VIVALDI | L'Estro Armonico | Concerto in G minor RV 578a in manuscript + RV 578, Op. 3 No. 2 

RV 578a is a recent addition to Vivaldi’s catalogue of works. The manuscript has always been in the Dresden collection with the correct attribution, but as the catalogue was originally conceived, a work assigned an RV number would only get an ‘a’ variant if the alternative source contained one or more movements that differed completely from the main source. Since the four movements of RV 578a (the Dresden source) all have their equivalent in the printed version of Opus 3 (RV 578), no distinction was made between the two sources for cataloguing purposes, and the manuscript never got any attention. It was moreover badly damaged in WWII and so conveniently ignored. However, the Dresden version contains very significant textual differences from its published counterpart. I will not attempt to describe them all. The suspended cadence at the end of movement 1 and the tierce de Picardie to end the work are evidence enough that the manuscript preserves the composition in an earlier state. F.M. Sardelli holds that it originated before 1703. I will note that some harmonies in the third movement, combined with the dotted rhythms, for example at 5:20 onwards, seem to me almost unbelievably French, much closer to the real thing than Vivaldi’s feigned ‘stile francese’ of later fame. No doubt Maestro Sardelli was aware of it and directed his players accordingly, reinforcing that impression. In the fourth movement, the ritornello is completely different: it is in fact a gigue, if I’m not mistaken. At least two such dance movements were excised from the works of Opus 4, though Bach knew and transcribed them in their earlier forms. In RV 578 it is striking to hear how the changes made in the published version altered the character of the movements. The later, better known version seems in fact like a rationalization, tighter, less excursive, more monochromatic and harmonically more conventional - as seen from the future; it was progress before it became convention. Such was the influence of L’estro armonico, perhaps.

I do think the later version is the more polished composition, everything is balanced well and the harmonic progressions are perfect. But the earlier one does have its charm, it feels like an earlier work, before Vivaldi streamlined and tightened it up. The 3rd mov is thd kost intetesting. It is indeed much more fremch in its earlier version, but it still lacks the lyrical beauty of the later version. And the 4th mov. Is just a fantastuc energised bop in its later version.
