I spent an afternoon fiddling with one of my Dreamcast VMUs and some old Nintendo DS parts trying to add a backlight to the LCD screen. I'm really happy with the results and how it turned out.
I used the tutorial below and a few other forum posts from around the interweb as a guide. I tweaked some things to suit my personal needs and the parts I had available.

Thanks for watching!

Beautiful Mod. Next to my xbox360 the Dreamcast is my all time favourite console. Thank for publishing your VMU mod. I'm enjoying this on my birthday. So it is double pleasure to see your work. I was dreaming about VMUs the night before funnily enough because I was playing Texas Hold'em on the xbox360 when I realised the Dreamcast VMU was the ideal medium for poker. Now I hope I can find Texas Hold'em for Dreamcast, the VMU is perfect!!!

Very Very cool. I've always thought it was kinda hard to see the VMU screen casue I usually play games in the dark.

@RetroGameTech I subscribed, just alone for your saying that you love your DC more than your 360. I found your video because I've been thinking about doing something like this, and had hoped that someone had posted a tutorial video. I've seen a site where a guy's been using old scrapped scanner/printer LCD's as perfectly shaped backlights for VMU's that make good, even lighting. It didn't look too difficult a DIY project. I have some cool DC projects I know you'll really like.

Freaking awesome man, I want to do this now with my QY70 (old portable MIDI sequencer with the same type of non-lit screen, albeit larger)

@JerryTerrifying I was really surprised with how well it turned out myself :) . I think I'm going to make another now that I know what I'm doing. There are a couple of quality improvements I'd like to make over my original attempt. And yeah, works perfectly for gaming in the dark :).

@WhatAreYouBuyen Thanks, yeah I'm happy with how it all turned out (apart from a couple accidental marks on the LCD). Didn't you mod some parts on your guns?, battery packs?

I just made this and it looks cool ! I used a psp backlight cuz my screen got cracked :( but I'm happy with this ! I only used 2 LEDs and still have 4 more to put them into 2 more VMUs !

@RetroRoadshow No worries. I was the same until I found about the mod by chance while browsing ebay one day. Googled it and found that tut I linked to in the description. Props to the guy who originally developed this mod! I'm glad the vid has alerted at least one other person about the mod though :). Make a vid when you make yours!

@neotheonly01 No. I said I had a big pile of old DS parts and I used one of the screens. I repair consoles so usually have loads of junk parts lying around to recycle and use in projects like this.

I've seen a video where someone was using old trashed out printer/scanners' 2" backlit LCD display for backlighting the VMUs. He did a really good job, and it seemed like a perfect match. Sadly, I don't have his, or your tech-prowess. Someday I'd very much like to pick up some of these.

@Retrogamer71 Hahaha, same here, although I might have to say the DC is my favourite then 360. Glad you enjoyed the vid! :)

@EpicTwistedOne There two pins according to the link, one is DC 3.3v the other is VMU 3.5v. here's the quote: "if you want use pin 14: Resistor= 3,3V - (your leds volts) / 0,02A (if leds are too bright, try to divide for a lower current, like 0,015. if too weak try 0,025 or 0,03) if pin 1: Resistor= 3,5V - (your leds volts) / 0,02A (same as before)"

Hiya! The place you linked seems to be down for me, could you tell me where you soldered the led's to in the vmu? i'm a bit afraid to mess it up by soldering to the wrong place, but i'm burning to try it lol

@Blastadon at 1:35 - 1:46 he says it self powered you don't need any extra battery's it works off the power of the controller its safe to say it works off the power of the controller but you can easily add a positive and negative lead to an external power source with a small switch out side of the vmu if you wanted to. or you can get your volt tester and look for the on and off switch and see if there is enough extra non used power that you can run a led off of

@LarryBundyJr Do not fret, all those DS consoles were terminal in one way or another. Think of them as organ donors :P

@retrogametech Do they still light up on their own battery power, or just when plugged in to the controller?

Watch out...it's a CR2032 battery eater! But hey, the backlight barely uses any power, so that's cool!
