This series is so good! i've had the luck of being in sri lanka when covid hit so i've spent the last year and a half learning there to surf. Now that i'm back in England i can't wait to try the wave pool in bristol!!
Stuck in Sri Lanka surfing? Amazing! Where were you? Weligama area or somewhere else? The wave pool is fantastic but clearly a complementary training tool for surfing in the sea. Bet you will love it
@@averagejoe6355 Yeah around the weligama area. That was where i had my first lesson at a surf school. Also Arugam bay as well. Had some of the best surfing days at the main point there without the crowds. You guys would really enjoy Sri Lanka it has a nice variety of waves. Have you got any holiday surfing plans?
@@richardp1517 surfed the beach break at weligamma years ago but didn’t manage to get to any of the reef breaks. If I recall correctly the waves are seasonal and arugam bay wasn’t the right time of year to visit for waves. Heard great things about the area though. Would I’ve to revisit as Sri Lanka was amazing
Surfed the advanced setting in Alaia bay yesterday. To me it felt bigger, more powerful and more walled up than the advanced setting in Bristol. As you suggest advanced in Alaia bay is probably the same as advanced plus in Bristol. Strangely I had more success when the waves were stronger because my geriatric pop up went on to autopilot and started working again.
Advanced wave in Alaia starts M4, finishes T1. Bristol Advanced wave finishes M4. That being said, the inside section feels different too, more walled up at Alaia and it is independent of power settings. Off shore wind yesterday at Alaia also played a part. Saw surfers getting barrelled on the advanced wave. If you’re still around happy to say hello in person as I’m at Alaia this week
@@averagejoe6355 hi, Got my own account now. Thanks for the info. Good point about the offshore wind. I think it might be the prevailing wind so unlike Bristol it may have the wind advantage most days. That said, wind direction is way less of a big deal in wave pool due to almost no fetch for chop to be generated. Not sure I will be going to Alaia bay again this trip. I am on holiday in Villars and will be back next summer. I may even try a ski in the morning, and surf in the afternoon sometime in winter or spring. Maybe we will cross paths in Bristol. @@HODItv Yes, I was expecting bigger and more of a wall. But I’d probably still go for it. I guess my idea of a pro session is actually the “beast mode,” I thinks that is what its call?
It will come. As people get better and the business can understand which customers are good enough to surf waves of that standard it will become allowed. Worrying about people getting smashed and hurt is a big problem. If you spend enough time at these wave pools there are lots of people getting hurt so it's probably just a time thing. I reckon we will get to surf these waves in the future.
@@averagejoe6355 Good point, I've heard it's hard to gauge how deep it is because of the single color on the bottom. Check out the video's of Surflakes in Yepoon Queensland Australia if you haven't already. That's the wavepool I'd love to hit!!
@@gregoryray9920 yeah, I can confirm what you’ve said! The water in Switzerland and Bristol is super clear and on a sunny day it is hard to see the face sometimes. When you watch the barrels in Switzerland you’ll see loads of good people getting clipped by the lip as it’s very slab like and timing the wave and getting your skills up to speed is clearly a long road for any surfer. As for the wavepool in Queensland it looks amazing. That’s going to amazing to surf for sure!
@@averagejoe6355 We have a very similar wave pool to yours in Melbourne. I've never been there. I live in Queensland on the Sunshine coast. We get some great waves sometimes on the beachies. Love a good sand sucking rip bowl. There's a video on RU-vid 'Sunshine Coast as good as it gets'. That was a rare day that doesn't happen very often, you've got to paddle your ass off to get out there
@@gregoryray9920 been out to the goldie which was amazing, a mate lived at burleigh heads but didn’t get a chance to hit the Sunshine Coast. Hear amazing things about the place. Lucky you for living there!
