Certain disorders are resistant to drug treatment and studies show that for some patients who have a spiritual foundation, and turn to religion for support, have greater success in overcoming the challenges of depression and other mental illnesses. These patients will often have a lower suicide rate as well. There are still strange behavioral patterns that go unexplained through mental illness diagnosis. So, I don’t believe it is far fetched at all to think some unexplained behavior arises from the spiritual realm. There are documented cases of spiritual possession that defy explanation. She was a talented super star married to another talented super star ..her illness if exposed to her fans would have destroyed her career at the time. The studios would not let that happen. Sexual addiction and drug and alcohol abuse is very common with people that are Bi-Polar and she probably felt a high libido when she was manic more than depressive. And it is hereditary and gets worse with age. It comes on stronger into adulthood. She wasn't possessed it was the disease. I feel so sorry for her and the lack of peace the poor thing had in life. They still do some shock treatments today with people but they put them under sedation before they do it. So, they don't feel anything no pain. I wished they had had the drugs they do now would have really helped her. And you never know what other medical issues were going on with her left undiagnosed. Such a troubled soul she was. She had a daughter by her first marriage and this daughter had children so she was a grandmother too and became close again to her daughter the last years before her death. She was a beautiful woman! Asylums were downright disgusting back then. It was hardly ever cleaned & neither were the patients. Many Asylums would take cash from soldiers & allow them all to come inside. And choose whomever patient (s) to have sex with. Alot of the women were so mentally ill. And to be confused & raped multiple times to boot.....& not understand the "why." It's truly shocking how many American Army guys would pay for their whole Platoon to have a "sex day" where they basically had sex with any of the women they wanted for that day. And however many they wanted. I'm definitely pro-military, not trying ro bash them. I was married to a Kiowa helicopter First Sergeant for about 10 years. 9/11 happened about 3 months after we got married. My ex husband found all the prostitution soldiers could hire in Korea & many places abroad appalling. He understood many of them were being sex trafficked. Anyway the soldiers that participated in raping those poor women.....it's appalling. Raping the weak & vulnerable, the very citizens they claim to "protect." Omg the Asylums back then were just ghastly!

SADLY UNLESS YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH mental illness, you’re unaware of how devastating it can be. My mother cared for her mother, who developed schizophrenia when her husband with his father dropped dead at 47. My grandmother was in and out of the mental hospitals for many years; fortunately, as she went into menopause, she came around, and shock treatment was useless one day. Mom went to pick her up at a mental hospital, and they said your mother thinks she’s a QUEEN. They said she refused to do the laundry. Mom said what is the matter is? Mom, you won’t do the laundry granny said no, that’s work. When I work, I get paid, so I’m not doing any laundry. She was not that gone. Fortunately, as she got older, she came back home. She said Ida needs me, I have to go, had to take care of her senior 10 year older sister, and they lived together for 30 years after that mental illness is devastating. Because we’ve lived with it our entire lives, I guess I never knew the difference. She was peculiar; The neighborhood loved her; she bought them all ice cream truck came around. everybody loves her. She was sweet as could be. My mother would cry every time she had to take her to the hospital. She was a twin born in Latviamother died in childbirth so did twin, so medical care not best. One day mom had to take her to one place for a check up and the lady screaming no come back tomorrow. Mom started crying and my grandmother is patting her hand Dont cry, Rita . It’s OK it’s OK and mom said now. I waited 3 months for this appointment, we’re here now you’re going to see us. now and they saw them then. My mother was correct. You don't jerk us around. Sorry about your sister. that was why I was afraid to have children. I was afraid to have a stroke. Unfortunately, at age 40 as a body Builder I had a stroke from coughing so hard. my cartoid artery in directed, split in half. My only side effect was complete paralysis on left side which I overcame no brain injuries. NEUROLOGIST says you look too good and you’re too young all women have headaches go home and come back tomorrow. Six hours later I was totally paralyzed. All women have headaches. I had a choice sue him, or get better. I chose get better.Thankfully I went back to work full time. Then to recover and was the only one that could lift my 270 pound father who was 6 foot 6 inches six.tall. When he had difficulty walking. As a result of Granny we learned tolerance for taking care of other people, I don’t regret it. I’m sorry for my grandmother and my mother, but learned to tolerate all people.

A brilliant, beautiful actress. But a tormented soul. Apparently, she suffered from bi-polar disorder (then called manic depression). Little was known about it and I doubt she got proper medical care. She may have also suffered from other disorders which we're becoming aware of now. I knew someone who suffered from this. After her manic episodes, she didn't remember ANYTHING about what had occurred. Luckily for her, she got proper medical treatment so she could live a productive life. But that was in the 80s. Even then, there was still a lack of medical knowledge. Thanks, Karine, for this insightful video of the great Vivien Leigh. P.S. Would love to see you do a deep dive on Natalie Wood. Did you know that the western movies, with the battles between Indians, and covered wagons, were based on the progams that many of the writers experienced firsthand in their native countries?

You did a great job with this video! I am in rehearsals right now for the play Orson's Shadow, based on the true story of when Orson Welles directed Laurence Olivier in Rhinoceros in 1960. I play Vivien Leigh at the end of the her marriage with Olivier. I played Scarlett O'Hara years ago when I was young during the 50th anniversary of GWTW during the two-week celebration in Atlanta hosted by Ted Turner. Now I am playing her as a middle-age woman because I, too, am now middle age. Although it was too difficult to be married anymore, those two never stopped loving each other. She kept his photo next to her bed until her death, and his son Tarquin and second wife, Joan Plowright , have both said they would come upon Olivier years after Leigh's death weeping and watching That Hamilton Woman with them starring in it and saying, "That was love. Now that was real love."

I love your videos and you have such a soothing voice. I have always appreciated the talents of Vivien Leigh but I never knew her backstory. Thanks for the insight and I pray that now she has found peace. Also, it is good to note that Hollywood studios pretty much owned the actor's and directors careers. They were widely restricted from everything from only being able to make a film with a one studio, to how they dressed and did their hair (on and off screen) to who they were supposedly dating. Those her happened to be gay had to hide that and even ordered to get married to try and cover that fact up. Celebrities have much more control of their lives now and can work for any studio that they like...you are so correct in saying that life wasn't as wonderful back then as we may think---it was hard on the screen and off the screen back then.

It could be argued that her demons were WHY she was such a good actress. Not knowing much about mental illness those days? Genius Carl Jung said all creative artists are dual. Freud said they are auto-erotic and narcissistic - just as a fact not a put-down. Jung and Freud wrote tons of essays on the nature of the creative artist. They are different from us. I don't know why but the gift always comes with dark and light personality. Dickens said 'Genius always pays for the gift.' They are sublimating their demons and torment and ultra-sensitivity constructively to produce what we call Art.When they fail to do so it acts on them destructively. They are always highly-strung and temperamental. It's the nature of the beast. Take away the inner conflict and there's no artist. Writers are worse.

@@Katya_Lastochka No kidding men and women are held to different standards; that's the understatement of the year. I don't agree at all that when a family is dysfunctional that they always blame the father. Even in cases of men committing family annihilation, people still try to blame at least part of the act on the now deceased wife. Perhaps most men have a higher libido than women, but certainly not all of them; the difference is they are not shamed for desiring sex/variety the way women often are. When men sleep around it doesn't cause concern? Really, for whom? I would imagine for the woman being cheated on, it causes one hell of a lot of concern. Some of us are not so comfy with the whole Patriarchal line of manipulative BS, but apparently, some of us have bought into it hook, line and sinker. Good luck with that, you're going to need it one day.
