I have covered Chris Stapleton twice before, and both times were absolute treats. It's been over a year, and I've had your requests sitting on a list I'm finally getting back to! This song comes from a grammy and CMA winning album by Chris that was not only certified platinum, but sat at #2 on the US Billboard charts and #1 in Canada. I know why. It's so super dang good!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Chris Stapleton performing for the first time "I Was Wrong".

I’m a huge metal head and a guitarist of 27 years but let me tell you, I’ve seen Chris Stapleton several times in concert and the guy is one of the most talented people on the planet. His song writing, guitar playing and vocals are incredible and the shows he puts on are just awesome. Chris wrote a ton of songs for other country singers for years until his wife told him he should write his own stuff. He also has immense stage fright but you could never tell. Dude is lightning in a bottle and just far exceeds what I once thought about him.

Chris is country, Chris is blues, Chris is rock, Chris is soul. The true measure of the greats is an inability to fit them comfortably in any given genre. With this song specifically, you could tell me it came from Motown or Sun Studios in the 60's and I'd believe you. The purity of the blues and soul in this song are timeless. Truly one of the greats

Another great bluesy Stapleton song is “Cold”. Also check out his Metallica cover of “Nothing Else Matters”. And his cover of “Whipping Post”. Man, I can’t recommend enough songs by this guy. He is just too good, and I’m not even a big country guy. Even though he’s technically country, the fact that he is so heavily rock, blues, and folk is what makes him so good. That and his amazing voice! Because country is so popular, the fact that he is even the least bit country and labeled as such is what makes him so damn popular and why so many people have discovered him and fallen in love with his music.

He'll be remembered as one of the greats of all time. Usually you like music because it affects you emotionally with great songs and writing and singing. But every once in a while, you get someone who you just are in awe over. Someone other great musicians just watch and say, what?! They come out there and do things that are so extraordinary, yet make it look effortless and no one else can do it. People like Pavarotti or Karen Carpenter or Celine Dion or Freddie Mercury. They cross music genres too, taste-wise. Meaning, people who may not be into their genre make an exception for them because you just have to.

The perfect accompaniment to Chris's voice is his amazing guitar work... He doesn't play in support of his voice - he performs an amazing duet with the instrument ... Both switching the lead and support between flawlessly.

Barely Alive by The Jompson Brothers is his most insane vocal adventure. It’s a must-listen.

I’ve been to two of Chris’ concerts in Indy near where I live. I’ll tell you right now, no concert I’ve ever been to, no artist I’ve ever heard live is better or puts on a better show than him. I’ve never heard another artist sound better live than him. He is truly one of the greatest artist of the last 25 years.

She has a great blues voice. I was in a community theater production of Fame with her back in the 80s and even as a teenager, she could blow the roof off with her voice. She's even better now.

Elizabeth, I always start out early in your analysis/reaction giving you a thumbs up, but as the song goes on, I'm so disappointed that I can't give you another, and another, and another. Your joy causes me to appreciate the songs on an even deeper level than I previously had. It's just awesome to see someone have such a total reaction to the emotion of every aspect of a song! Thank you for bringing light! Betty

Love your analysis and reaction. I love how you just get so tickled and literally giggle by amazing talent and musicians. Chris Stapleton is awesome and I’m going to see him soon in concert - can’t wait. The Best Country Singer is (arguably) George Jones. Would love it if you watched one of his videos and let us know your thoughts. He is very tradition but an amazing vocalist. Check out “the grand tour” or He stopped loving her today” or something older like “mr. Fool”. Amazing!

My favorite Stapleton song. I’d love to hear your take on Marc Broussard. Maybe the song “Home” or his cover of “ Cry to Me” with his dad playing guitar

I agree! His cover of "Cry To Me" is phenomenal. Any Marc Broussard live performance that you happen to pick will be great though! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hoJQQuseZ7g.html

I must admit: I'm quite impressed. Normally, I despise Modern Country (mostly, because it's just Pop Rock with twang, and uncharacteristically happy-go-fuck-it lyrics); but - and I agree with you, Professor - Chris pulls from a Southern Rock element, which he's combined with Blues, and some other elements I can't identify. Just to make sure this wasn't a 'one-off,' I watched a few other videos, which strike a similar note. In one song, he has a distinct B.B. King element. I, also, really appreciate that he's kept the more maudlin aspects of Classic Country (which just so satisfies my misanthropically, dark-fudge-chocolaty-heart!) While it's not music I'll listen to on a regular basis, it's refreshing to see someone take a chance, and just do what they want. It's quite refreshing. Thank you for introducing me to him. I think you'll love his song Death Row. (As for diphthongs, I think if one truly wants to impress that they need to fully embrace the chaos of phonating phonemes!) A brilliant review, Professor. Have a great night! Best! J (P.S. I'm quite impressed you're able to keep up your reaction regiment, given you've just had a child. It can't be easy.)

You definitely need to check out The White Buffalo At: Guitar Center "The Whistler" and Overheard | Shawn James | Flow absolutely will knock your socks off! Also please more Chris Stapleton! This is a great one that I believe bought him a house : Chris Stapleton - Never Wanted Nothing More | Beaver 100.3 Songwriter Showcase Not on the level of this but still good!

The promise of a great guitar solo drew me in to give Chis Stapleton a listen here, for the first time, as I'm not a fan of country music generally. But wowser! As I listened, his sound reminded me a little bit of a blend of Willie Nelson and Robert Cray. I love the nod to blues in this and that guitar solo was so gorgeous! Thanks Elizabeth. 😍

I'm a bit late to the Chris Stapleton party. Loving the way you explain how he does what he does with his voice. Have you heard his cover of Nothing Else Matters by Metallica? OMG just more proof if ever it were needed of his versatility.
