VNAV: What is it and why is it important? [Vnav basics and how the Airliners descend!]

This video is about VNAV or Vertical Navigation.
When flying in a small aircraft at low altitudes is easy to know when to start the descend for the landing.
However, when operating in an Airliner into busy airspace the calculation of the Top of Descend becomes more complicated.
This is so because, in busy Airspaces, such as Madrid for example, you have in your Standard Arrival multiply altitude and speed restrictions.
So, you can imagine that to calculate your top of descend correctly and fly a continuous descend to the next restriction is not an easy task.
And what happens if you have more tailwind or your aircraft is heavier, or you need to use the Anti ice, etc?? Your descend path will be different compared to an ideal world descend without all these variables.
Here is when the VNAV plays its rule. The Vertical Navigations takes into account all these variables and provides you with an accurate Top of descend.
In order to have a correct VNAV path descend you need to insert the data into the FMS accurately, otherwise, the VNAV will make some mistakes.
The Vertical Navigation calculates the descend path going backward from the runway.
It starts from the runway or the missed approach point and calculates a constant 3 degrees from the last restriction, then it will give you a segment for your declaration, a segment for every altitude restrictions, then it takes into account the weather, the weight and any other factor the may affect your descend.
And in the end, it will give you a correct Top of Descend.
Comparing an ideal world descend (without external factors, deceleration and altitude restrictions) with a real descend you will notice that the Top of descend position will change substantially.

Yes, please. An indepth look at VNAV / RNAV with practical demonstration on the simulator will be most helpful to better understanding. There are soooooo many variables to these, it can be quite tough to grasp with just reading the ATPL theory.

Excellent video, as the other ones on your channel. I remembered that the "thumb rule" of "multiply by three" had to be applied to the difference between your flight level and the airport elevation (we could have a 2.000 ft airport elevation, for istance). Anyway, in real world, it is a small difference for a rule that is "approximated" for definition.

Thank you Captain! Please can you make a VNAV video for climb as well as descent using the VNAV descent VTK prompt and when it is best to follow and best to abandon VNAV such as when ATC takes over your descent profile.Also it would be nice to demo a GPS Approach and differentiate between RNAV and RNP Approaches particularly showing LNAV/VNAV and LPV(if 737 is certified for LPV) minimums.

What height is selected for VNAV? And at which point/fix exactly?
@leonegentile6081
@leonegentile6081 2 года назад
Hello Captain, loved this video. I have a question as usual : If the CMD disconnects (both A and B) while you're on CRZ Altitude, do you actually perform all of these calculations and start descending manually since you don't have LNAV and VNAV? You wouldn't even have HDG select, Speed etc. So my question is, if both autopilot fail on Cruise Altitude and Speed, what are you supposed to do? Land on the first closest and more suitable airport or continue to your scheduled Arrival Airport? Thanks again and wish you a great day and week-end 😊😃 Edit: I know that you select both autopilot only during Autoland procedure, but what if you're unable to use either of them during flight? You can use the speed selector because Auto/Throttle is independent from Autopilot, but what if the entire MCP Panel fails? 🤣 I'm being too much catastrophic, sorry, but I'd like to know what to do in the worst case scenario
@PILOTCLIMB
@PILOTCLIMB 2 года назад
Hey, great question!!! If the AP fails during cruise you need to go below the RVSM airspace (I made a separate video about RVSM) if you have enough fuel and the weather is good enough you can continue to the destination...but this is a Captain decision and might change depending on some other factors such as fatigue, length of the flight and so on.... if the whole MCP fails you fly like a CESSNA. 👍
@leonegentile6081
@leonegentile6081 2 года назад
@@PILOTCLIMB I'll watch the RVSM video ASAP. Hope this never happens in real life, both MCP ans Autopilot are super important to a safe, reliable and with less workload flight. Thanks captain, awesome answer as usual, loved it 😍

Sir, thanks a lot for the nice explanation. But I have doubt, which I thought to make it clear. For example, we want to decelerate down to 250 KIAS, from 300 KIAS by FL100. Can we use the speed brakes for this purpose, instead of lowering the rate of descent by pitching up? It would be grateful, if you answer this question, sir... Thanks in advance :-)
@PILOTCLIMB
@PILOTCLIMB 3 года назад
Hey, many thanks for watching and the great question! If you want to decelerate when flying an Idle Thrust Descent you must reduce the rate of descent. The main benefit of using the Speed brake is that you will reach the 250 kt early. Check out this video that I posted few days ago it might help you to understand this concept: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mQ2ylgQOUt4.html

@PILOTCLIMB
@PILOTCLIMB 2 года назад
Hey, thanks for watching! VNAV SPEED will fly the speed you set on the MCP (respecting the FMC altitude restrictions), VNAV PATH follows the path calculate by the FMC (also respecting the FMC altitude and speed restrictions).

Hi can you share how we can still use vnav if while descending we are given radar vector? What should we do since we might be low or high if we are told to direct to a particular point? Can we still use vnav and how do we use it? Thank you so much!
@PILOTCLIMB
@PILOTCLIMB 3 года назад
Hey, thanks for the comment!! When you are under radar vector you should use Level change and constantly update the legs page setting as an active waypoint the one that makes more sense. In this way, you will still have some path information. The Path of VNAV only works if you follow the FMC route, so if the ATC makes you do something different you should plan and react accordingly using LVL CHG and so on. I made few videos where I discuss how can you descend and what can affect your descend. Have a look and then let me know if you still have questions. Have a great day!
