I love Serj Tankian's vocals. It's an understatement how impressed at the technical prowess he employed when listening to "Aerials" and again here with "Toxicity". The message of this song I feel, having lived in Los Angeles and considering it my home-base. It's a very interesting parallel in relation to over places I've lived throughout my career. I cannot wait to continue to dig deeper into System Of A Down's catalogue!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to System Of A Down performingh "Toxicity" for the very first time.

The song is according to them, talking about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The energy of the song and the seemingly random lyrics depict the chaos in the mind of someone with ADHD and all the distractions we face. "Somewhere between the sacred silence (a divine nonexistent stillness of thought/noise) and sleep, disorder x3" describing that all waking hours are disorder. I hope that helps listening to the song in a new light.

@@nicolaspicard1501 Conversion, software versión 7.0 (Today music is used to bring ideas to the people softly/to upload people with knowledge without them realizing it [instead of converting people with violence as in the past] to convert them into good people. 7 is the number of God.) Looking at life through the eyes of a tire hub. (Like a Rolling Stone-- wandering through life without having the conviction to build upon the stable foundation of Jesús's teachings, life will have a swirling chaotic appearance.) Eating seeds is a pass-time activity. (The many temptations and traps set for us are meant to weed-out weaker peoples' offspring from the population.) The toxicity of our city. (The evil which constantly grows among populations as random genetic mutations create disfunctional people and hedonism corrupts people in times of peace and prosperity. ) More wood for their fires, loud neighbors. (Another metaphor for the slow-motion genocide used to guide population growth. Loud neighbors being bad people, especially those who fight with their own families. Neighbors referring to the fact that we all share this planet.) Flashlight reveries... (Revering/worshipping/paying attention to an artificial light source such as fame, wealth, ideology rather than worshipping The Sun/The Son of God.) ...caught in the headlights of a truck. (A death sentence for those distracted by flashing lights.) You, how do you own the world? (How is it possible to control the population in such a way as to create peace and prosperity, while also protecting the planet and colonizing space?) How do you own disorder? (How can someone convert the population to follow Jesus when people are rebellious and their random genetic mutations cause them to slowly become useless without some type of selective pressure to guide their evolution?) Sacred Silence (Perfect Order. Those who have acheived economic liberation and moral enlightenment become crystalized, as their desire for sex and adventure disappears, and they hide themselves away from the people as to not create jealousy nor spread their crystalization.) Sleep (The darkness of the absolute chaos of nature without any conscious beings.) Now, somewhere between the Sacred Silence and Sleep. (Humanity today--the place between the perfect order of The Illuminated Ones and the Absolute Chaos of Nature. ☯️ The place where the action happens, sex/reproduction, adventure/discovery. The place where new forms of being are born and rise.) Disorder. (The purposeful introduction of Chaos to balance out Humanities natural inclination to Order our world. The balance between Chaos and Order.) When I became The Sun.... (When I achieved the enlightenment and wealth which put me above humanity and made me a true source of illumination for them. When i became a Son of God/an embassador for the growth of the consciousness of The Universe through human evolution.) ...I shone life into the man's hearts. (I illuminated/I converted softly. I showed people how to awaken their spirits so they would create technologies and families and mass movements which grow humanity's glory.).

This tune was always about drums for me. The snare sound is fantastic and every 4th bar in the verse there is a slightly longer pause between the final snare and bass drum hits of the fraze. I adore that tiny detail. Drum covers on YT miss it or embellish the beat in their own way ruining it in my eyes. This beat is so perfect it needs to be played like on the recording.

Cool story. Serj lives in New Zealand now. A couple years ago he built a new recording studio on his land. My brother was there every day for 2 week's land moving and laying the slab. Long story short they got along really well as they bonded politically and my brother didn't treat him like a celebrity. He would singing throughout the day and show him the things he could do with his voice while he was helping out. At the end of the job he gave him a signed poster and invited him and his girlfriend over for dinner

I didn't see anyone mention it, but Serj is a trained opera singer. That's why his control is on another level. Everything is orchestrated to fit the narrative they're conveying in their song and showcase the lyric's message.
@berringervids
@berringervids Год назад
He was in a team that sang opera in Armenia. Rumours say he is a well trained opera singer, he might be, but he is not using any of those techniques in his SoaD-performances. Rumours said that Freddie Mercury was a trained opera singer too, but it shows he took some classical piano courses in Mumbai only. Serj has not said it himself and until he does I do not buy the "trained opera singer" story. Does it matter though? He is an amazing singer! And that is what matters, no matter what training he had.
@twelveeighteenofficial7487
@twelveeighteenofficial7487 Год назад
@@berringervids You say he's not using any of those techniques, but isn't he? Breath control, vibrato on demand, dynamics, dead-on pitch control, these are many things that are demanded of opera singers. He doesn't "sound like" a traditional opera singer, but he's not singing traditional opera here either.
@deighvheart9717
@deighvheart9717 Год назад
The whole opera training thing is a myth. In several interviews from the last year to promote his solo ep, he discusses how he has never had any formal music training. He's only been in only other band, with daron called Soil, and he started out playing keys. He considers himself to be a poet, and singing to be a great way to delivery his poetry. Don't get me wrong, i am a huge fan. But it's natural talent and not proper training. From what i understand, his lack of training is a huge factor in why they don't play many shows any more. The screaming and growly bits really hurt him. He just doesn't want to sing like that anymore.
@berringervids
@berringervids Год назад
@@twelveeighteenofficial7487 Well a operasinger that sings metal still uses the techniques of singing, but you can easily see and hear that he is not a well trained opera singer. But the opera-training-part is humbug I think.

One of the defining features of SOAD - among their amazing instrumentation and songwriting - is how aggressively they crash in with thrashing drums and roaring strings, then how swiftly they float into heavenly choirs and heartrending melodies. Serj really has an incredible voice. His transitions are so glorious - goes up like sunday service and comes down like murder. It’s magnificent. Back when I was taking bass lessons, my teacher described their songs' effect as "you get hit by a frontal assault and, as you struggle to regain your poise you're reminded you have a heart, and it is bleeding". A bit dramatic for my taste at the time, but the fucker was right. This whole arc sometimes happens across the whole song (Chop Suey), while in other tracks it can be rushed between the instrumental intro and the first verse (Toxicity). Mind you, this is no accident. The four of them are actual, full blown artists in the fullest meaning of the term.

I absolutely recommend you checking out "Spiders" and "Sugar" from their self-titled debut album. Sadly, the "Toxicity" album had the misfortune of being released on Tuesday, September 11th, 2001. Despite being Armenian-Americans, in the aftermath of the attacks the band faced racism because they looked different and had "funny" sounding names. Also, after 9/11 their single, "Chop Suey!", which came out in August 2001, was pulled from radio play due to having the line "self-righteous suicide" which people associated with the attacks.

As a rock/metal musician, I really appreciate your analysis on Serj. He's so unique. One band that you might be interested in analyzing is Trivium. Their vocalist, Matt Heafy, has overcome vocal issues over the years and is still going strong. He's also an active streamer on Twitch and would be an awesome interview for Tea Time. Every time I've talked with him at shows, he always comes off as a very down-to-earth and thoughtful guy. Some songs you might consider reviewing are "The Sin and the Sentence," "Catastrophist," "In Waves," and "Into the Mouth of Hell We March." Keep up the great work!

I 2nd Trivium. I might also suggest some of their older stuff...Specifically Gunshot to the head to trepidation. He had little technique there and that caused him to blow his voice out, but their playing is so good considering they were all really young then.

SOAD drummer John Dolmayan told MTV: "'Toxicity' was one of those songs where we hadn't done anything like it before. It required something completely different than any other System song did. The guitars are just, in some ways, really powerful, and in others, they just step back so that the melody can take over a little bit. So it's a really good combination of aggression and melodic elements, which represents this album."

"I'm still just *mesmerized* by the way [Serj sings]" Just wait until you get the album Mezmerize/Hypnotize!!! The harmonies that Serj and Daron do are phenomenal and I get the gist that they allow even more of their background to merge with the metal/rock sound they started with. Edit: It's interesting that you felt the chorus in 3 that leads to the the 4 in the bridge feeling different. There is certainly a triplet feel based on the syncopated bass/snare groove but the cymbal works is typically where I find the heartbeat of a section and that is definitely 4. And coming from that perspective the bridge isn't that big of a change. I didn't look it up but I'd wager it's a small tempo increase to boost the intensity without feeling like we've actually changed anything. I always love hearing other people's perspectives on a song because of this exact moment. I've felt this song to be one (mostly static*) tempo/meter and you felt a shift in the bridge. Both are valid understandings of the song and I'm sure the polyrhythmic idea was designed purposefully to continue the idea of duality in their toxic-city -- those who suffer from the toxicity and those who gain. * I say mostly static because the verses can be felt either as the same tempo as the chorus or a half-time feel depending on the listener. Edit 2: Last edit, I promise 😅So with me counting the 4 against you counting the 3 I realized exactly what's happening here. The band introduces a hemiola in the chorus. Very cool and not something I've really picked up before!!!

That vibrato is definitely from his Armenian background 100%. This song is about ADHD and it's medication (speed). Notice the shifts in the tempo also match the shifts in the backgrounds between light and dark. Masterfully done song and video. "During a performance at the 2005 Download Festival, Daron Malakian said that the song was about Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), a condition that causes a person to have trouble concentrating." I definitely recommend Sugar, Spiders, Prison Song, or Deer Dance as your next listen...

The last "disorder" verse at the end of the chorus resembles a traditional Persian glottal technique that produces delicious harmonics - and Serj is very good at using them. His vocal character is undeniably unique in rock/metal music. "Toxicity" and "Spiders" are two songs that divide me in two for deciding which one Serj's best work is in vocal performance :). I'm not a lyrics/poetry guy when it comes to music but the words "how do you own disorder?" stop me on my tracks every time i hear them. Lastly, the 6/8 over 4/4 metric modulations are incredible; as you've also noticed - after all, how do you own disorder, right? :)) On a side note: That traditional Persian vocal technique is mastered by the great Homayoun Shajarian, however. I suggest you check him out, if you haven't already. Yet another great video, keep it up Elizabeth!
