I am enjoying putting these vlogs together so much, that even though I didn't take a camera with me everywhere last week, I will share another quick flick through.
Notes:
1. Blogpost mentioned in video about my layout strategy. www.lizsteel.co...
2. I will post photos of the sketches tomorrow over at www.lizsteel.com/
Takeaway:
Another busy week with very little time for sketching and most of my sketches were made up once again of little moments - waiting for a train, in the taxi etc - so I do have a record of my week, but none of the sketches have been proper ones - ie. telling myself "let's sit down and sketch for 30 minutes".
But that's ok, as I have been loving this 8 x10 Stillman and Birn Alpha softcover and the compositional options it gives me. So even though my sketches aren't that exciting I can make a nice spread by adding text and thinking about composition. That's one of the best things about working in a sketchbook as a journal - it's more about the narrative than producing a masterpiece on each page.
This week's challenge: Actually schedule some time each day to sketch!
What about you, do you have a specific time to sketch each day?

Your work has been a big inspiration for me Liz and I'm enjoying the vlogs. Lately I've hit a bit of a wall with my sketching and I'm trying not to beat myself up over it too much. I feel sure it will come back. Meanwhile your vlogs are encouraging. Thank you.

Thank you so much for taking the time to record your vlogs! It's really quite wonderful to hear your thoughts and even your struggles because we all glean from one another's perspectives. I have tried to sketch daily and I loved seeing how you use that lovely stamp, journal not always immediately and challenged yourself with that 3" train deadline. Thanks Liz! Hope one day to be a part of one of your workshops. Until then I'll look forward to hobnobbing with you and fellow artists through video and blogs. Much Aloha!

Loving your vlogs! You are so busy yet you find and take the time to vlog... for all of us. Thanks! I simply adore your style and look forward to each new post. You are an encouragement and continual inspiration to sketch... even if it is to just grab a few minutes from life's never ending to do list....

thanks Fay! I am hoping to streamline this type so it isn't much more work than a blog post... certainly more fun!

Thank you for taking the time to do these. They really are inspiring. I do take myself out for scheduled sketching sessions in the local coffee shop. Carry my sketchbook with me everywhere. I still get stumped on what to sketch when I don't have a scheduled session. Your vlogs are helping me. Yesterday I purchased some new pyjamas and they made it into my sketchbook!

I always carry a travelers notebook and any chance i get, ( like you) I am getting in those 2 and 3 minute sketches. ( a real luxury at 5 minutes!). I am a freelancer so I only schedule real draw time when I am not working which isn't really fair to me, but it's the nature of the biz. I am lucky enough to be part of the NYC urban sketchers and I try and make it at least 2-3 times a month. And trust me, I really really look forward to those outings. I do find it's hard to get as much time as I would like, however I also know if I am sketching, it means I am not working. I try and value both.

I would like to see you demonstrate how you add your watercolor to your sketches and also how you make the foliage for the trees. It looks so easy but I am sure it is done with the just right amount of water and adding various harmonizing colors. They are beautiful.

I do not have dedicated times to sketch and as a result I find myself not sketching, which is disappointing. I used to always carry a journal and pen with me every where I went and I would do quick sketches and jot down my thoughts. I really enjoyed that. I need to start doing this again. I'm in such a rut. I enjoy your commentary very much! Thank you for sharing and God bless.

I love getting a peeks in your sketchbook. I find that if I don't schedule time to sketch I tend to not get it done.

Retired architect and now sketching daily and really enjoying it immensely. Curious to know where you buy you Stillman and Birn sketchbook as they are not available in the Blue Mountains.

Hi Liz. I am a backwards artist...I paint first and leave any line work til the end. I work from home and intentionally schedule in art practice times during the day. I would like to work on plein air work in 2018. Even just short moments in the car en route for work and personal errands! Thanks for your inspiration!

Hi Liz, thanks for your very inspiring vlog. I've actually fallen off the sketching daily wagon and trying to get back on. To answer your question, yes, I find setting time aside daily helps. I have not done so for a while, and this is probably the reason I haven't sketched for a while. I find that the period I was most consistent was when I did schedule time to sketch as part of my end of day ritual. I'd sketch a one thing which stood out the most and journaled the other details/reflections for that day. The structure of a fixed schedule really helped me, and I plan to get back to that. Another thing I struggle with is sketching on location and sketching quickly. I care too much about making it just right. So I haven't actually sketched on location yet. How do you sketch so quickly?!

I get up every morning at 5am and draw...outside sketching is a little harder as I am a full time artist and am usually getting ready for shows... But I do draw every day...sometimes I can get in some time in the afternoon...thanks for sharing your sketches.

Hi Liz, great vlog. I'm a beginner and I love sketching. I would love to do it more but I seems to find some sort of excuses. Plus I do not go out sketching because I don't like people looking at me ;) But soon I'll go on holiday and I would really love to sketch those moments so I might, like you, "prepare" for the event by sketching everyday, everything ;) Thank you so much for this video and have a great day or evening :)
