When I was little, I thought the Dreamcast controller had a screen in the middle to play your console games on instead of a tv. Now that assumption has become a reality.

That's the idea of what i thought the VMU was supposed to be back in the days. But considering the technology back then, it was decent enough for a memory card :D

This is amazing! Imagine playing this standing on the bus or train in peak hour traffic, theoretically you could play Pokemon or other RPG's with one hand comfortably.

Correction: EmulationStation is merely a UI (frontend). Behind the scenes you need actual emulators. In this case you're likely using RetroArch.

cute handheld, great for commuters and would fit in the pocked, plus no analogue stick to get caught on things. Kind of glad of the small battery, I think any longer than 2 hours a time my hands would cramp up

You pretty much called what I would say. It's pretty cool, but I know I wouldn't be able to play that comfortably and a screen that small would be hard at times. I still kind of want one.

I was thinking I could take one of these and not only run retro pi with it but turn it into a little pocket smart device to check notifications and such.

This looks like a great place to ask for advice! I have a Transformers “Music Label Soundwave” working MP3 player from several years ago. Great Transformer, awful MP3 player (no screen, severe limitations) and I want to upgrade it! Replace the player inside and add a screen where his cassette/chest is. Any ideas on how to do it or know anyone I could hire to do it? This VMU is absolutely amazing!!!

I want to like these but I'm worried that working VMUs are being destroyed to make them and the stocks of Dreamcast games and accessories are not plentiful.

I really wanted one, but the funkey s is what I can afford and hell it plays PS1! I got it in the same crystal blue so I will compare it to my crystal blue non-modded VMU.

terrible placement of the shoulder buttons. they probably didn't consider how small the whole thing is and placed them lower because the form factor is long and the top seemed too far away from the main buttons.

It would've been wicked if it could plug into to dreamcast controller like a switch

I've got an Android smart watch that can emulate Dreamcast which I'm considering modding like this, but it has no otg connection which causes an issue at adding controls.

Looks like one of those Digi Pet Pocket devices! I'm not digging it, the screen is way too small. This little device will make people appreciate the Game Boy Micro more.

Seems to be quite a trauma for the handheld pandora not having shoulder buttons, for you to keep repeating that (while the vast majority of retro games and especially the arcade games can easily do without)

THIS is awesome BUT... why have 2 shoulder buttons to play your GB Advance games (or super nes) without an X or Y button? Still this is pretty kick ass and I'm not surprised it was made out of a VMU, I LOVED my Dreamcast. LOL seeing gameplay on this reminds me of that episode of Lazy Game Review (or was it Game Sack) where he superimposed Shenmue over the screen as a joke for playing games on a VMU and because of that anyone who owned a dreamcast with over half a dozen VMUs and actually used them for games like time stalkers must also feel like watching sonic on this device makes your brain feel like, "this is not real!!" lol

lol ... totally a novelty.. a lot like the Pocket Sprite but a 1000 times better... and totally a fanboy gadget... "not the most powerful because it has to fit in this tiny little handheld".. lol.. still more powerful than a rs97 and countless Chinese full handheld devices.. but if it's a Pi Zero surely the HDMI is usable??... and if it's a Zero W there must be bluetooth for external controllers.. could be the best potable mini console for low end systems... Trick missed if they lost certain bits of hardware functionality.
