Hiii :) So, I’ve been using the iPhone 15 Pro Max for the past month and decided to shoot a simple & mostly asmr vlog using only this phone. Because... I’m hoping to travel pretty light in the near future… and super curious to hear what you think of vlogging exclusively on a smartphone?
Would love to hear your thoughts, and as always - thanks for being here! ♡

Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. After 14 months of SUV living - I bought the van I now call home. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world, while also having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐
*My van is a 2019 Ram ProMaster 1500 High Roof, 136" WB with 57K miles*

Although I agree that anything you seem to touch is magic…knowing how beautiful this particular area is and seeing it through the lens of the iPhone 15 Pro max, I was disappointed. I can see that the phone is REALLY struggling with light. In the part by the lake when the sun is on your face, it’s super obvious to me. I recognize the same issues I have with taking photos on my iPhone and my DLSR. I don’t have a 15 pro max, but I have the 14 pro max and this video shows me that Apple still hasn’t completely made my Nikon obsolete just yet lol 😂 But if there is a need to travel light, I’d say it’d be a great tool. But I wouldn’t depend on it. You have a wonderful eye for catching the breathtaking beauty of light and color in our natural world. The 15 pro max struggles to meet the needs of your creative vision if you ask me.

Surprised how good the camera is on the 15 Pro Max. As far as the ASMR I love the sound of the wind blowing, the water running, feet crunching the leaves this time of year. even the sounds of food cooking, so it has its place. But I also like your voice overs, you have a melodic cadence when you talk.

Wow Christian! I’ve never seen or heard of this valley! It’s absolutely jaw-dropping!! Definitely now in my top five places to visit when I get the chance. Whilst your videography is still utterly mesmerising to watch in this vlog, it definitely didn’t have its usual cinematic quality. Not because your eye was any the less precise, simply because your Canon R5 produces a much more pleasing image (in my humble opinion) Irrespective of the mechanism used to capture your travels to this incredible place, we your audience are privileged once again to be allowed into your life for a short while Thank you for your generosity . Your videos, no matter what gear you use, are a cut above about everything I see on You Tube. I believe you have a unique talent for composition, lighting, color, and capturing the moment. Some day you should do a video on your techniques. Not a how to video on focus, ISO, lens and so on, there are plenty of those type of videos out there. Not another gear review, you did that recently, and I enjoyed it, but perhaps on how you visualize a video, a moment, a mood. I’m not entirely sure what I am suggesting, and perhaps this could never be explained or taught.

Hi Christian. The portability and convenience of your iPhone is hard to beat when it comes to traveling light. The image resolution, particularly on the face looks really good. (That's been a challenge for the iPhone up until their recent versions.) -- The vibrant and sometimes muted colors, the bigness of the mountains with their colorful valleys and rocky peaks, sublime. Watching was a perfectly calming segue to my own video editing. Cheers.

Hi Christian, thanks for showing the difference of professional gear and a smart phone. It is not bad, but it definitely lacks the definition, sharpness, depth, brilliance of your other vlogs. To me the best part of your films are your storytelling, the way you frame and compose shots, the feeling of immersion in nature. I think that can be accomplished with phones too as you demonstrated here. But I find audio to be a hugely important factor and phones are still lacking in that regard. A tiny breeze creates a rumble. There is less range in the sound. Can you get an external mic for it? If so, I think you can still make high quality films. How nice would it be to travel that light!
@ChristianSchaffer

first of all, thank you so much for the beautiful scenery! 2nd, I just want to let you know that there are still people like me and my wife who appreciate the look of the bigger cameras over a phone, and who also appreciate the extra efforts you have to spend to work with the more demanding equipments. The iphone has come a long way, but I personally still find my attention was drew away from the beauty of the scenes to its image quality, such as the busy details of the trees, the unnatural HDR effects, sometimes lack of motion blurs, and some blocks of noise or somethings from what was supposed to be a pure blue sky. I know part of this must be YT compression, and your original footage probably look better. To answer your question, I would hope that you continue with your nicer camera, but I would hesitate to really ask you to do that, because that would cost you more work which is not what I meant to ask for. So it's really your choice, and I appreciate the views you bring online anyway.
@samm0110
@samm0110 10 месяцев назад
Right! While amazing in its own right, computed iPhone video just 'feels' different, especially it's dynamic range and tone mapping. Occasional yellow leaf edges against deep blue skies that go blurry & fuzzy. And sometimes when the camera is moving quickly through a scene, high-detail object movement around the edges get really janky. But it all boils down to the stories you tell us.. and regardless of the hardware used to tell it, this one was real tasty. ⭐ Thanks C!

Thanks, Christian - that was like a little mini-break in the wilds while I was doing office work in London - the IPhone was great - you really nailed those golden aspens. Your 'stick it on a tripod and walk away then back' routine seemed safe on that trail 😁😁 Shots were as crisp as that Colorado air. Thought you were resolved to always wear proper hiking boots on the trail after that twisty ankle episode? 🥾Love the way those western towns grow out of the landscape. For a micro processor in a phone that weighs next to nothing, the quality is impressive. Is there a difference between this and a full frame camera and a high quality lense? Of course! But it's a minimal difference. Maybe some exposure issues here and there stick out, but it's minimal. For a run and gun style, with the ability to set up a shot and tear it down quickly, this whole production was really good. The ability to carry, say, a super telephoto lense, camera body, tripod and this phone would take pounds off my back... and that's exactly why I just ordered a Pro Max! Question: did you film in log or similar and color grade?

If you wouldn't have said anything, I would have thought it was your normal filming equipment. You always show the most amazing colors and views. I am a big fan.

What an amazing place, those fall colours 😍 - something we just don't see in Western Australia. A detectable difference between iPhone vs R5 footage but wow, still gets an amazing story across. Did you just use the iPhone audio, that seemed lower quality.

The land of my youth. So very many memories. Thank you so very much for sharing this. Maybe it’s time for a winter visit home for me to re-explore the home that made me.

Yes I can see the difference, but it’s subtle. I am by no means knowledgeable about this. But to lighten the load oh yes go for it! Your videos are still magically. ❤

WoW! Stunning views Christian, it's the photographer not the camera that makes the difference.

Chris - I too unloaded my Nikon ZII 7 and lenses ($8k) for the iPhone 15 Pro Max. I shoot RAW always, its video is spectacular, and I edit entirely within Apple's sphere of influence. No complaints from here, whatsoever. On another note: I'm 74 years old, so KISS is always my guide star now. Love what you do. Be safe and within a wink of God's eyes. - AJC

So beautiful. You do such incredible w or. I’m glad you need YT as a creative outlet. When watching, I want to shout out to you to make more noise as you hike to keep the bears away. 😂

As per usual you put together a really beautiful video that I would have no problem watching. The quality of these phone cameras are amazing however I did miss the out of focus & bokeh moments you usually add to your videos. These moments add a dreamy layer to the beautiful regions you display on your channel. Thanks for the beauty!

iPhone 15 produces videos nicely in wide shots, but close-up shots of trees and faces are slightly blurry. But we know it's just a smartphone. The landscapes are fantastic, especially in autumn when the trees take on a special color. In Poland we call this time "golden Poland in autumn", when trees change the color of their leaves to gold and red. It is a beautiful colorful autumn period. I once watched a vlog of a couple from Brazil who were visiting Polish castles and what was characteristic was that they were surprised by the color of the leaves on the trees because they had not seen such leaves in Brazil. They were more fascinated with trees than with castles in Poland.

iPhone 15 pro max camera not too shabby. Except the light flickering a little in one of the shots, all good. Love the walking sounds as background music

Great views as always! Video compression is noticeable, especially in active shots. It lacks the storyline/narration; but the music definitely helps. Happy travels!
