The Venu has always on aswell. It's not the default to try and save battery life but you can turn it on if you want it
@GaugingGadgets
@GaugingGadgets 4 года назад
@@Howrse1000 True, but it is very different from the always on display of the Vivoactive 4. It only works on the built in watch faces and will only display the time and date if the selected watch face is displaying the date. In my experience it is not very reliable either. It also halves the battery life of the watch.

I'd like to emphasize there is a significant difference in the daily use of these watches. The Venu, while having a superior display, suffers from settings which force it to sleep. If you ever used a fitbit it works the same way. Yes you can go into the settings and choose "always on" but that's misleading. It is technically "on" but the watch face is significantly different than the normal watch face, and many of the 3rd party watch faces do not work at all in this mode. So you install a cool watch face only to realize that it will immediately hide and you're left with just the time only (in many cases). So you raise your wrist and there's a half second delay to see the actual watch face. Then a second later it is gone again. I had several watch faces kind of work where in the low power mode you could see the time, but then randomly they stopped doing that and the watch face would go to sleep despite having changed no settings. Now the Vivoactive 4 on the other hand doesn't suffer from this fatal flaw. Sure the backlight goes off, but the actual watch face is the same (just dimmer). So you actually have an "always on" display. This difference was big enough for me to hate the Venu. I came from a Charge 4 and wanted an "always on" watch. I don't understand why Garmin and other watch makers don't give users the option to leave the display on with 100% display settings on. Sure this will kill the battery life but let that be MY choice. I don't sleep with my watch so I charge it nightly, so if Garmin had the venu be on 100% of the time and I was left with 20hours of display time, that would be totally fine for me. I could always dial it back to sleep like it does now if I wanted to extend the battery life. Not having the choice to leave it on baffles me. Anyway, if you're looking for a watch that will ALWAYS display the watch face you want, don't get the Venu, get the Vivoactive 4.

One thing that really concerns me is the auto shut off feature on the venu. I was planning to download a display to make it look like an analog watch face. I really like the better color on the menu but worry about lag time of when the watch screen wakes up and whether or not it'll be default or custom view. Thanks
@thomaspuzio612
@thomaspuzio612 4 года назад
The lag is the same as a Fitbit Charge 3. It comes on but it almost immediately goes off. It’s honestly really disappointing in person. I have the vivoactive4 now and I couldn’t be happier. In direct sunlight the VA4 is intensely bright. The reflective display looks like the Venu’s oled when you look at it in direct sunlight. Conversely the venu looks less impressive in sunlight than in the dark. If the venu let you switch off the sleep mode, then that’d be the watch to get, but sadly they don’t. And as far as watch face is concerned, what is left on display with the “always on” part, is almost useless IMO. Merely the time or perhaps time and date, but you never know until after you download and install the face. With the VA4 you get that exact face all the time. It’s just a better watch experience IMO. I have used the watch for activities and it’s amazing. Love it. Would never go back. I did get the VA4s because I didn’t want a bigger face than the vivo had. This came with one complaint, the watch band length was short for me. So I had to pony up for Garmins replacement band which comes in two lengths in the box. The longer band is perfect and now I love the watch. Hope this helps

Your comment help me a lot to confirm that the purchased I made for my wife is the correct. I bought the VA 4s and still doesn´t arrive but I was worried because I saw the Venu later and the amoled display and looks nicer but after your comment I am sure I made the right choice considering that my wife likes small watches and has a thin wrist. I think generally women would prefer the VA 4S.

I've had both of these. I really wanted the Venu to work, but it simply wouldn't stay on. I had to return it. What's the point of having a fancy screen if it keeps going black? The user should be allowed to control the settings, but there isn't a way to, at least not with meaningful impact. It would take very little effort on Garmin's part to allow the user to set a PRECISE timeout, say 45 seconds when the watch is activated, in which it must stay on. Instead you get short/medium/long, whatever those mean, and long doesn't last for very long. It's frustrating in the extreme to be reading your stats and then the watch goes black to save battery. It will happen to you constantly. Adding to the frustration is the fact that the screen doesn't activate very easily either. It's not like a Fitbit, for instance, that flips on as soon as you lift your wrist. I was always tapping away at the screen to get it to light up. Then there's the issue with the quality of the watch faces, which isn't that impressive. Samsung does much better with their OLED screen. I mean, my god, get some designers to create a few dozen impressive faces for launch. The choices were lackluster, IMO. The Venu screen also isn't great if you're outside. I suppose if you were in a lot of shade all the time then maybe it would be okay. But for me it was like trying to read a cellphone screen in the bright sun. You're always hiding the screen in your shadow to try and see what it says. I want to see the data at a glance and I shouldn't have to fight for that. The Vivoactive 4 didn't have any of these issues. Its screen isn't as good if you're in the dark, but outside it's bright as can be. The brighter the day is the better, really. So that's my watch of choice now.

One thing I hate about AMOLED and OLED displays are that they will burn in like those old phosporous screens from the 90s. My galaxy S7 screen had screen burn issues and I had to upgrade to a Note 9 and I expect the same issue to occur in 2-3 years which sucks. So to me even with the nice colors and black OLEDs and AMOLED are a massive con, not a pro, to me.

I decided on the VA4 because of that. Have been using a couple of Samsung watches for workouts, mostly hiking, cycling and walks. They never seem quite instant, slow to respond or they simply don't turn on when using the tilt to wake gesture which means having to use the physical button. I also actually love a transreflective screen, coming from an Amazfit Bip so have no problems having the same tech in the VA4 and the ease of looking at the screen with ease when out on any one of my exercises.

#1 for Arches NP! Inside, the display on the Vivoactive4 looks much less vibrant. In real life applications, including outdoors, in the sun, is it better than the AMOLED? I have the Venu SQ now and really like it though the display is not the best- a bit small. Would you recommend I upgrade (I have 29 days left) to the VA4 (same price as the SQ w/music option) or the Fenix6 (3x more money.) I am just a casual runner and find it fun tracking lots of stats. Garmin says the battery lasts 20 hours on gps and 6 hours on gps+music.

Yes, that is correct. So with a full battery you could do a running activity that uses GPS for 20 hours.

Did you really just do a whole review and not talk about the most important sensor differences and accuracy with reporting? Are you serious?

I see no reason to switch from my Garmin Vivoactive 3 (43mm/20mm) to either VA4(s) nor the Venu as long as my VA3 still runs ... (The VA3 even took a "pause" after reloading for about 6h - nothing could be done. Now it's running again ... *strange* )

Yeah that is strange. I pretty much agree with you on the VA4. For the lower price of the VA3 you get many of the same features. Plus there are far more apps, widgets, and watch faces available in the Garmin Connect IQ store for the VA3.

The most successful was the first Vivoactive: battery life for 2 weeks and still going well. viviactive 3 Music after only 1 year of use was broken (plastic) so that it is impossible to put another bracelet. Ordered Vivoactive 4. Hope it will be not so fragile

@@marishkal1566 I did not like the design of the first Vivoactive! I cannot say whether it was most successful or not! My VA3 is still running. I also had a metal bracelet fixed by a watch maker! Silicon bracelets are nothing for my skin! :P

MusikPiratCH I mean, the first version was not so fragile. The problem of my VA3 Music is not the bracelet (I wear a leather one, can not use silicon),but the device was broken where you attach your bracelet (the plastic is completely gone).

@@marishkal1566 I have the non music version of the VA3. I cannot say that there is anything plastic where you fix the bracelet. The only thing my watch maker said, is the holes are not symmetrical! :(

Thats not a good way to explain the differences. First you tell people those are the same watch, then go in detail about some dumb cosmetic elements while the main difference is the screen and the battery life. You have no idea how to review electronics..then don't! Just confusing people
