In this VLOG I talk about the missing piece in my recent quest to get better at candid Street photography. I found that shooting black and white Street photography has been the missing piece of the puzzle for a few reasons. I like the classic, timeless feel of my street photos. Black and white photography really complements my overall Street photography.
I use my fuji x100v for my daily photo walks and I love to use my favorite film simulation; Kodak Tri-X 400 for all of my black and white Street photography.

As Gen-x, my photography journey started with black and white, and that said... i find it hard for the younger generation to approve of this output. (Too old timey, I'm told) Color is still a novel experience for myself and sometimes when im shooting for myself i choose B&W while keeping RAW in my back pocket so that i can have a reference to what i was going for. Personally, i love both, but removing the color either distills the image to its basic shapes, or i get rid of structure entirely and rely on the sheer emotion of that particular color pallette.

I primarily shoot B&W. It is a good idea to shoot B&W in jpeg with a color raw backup. This gives you maximum flexibility. An advantage, for me, is I can better see the highlights in B&W and helps the color image. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

OG street photographers. Haas, Leiter (two of my favorite photographers), and Herzog are surprising choices as they were early adapters to color street photography. The Haas & Leiter books are gorgeous, new books, and affordable. Great choices. There is a new Winogrand color book. I don’t know why color street images were looked down upon. I understand the B&W vs. color argument. It can’t be as simple as color cost more money to shoot and color is harder to develop. As an old guy, I have used B&W more than color. As I mentioned to mtmccornack below, sometimes I like to shoot B&W jpegs and raw. I see B&W in the EVF. That gives me maximum flexibility and I’m better able to see the highlights for the raw images. Thank you for this inspiring video. It’s time for me too to try BW. Where I live it’s mostly overcast so it’s perfect. As you said to shoot B&W is not easy but I’ve got some good tips from your vlog.
