount in gingko?), yet it seems to work the same. There are people who want herbal medicine gone. That's why the AMA was created. Dr. Andrew Weil wrote about it. Very interesting read. I had it in school.

@@Yulrag True. Knowledge can be painful and make you feel, or realize you are powerless even for the powerful. Existentially: when we learn about our insignificance through cosmology, geology or biology, or our hidden selves by psychology etc. This can make everything we do seem pointless, but also be liberating. Practically: when you try to solve a big problem and see how complex and complicated things are.

Old news - however , always refreshing to see a GP taking notes from the ever so controversial “alternative medicine” .

I've been taking vitamin D3 daily (along with other things) for 4 years... I've often faced criticism for it... so this research makes me feel quite smug lol. I think Probiotics and prebiotic foods/supplements will be beneficial too.

I keep thinking back to a radio program I listed to about 4 years ago which was raising the concern, and I recall they used the very strong word of "epidemic" level of vitamin D deficiency here in the US. They mentioned how with our work lifestyles and fear of the sun and use of very strong sunscreen has led to this. It reminds me of the pine trees out here in the western US, stressed by drought, are stressed then susceptible to pine beetle attack. Just an observation, so glad to hear people much smarter than me digging in to this. Thank you.

Thank you. Very interesting and informative. I'm 72 and have been taking vitamin D for a few years now and I'm now glad I made that decision. 🙂
