In this video I show you how to hold your drumsticks correctly and strike a drum properly.
This is what I’d typically teach a complete beginner in their first session with me.
All you need is a pair of drumsticks to complete the exercises.
You don’t need a drum, just a surface like a cushion, pillow, or an upturned bucket. Feel free to get inventive!
There’s a few do’s and don’ts in the video, and a couple of practical sticking exercises to complete.

‘4-3-2-1’ exercise
Both of these exercises will help you build accuracy with your sticks, strength in your wrists and general hand-eye coordination.
Feel free to test out the different grips and see what feels most comfortable for you. You can make adjustments as you go along.
Filming yourself would be a good idea. The camera doesn’t lie!
