Not gonna lie I thought this was just some dramatic Hollywood BS when I first saw this in the film. Wasn't until I did research on the real story I discovered this for real
That was rather gentle compared to these two: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g8XxQkXCmsU.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e21ZjwZGjiQ.html
"The name of this part of the track comes from a small airfield, which in the early years was located close to the track in this area." Well, that says enough.
What's crazy is that thanks to the slightly wet track you can see the point where the air is trapped on the flat floor and shoots the front of the car up. For sure there was something completely wrong either with the aero or the suspension geometry, did they ever release any information about what caused this? I could google but I find people explaining these things much easier to understand
Done a bit in car tuning (Toyota Supra) and resisted the temptation to fit a rear diffuser even though they look amazing, when you research the subject ground effect is very, very complex, when you look at the car rearing up its obvious its a track car with a slab of carbon fibre underneath, there is a lot of drag generated under a car and this flat underside gets rid of it, a track car will also want to use the ground effect to generate low pressure that increases downforce. Told you it was complex, and the only way to get all this theory right is in a wind tunnel. This car was obviously poorly designed and once cresting the rise that lovely flat bottom acted like a sail, this would not happen to a production road car without a flat bottom. Wonder if a civil claim was made against the constructor of the car?
Saw another angle of this accident... I really would want to blame it to the car's spoiler.... no shit.. if the spoiler broke off when the car lifted and pointed vertically it could have completely flipped and on its roof before it skid to the barrier and it could have never flipped out the barrier and into the spectator.. also if the catch fence was higher and stronger no car could fly outside the track...
