I cannot tell you how excited I am for this. Till Lindemann is protraying the Sandman, which is the same role I portrayed in Germany while performing at the Dresden Semperoper in a production of Hansel and Gretel. I mean, we both portrayed the same character. HOW CRAZY IS THAT?! So of COURSE I have to analyze this version! I am SO EXCITED!!!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Rammstein and Till Lindemann performing for the very first time "Mein Herz Brennt”.

Try Blue Stahli - Ultranumb accoustic. It is the same kind of thing as here, a metal version sang in a more "delicate " way. Plus, here we have Till with his deep Bariton voice, Brett (Blue Stahli singer) is in the opposite direction of speech! If you don't do a video on it, it's alright. Just hear it :) you will love it

rammstein - zeit ...(and all other rammstein videos.. just check first the stories he is talking about.. and why not official video mein herz brennt..with violins..and the story behind..all of them have a story..well..if you want to miss the best live shows of all..) ..i don't go to concerts, since i am a paralized guy, but, if there is one i ..rammstein it would be.. I rediscouvered them, like you, as an adult..i watched "du hast "- live in Paris..video... since then..omg! Do a favour to yourself..get one day of to watch what we missed..but "zeit", is another masterpiece.. by the way, if you watch the live shows, be aware that after one accident in beginning, they are all certified pyrotechnitians..even though, if in one song live show, they don't need it..he was shooting schaum with a giant penis to croud..they are awesome, and Till is the dark poet! Till Lindeman, has also rare solo musics in his name..an genious artist! ..and their videoclips..i don't know if i prefer them, to watch or live shows..

Till Lindemann is an underappreciated master of his art. Rammstein is too often dismissed as a sort of low-brow industrial metal band that people just listen to when at the gym or whatever. But they have some absolutely beautiful music, and it's very much because of Till's amazing songwriting and performance abilities.

Honestly, to achieve the level of success they have had, especially here in the US where the language barrier is probably the biggest obstacle anywhere in the world, I can't help but consider them one of the greatest metal bands of all time. Only a couple albums that mildly disappointed, but still had highlights. Consistently draws huge crowds. Every single member important to their sound. Really hard to not have them near or at the top of the greatest list when you really think about it.

Not gonna lie I’ll just throw on a playlist of all their albums just to fall asleep to or for car rides, like a lot and often. I’ve absolutely loved listening to Rammstein since I was like 5 or 6 years old (thankful for older brothers and a dad who listen to all kinds of metal lol). I would like to mention though I reeeeally just like German Metal in general at this point lol. I love Till’s solo band Lindemann, and other bands like Eisbrecher, Megaherz, and dear God OOMPH! is amazing. I like music for the music itself, but these bands in specific, the vocals are just mesmerizing to me.

My older son and I have met some of the nicest people there. I have no problem if my son goes up front and I sit by myself or stand back farther. I know 99% of the people there got my back. It's just amazing how great metal fans are. I've never once seen a fight up close, or felt unsafe in any way, not even at Slayer shows. One woman at one show just about pushed me over and immediately, 4 men I never met, surrounded me as I told her to watch where she was going. She was like close to 6 ft and I'm not 5ft on my best day. She didn't bother me again. 😅 Then the same guys asked me if I wanted to go for a rise, crowd surfing 🤣 and I said thanks, but I will pass. Haha it was funny. I will go til they plant me. Music, metal and hard rock shows keep me sane.

"Mein Herz brennt" refers to the type of burning in the heart caused by hurt and resentment that causes one to seek revenge or inflict pain upon others in some vain attempt to relieve one's own pain. It is the deep hellish burning Inferno of pain in the heart from which one is desperate to escape. It is as if one's being is consumed with the feeling. It is analogous to the German term "Weltschmerz"
@Tritachion
@Tritachion 2 года назад
I agree, but would say it is a more... outside perspective. Like, we do have a nonmentioned protagonist here, who is suffering from a deep, painful hurt. But the song describes more how the _feeling_ comes to hem, or rather, how it _feels_ to experience it. Lying awake, in tears, in the dead of the night, when the creepy-crawly ghouls of our own demons come slithering out of the dark basement of the soul to haunt us, all the while we are utterly helpless to fight them off in that moment. Fantastic song.

Maybe it's a stretch but given how they play with subverting expectationsl, especially on myths and fairy tale beings, see how in Engel, they play the angels as miserable creatures, so too may it be that they are playing the Sandman as a similar one. No mate. Just no. In this song the heart that Till riped out of his chest is literally burning sending out a bright light that gives him the power to "extort the eyes". For the demons, ghosts and black fairies to collect the childrens tears and push them in his veins. In the context of this song the burning heart is not ment metaphorically My heart burns is a highly contextual phrase. The German heart can burn for many a reasons. Anger, Fury, Exitement, Love or just pure Joy. If the heart burns it can mean that you are absolutely filled with energy and passion, ready to do anything.

Thanks for the English lyrics. I pity the poor bastards who attempted to translate Goethe into English, and Shakespeare into German! Of course Till is not on that level, but translation (or maybe sometimes transliteration?), or whatever the hell you wanna call it, is so difficult. I think that nowadays Rammstein lyrics into English get the point across, but can't possibly do the full art. Maybe likely why Till's band "Lindemann" did so much in English. Possibly he had some buddies helping him with that. I certainly would love to be a buddy sitting next to him helping him to be artful with English. I once knew someone who I respected. His website was in 2 versions, Italian and English. It was obvious he did well with English, but vernacular and idioms and some grammar were not right. It didn't take me more than 3 hours, but I copied all his HTML from his English site and sent a corrected form back to him. He was very happy! He had no problem plugging it into his English site. If you really like someone who is having problems with language, help them out if you can do it!

My personal interpretation of the song is that it's about the thoughts that come up when you're lying in bed, unable to sleep, worrying and overthinking things. As if your pillow is putting all of these uncomfortable ideas into your head, going on endlessly until the sun rises again. In that context, Till is not really playing a character here - he is his own subconscious talking to and, with this delivery, essentially threatening himself. Like how children might fear going to bed and being in the dark, he essentially speaks to himself as if he is a child, still scared to put his head down and surrender to whatever thoughts may come up when his conscious mind shuts off for the day

I was honored to see RAMMSTEIN just 3 weeks ago and was in shock! I never thought I would see another band that could top most of the hundreds of live shows I've experienced in my life. We won't talk about the stage alone that took 400 people 6 days to build! Or the 365 gallons of fuel for one night of their pyrotechnics! I saw some of the most talented musicians/ entertainers I've experienced in a while. They have the stage theatrics like Alice Cooper (Welcome To My Nightmare was Till's first album) but taken to a whole new level! The stage emotion of Pink Floyd The Wall but to a whole new level! And that is saying a lot! Not to mention the opening act classical pianists Duo Jatekok played so beautifully they brought a tear to my eye. What an amazing show I will ever forget!

Fun bit of trivia: The cuts you see on his chest and arms are not fake. He did to himself because he wanted a more real vibe to the video. In some of Till's side-project music videos you can clearly see the scars on his arms from such. It's no secret that Till likes pain; band members have said this on interview), so it doesn't surprise me that he did that for this. Strangely enough though, it's things like this that make me love them so much. They do everything with such precision and passion, like a well-oiled machine, with 100 percent every time, creative, creepy, weird, kickass riffs, handsome guys, INCREDIBLE live shows and pyros, catchy tunes, giving back so much to their fans and literally building an entire stage for every show so as to support the lighting, mood and pyro.. Their sense of humour as well as addressing serious issues or telling a dark story, is awesome. Music videos like Dicke Titten or Zick Zack showcase an example. No other band comes close when it comes to their live shows, which are INCREDIBLE. I saw Iron Maiden recently, yeah they were fantastic but seeing Bruce with a tiny flamethrower giving random teeny blasts that were like a foot long or so, and having seeing Rammstein live with their INSANE but JAW-DROPPING pyrotechnics. Anyway, In Rosenrot music video Rammstein really do whip themselves as shown in the video and behind the scenes documentary about the videoshoot. This video for Mein Herz Brennt remains a beautiful video though, one of my favourite songs of theirs. I would highly recommend checking out EVERY video they've done. A MUST-SEE band live!

When I see the character Till portrays in the video smile, I always see an incredibly deep pain. Maybe the reason we find it off-putting is because the smile doesn't reach his eyes at all. The disconnect between what the eyes express and smile on his face tells us instinctively that something is very wrong. I don't know if I'm the only one who sees pain in that expression, but it always reminds me of a feeling I had during a particularly deep depression where it almost physically hurt when I tried to smile. It would be really interesting to know what everyone else sees in that expression, in that smile. And thank you Elizabeth, for giving us all a deeper understanding of so many wonderful songs and performances. You give such an fascinating insight into the instrument we're all born with, our voice.

Yeah I definitely see pain behind his expression as well, pain and a deep sadness for what has happened to him as a child. They say the song is about child abuse, and the emotional pain and trauma that comes with it which is often passed on to their own offspring. Mein herz brennt represents his emotional pain as an adult, he is trying to smile but it just comes off as creepy and you can see the pain and sadness behind. I've always found this version to be the most visually and vocally mesmerising. His soothing, almost reasonable tone to begin with seems at odds with his frightening appearance. Every word is enunciated so clearly to ensure that his message is received and understood. This whole picture, however dark and graphic, is maintained until that first rictus smile that makes the hairs on the back of your neck rise up. He's creating anxiety in the children he's addressing with his warning of the demons and black fairies that will visit them in their nightmares and he does so as he relies upon their warm tears to survive. He lives as a result of their fears, in some ways like Pennywise in It. The price he pays though is that the children's anxiety causes his heart to burn and he becomes angry and resentful . Added to this is of course the approach of the dawn, he can no longer ply his trade however masochistic it may be. After the second smile, which is slightly more faltering than the first, his eyes become dead and he ultimately descends to the place from whence he came. His voice and facial expression become more desperate and almost pleading but nothing can deter the daylight and his temporary demise. It really is a mesmerising performance from Till. His vocal abilities are clear, he can't hide behind guitar riffs or drums etc., he only has the piano so there is no hiding place (as if he needed one!!). Love your reaction, such a joy to see such excitement and enthusiasm and to hear the technical aspects of the way that he sings this wonderful version of this brilliant song.

I am from the Netherlands and lived 10 years in Germany so I speak the German language as my second language....I totally understand Till his art. Rammstein is art at top level. Even if you don't like his voice and the edges he seeks in his songs....But there is no band in the world who makes music like they do! By the way what a nice person are you!

If you want to hear something from till, which is outside of his „normal“ vocal range: I suggest to look into „Ich tu dir weh“, live from the madison square garden. Such a beautiful chorus with a mixture of Baritone and very clean singing :) And that melody in the chorus 🥰
@MeyerzumMischen
@MeyerzumMischen 2 года назад
Sadly I've got the feeling that a lot of the clean sining vocal stuff is playback in their live performances. You can't directly see it in the madison square garden video (the video editing shows him just in the verses from close up for longer periods of time - in the chorus and the middle section the other band members suddenly get more coverage and Till is just shown from far away or in close ups that are cutaway before the word ends - and the ending is the thing where you can identify playback the easiest...). There is a Rock am Ring performance where it is a lot more apparent. I don't want to say I'm 100% sure, but it's a bit suspicious, I think.
@BobSlasher

@@MeyerzumMischen Unfortunately you're right with the camera angles etc. But it's one of the best sounding live performances of the song and the whole song except the scene on the plateau is live. @@MeyerzumMischen So, I've been at their show in Prague, about a month ago, and I am positive that it was all live. He slightly changed some vocalisations, quite often parts of the lyrics, which means that the 'playback' would have to be timed very, very precise. Zeit, for instance, or Adieu, had change of lyrics, in Mein Herz Brennt he had gone really of "script" in a line (which was fun). This was my live experience, maybe they did in some past performance, I don't know, but they don't need a playback to perform, so I rather doubt they would do that . :)

"Mein Herz Brennt" is my favorite Rammstein song and i remember when the piano version came out, i was sobbind uncontrollably because how unexpectedly beautiful this new version was. also at the time, my friend suggested that Till's character appearance in this video could be fitting for Carabosse fairy in horror adaptation of the Sleeping beauty ballet.

Till Lindemann has a very special voice. It may be that the group is a bit controversial in Germany, much because of Till, and I don’t keep track of exactly why and I think it’s mostly a misconception. But as a Swede living in Sweden, I do listen to Rammstein quite a lot, their music is just incredible both when it comes to melody and instrumentals, and voice of course. Seriously considering picking up German again and try to learn some more. I took German for a while at school little over 20 years ago and have sadly forgotten most of it, but Rammstein makes me want to pick it up again so I can listen to the lyrics more too and understand them

I don't think I've ever seen you get so touched by a song as with this one. Till's interpretation does chill one to the bone. He really shows an alternate view for this song. I'd love to see him do interpretations of other songs, he's an amazing artist, both lyrically, and in interpretation. And the piano... hoof. It makes me feel terror and love at the same time, which is awesome.

I was pondering (as a German) the question in which ways "Mein Herz brennt" could be interpreted. There is an expression "für etwas brennen" (to burn for something) which means to be passionate about something. On the other hand there something like "Mein Arm brennt" (lietrally: my arm burns) is often used to describe something like a sunburn or a similar burning pain. My guess would be that he is playing with this double meaning on purpose.
@Cornu341
@Cornu341 2 года назад
And it could also be literal in that fire was consuming something. So many possible layers of interpretation.

I feel like as the Sandman, his heart burns because a small part of him has a conscience and feels badly about "consuming" the children's fear. He is self realizing, in a sense. I don't know but it seems to fit the video? The way he smiles and then looks completely disturbed and how it seems like he kills himself at the end, as if he can't live knowing he is harming children (the wisp of smoke at the end could be his soul). Just my take on it.

It being Rammstein, you can automatically assume they are playing with double meanings and not having a clear interpretation of their lyrics.

When I was a teenager, I think the first Rammstein album I bought was Mutter. The original version of this song is on that album and I had not heard this 2015 version of it. I enjoy it so much. It is an inherently creepy concept as a song and it works so well with simply a piano and Till Lindemann staring at you, it gives it the intimacy there is between a child and their nighttime monsters. I know the original version probably had to fit the big sound of the album but I feel it robs this intimacy from the lyrics. Loved this video so much!
