Just found your channel (thanks YT algorithm) and I love that you’re an artist and architect! I love watercolor especially and playing with new supplies! I really love that you and others have validated me to have more art supplies than I really need. Thanks for posting your wonderful videos!!

Hi Liz, inspiring to see your work in your sketchbooks. I am all the way in Denmark, an expensive place to buy art materials. Have been experimenting getting different art materials for my sketchbook, am very drawn to everything with line… Fell in love with Derwenrt graphitint pencils and their inktense pencils. They are both water soluable and I use them a lot in my sketchbooks along with Neocolour II and different pens. I use several sketchbooks in different sizes and with different paper at the same time, some for evening sofa, others for outdoor and am right now on a sketchbook online course with Cheryl Tave.

I LOVE buying art supplies! Two years ago, when I fully embraced my artistic bent, I bought everything I thought I wanted to try, some of which are hardly touched today, some not at all used. These days, I purchase what I'll use, often using them in the same day. I've also made it an imperative to reach back and used the old unused with the new...it's a goal. I love your work. I picked up watercolors inspired by your work and others who I watch. I hope to get good enough with watercolors to one day participate in Urban Sketchers. Thanks for sharing all you do!

I confess, I'm an art supplies hoarder! I just think all the colors are so beautiful, and I want to own them all!! But, I recently saw a quote somewhere on Instagram about using more vs buying more. So that has become my goal: use what I have and really improve my skill rather than buying more supplies that I don't really need. Love the weekly vlogs!

Hello Liz, I enjoyed this very much! As far as art supplies go, I am another one who, when face-to-face with art supplies, wants all of everything. That's why I own over 500 colored pencils - but I do my main work with watercolor and pen and ink! I recently pinned this quote over my desk (from Arthur Guptill): "You surely cannot become an artist by the simple expedient of collecting art supplies." It shames me into working every time I find myself about to browse some online art supply store. :-)

Being a person who has loved pen and paper since early childhood, I am addicted to buying anything related. I started attempting watercolors about 15 years ago. I am still a beginner and have never really produce a painting worth its weight in paper. However, I have enjoyed this journey of pure play. Late last year I decided if I was going to paint I had to become a better sketcher so that is my lasted project. Now this I can say I have seen improvement. I am always tempted to go back to acrylics, which I find much easier to use, but I can't let myself give up the challenge of learning watercolor painting. Even though my work is far from even "good", it is a most relaxing hobby and calms my nerves immediately. I will go on buying something new when it catches my eye, even knowing it is a false hope it will help me improve. I plan to keep on enjoying this hobby.

I limit my "New material" spending. I usually only buy new items at Christmas. This year I am looking at the w&n or ds wc crayons and the faber castell Matt pencils. I usually add a new color or 2 for my water colors.

There may be a long interval between buying ( usually on ‘special’) and actually integrating them into my work. I like a workshop which separates the technique and material from the creative process. I enjoy your confessions of being a procrastinator. Me, too.

I really love buying and receiving art supplies. I dabble and make swatches of each colour and the odd comment usually surprise or disappointment. I had very little as a kid, I would use the other side of old envelopes or tear open an old cornflakes box and draw on the inside with just an HB pencil.Now I'm in my 60s alone and having finished parenting, I treat myself to small sketchbooks or a few pencils thru open stock. I recently received thru the post, 2 Derwent china white pencils. I love them for highlite on eyes. My other treat is logging onto RU-vid and watching other artists such as yourself, sharing tips and experiences. thank you from a fellow Aussie

Hi there Liz, I also live in Sydney, I stumbled across your channel trying to look for urban sketch groups in Sydney. I love watercolour and mainly pen and watercolour is my favourite. LOVE your drawing style. Will be watching the rest of your videos. The book looks great as well, have been looking for something of that size for a while. Would love to hook up for a sketch day sometime. Never been urban sketching before.

Hi Liz, loving your videos! Just wondered which brand of watercolor markers you were referring to in this video. You mentioned that they didn't bleed through the paper and that's what I'm looking for. Thanks again for the lovely videos, I'm learning a lot.

I think we all have a collector gene in us, I did that with fly fishing equipment & now with sketching as well as all that goes with that. I am fascinated with the 'grid' you place under your page to make lines for writing. Did you make it or purchase it & where if you did? Thank you for your very fine videos, took me a while to realize you are a lefty as am I.

I too like to buy new tools and get some artistic "juice" going. But many times after the initial burst of excitement they end up in the back of the drawer, are you hearing me Copic markers? I have to work on my discipline about purchasing new stuff and making sure I am really going to use it.

I'm always drawn to new materials, but I can grow easily bored if they don't do what I want without too much coaxing. I do love a full day of playing with materials, and I seem to have an obsession with organizing and cataloguing and swatching them. No idea why. 😄

I have lots and lots of different art supplies and sketchbooks and at times it is overwhelming when I have 7-12 books started. I know what you mean about settling on a few things that work. I love the sailor fude pens and Faber Castell watercolor pencils. I also use 4 sizes of rapidity graph technical pens. Recently I have been developing a brand new technique I call "carving paper" and I am writing a proposal to demo at the 2017 USK Symposium in Chicago. I live in San Francisco so this one will be as close as they have been to me..I put together a sketch bag that is about 6"x9" and hold a sketchbook and a good supply of pens, pencils and a tiny watercolor box.. Limiting what I paint with often allows for more creativity as you have to really use what you have, don't you think? Thanks for your blogs, love them...
@LizSteelArt

yes - so true that limted supplies = more creativity! Looking forward to meeting you in Chicago.

So 2016 was the most expensive year for me, meaning I spent a lot on new art materials because I got more income than I was used to (which is good!), but honestly it makes me feel overwhelmed sometimes. So i like to keep out of sight what I am not using at the moment, and then switch around between mediums every now and then. I also invited a painter friend on an "art-date" where I took with me some supplies that i am not using too much, and we just played with it like kids would do. Really fun!

Most art supply stores (at least that I've seen) hang their watercolor tubes with the "cap up". However, I noticed at the end of this video...you're hanging them "cap down" with paper clips. (Clever use of the clips, btw! :) Care to share your reasoning for the cap down? Just wondering what your thoughts are. 😊 🎨

I lean towards watercolor but not all of my journals can handle water or alcohol markers, so I use Tomboy for my daily planners (Molskine)

Ok, I don't know to many artist that are not in heaven when they visit an art supply store. That being said I love buying new supplies but I normally try to have a need for them. I do try to master them because I don't want them sitting in my stash collecting dust. This doesn't always happen though.

I was bought a set of 6 watercolour markers and some pigment markers. Must admit I haven't taken the time to learn how to use them properly. I think I may need special paper for the pigment markers. I'm sure I could be more imaginative and try to incorporate them somehow into my sketching/painting......!
@LizSteelArt
@LizSteelArt 7 лет назад
the pigment markers work best on the special paper... normal paper will absorb too much of the ink. Most markers blled through too much to make them really sketchbook friendly.

No- moleskine is still my favourite sketchbook to sketching outing and travelling but for daily use (more casual) its the alpha. Weight and number of pages is the big reason.
