Vocal Coach Reaction to Queen - Freddie Mercury - Live Aid - Ken Tamplin
He is the champion of the world
Queen’s performance at Live Aid should have been a footnote in history. By 1985 the band, Queen, was in decline. With ebbing popularity and stinging from the negative press of an ill-advised series of concerts in apartheid-ruled South Africa, the band was slotted between mega acts, U2 and Elton John. Queen was not expected to stun and amaze anyone. That was until Freddie Mercury took the stage. A stripped down set, sans the costumes and spectacle of their earlier years, there was nothing to distract from the performance. And what a performance it was. Leading the enthralled crowd in a rhapsodic sing-along of their greatest hits Freddie could command a stage like few before or since. And the rest, as they say, is history.
This particular performance continues to inspire me nearly 34 year later.

Mari of the Shire yes! All of the bandmates were different and Brian was mostly a rock person, Roger was rock and jazz, Freddie was a little bit of everything, & John was wonderful with either soft loving music like “ you’re my best friend” or funky music. I thought it was funny when another one bites the dust came out and it was put on R&B . Why not? Queen was great and that song was absolutely incredible. We would dance and rollerskate to it all night long.

Mark Bennett Freddie was incredibly bold and brave for going out there and performing that day (despite his doctor telling him he should not) for the cause, and of course, as the band said, all of the bands were doing it for the famine in Ethiopia in addition to giving off one heck of a performance. All of them wanted to show off their talents and promote their bands- The older ones not so much but of course The bands who were still making albums and touring. Freddie Mercury was extremely generous anyway, and he would’ve done it alone had he been put in this position. Each of the bandmembers did their individual work but I don’t think any of them had the chemistry that all four members of Queen had together. They were unique and they were special! ❤️

I totally agree with you about Marc Martel. In my opinion he is one of very few Artists with pure talent that doesn't need the aid auto tune. He sounds like a young Freddie mercury and I love how he can nail all of Queen's songs. Especially the ones that unfortunately Freddie didn't get to perform live like "Show Must Go On" which is probably my favorite Queen song.

A really solid singer! But in my opinion not a single patch on the overall package of Freddie - Including his quirky vibrato, Which along with his mesmerizing tone, Makes everything he sung so magical. Marc sings their songs so well tho, I'm not surprised the band work with him. Just to add one more thing. This 20 min slot they had at live aid was amazing, A little disrespectful this man shrugging off some of the performance.. But I guess he had a particular mission for his talking points.

I was fortunate to see them twice. Once In the late seventies and again at Wembley in 86 I believe. Freddie's voice had changed so much. When I listened to him the first time he had a very pure soft voice with tremendous power. In 1986 his voice was different had a different Timbre and characteristic to it. It seemed like he was really having to strain to reach the notes where before they were effortless for him. Still one of the most amazing performers I have ever seen there will never be another one like him. Just say the man was an enigmatic performer is not giving him justice. I guess the best way to describe him was he had a voice and he would strut on the stage as if he owned it. Even today his voice is unequaled by anyone. Not just an amazing singer but an amazing performer and songwriter. Thanks for taking us back to one of the most memorable performances in the history of Rock. Rock on Ken. BTW your course is amazing Ken I have already added nearly five notes to my range. Thank you so much!

Queen was my very first concert... The Forum in LA...1982. I was 14 and WAY too young to be out with the group of Marines I was with...drinking and partying. But...it was one of the best nights of my life and no concert has ever compared. My teenage daughters (who have fallen in love with Queen and my COOL status has gone up a notch 😜) and I found pics and video from the concert I went to and we actually found me in the crowd...couldn’t miss me with my feathered beach blonde hair, my solid gold metallic blouse and white slacks that laced at the ankles. I remember everything! I wore super hot gold metallic heels...and lost one of the backs to my gold hoop earrings and worried all night about losing it. I was SMASHING that night!!! And...got home pretty tipsy but unscathed. I actually married one of those marines a few years later! Anyway...I feel so honored to have gotten to see them! And, at their best. My husband now, the love of my life, took me to see Tom Petty and we were so glad because he died a year later. So...very honored to have gotten to see him too! And yes...I dressed for the concert...black and white patterns from head to toe including the sexiest pair of black and white striped high heels you’ve ever seen! Was so afraid that it was for nothing by the end of the concert and he hadn’t sang “Don’t come around here no more”....but...they came back and did it for the encore 😊 I love your videos and how you notice things many others don’t. Thanks for letting me relive some wonderful nights!!!!

Why did he hold his note when he goes "I got to goooooooooo" then? Also what about that note when he's doing that acapalla chant to the crowd after Radio Gaga?

They altered the movie a bit so as to address the AIDS issue somewhat, but not dwell on it. Since the timeframe if the movie ended in 1985, it feels like he was sick in 1985. But he was not. He was not diagnosed with the disease until, I think 1989. He did not tell the band until a while later and he made the news public less than 24 hours before he died. For the Live AID concert, he had a throat infection. The doctor did not want him to sing. But he did not want to miss partipating in this fundraising concert. The infection is why he goes sharp on a couple of notes and why he indeed does not hold a few notes as long as he normally would have. But who cares....it was Freddie Mercury and Queen! It was an outstanding performance! I love watching it every time. It never gets old. ❤ ❤

Freddie was top-notch. There’s no doubt he knew when he was off key during this performance at times, but it didn’t even come close to shaking him. A great testament to the force of a frontman that he was. I don’t think anyone watches this and thinks his rough patches took away from this legendary moment.

I've seen Queen at Live Aid like 30 times. I'm really happy you uploaded this video Ken! Freddy Mercury has really inspired me to write music with all the passion he displayed on stage. I've never been the best singer but guess what Ken... I got your singing method so that I can decently sing my own songs. I never thought a singing method could be so engaging! Feels like you're there with me. Big fan of yours Ken! Everything you sing sounds amazing!

In Memphis there’s an Italian restaurant owned by a guy who looked like Uncle Junior on The Sopranos. There’s gold records and autographed pictures on the wall of people he financed in the 1950s and 60s. He was manning the cash register and watching as Queen played Crazy Little Thing at Live Aid. “Wow! I think that boy’s gonna get somewhere, like a young Elvis!” Mr. Sam was right, Freddy did get somewhere.

I loved your reaction, I remember watching the whole of Live Aid on tv and I know Queen just blew everyone else away they really ruled the day. I don't know if you know but Freddie was suffering with a few medical problems one being his voice and it was a huge worry if he would even be able to make the show, turns out it was the start of HIV symptoms.

I fell in love with Queen's music from sheer heart attack, the 1 & 2 , a night at... then every album in order until the Game - 9 albums : a decade of my life. Because of those guys I had a Les Paul(white beauty) and toured and sang for 3 years with 4 great guys. Bites the dust did it for me... then the funk albums ...uuuggghh Broke my heart. They were the most important band through my teens. Love em.

Freddie was a complete musician and the best, and its goes beyond opinion, it's a fact. Of course we have/had another singers who completely knows how to do it and got their own way to the top ( on rock'n'roll department ). Once you create your personality/musicality and way to do things, you start to influence/inspire other people, nobody takes away that. C ya ! Keep Rocking !

Freddie stole the show that day! I recall seeing some footage from Philly when he was doing Radio Ga Ga & the crowd there was clapping along with everyone at Wembley. Has to go down as one of the sets ever played live & Queen aren’t even my favourite band. His passing was a great loss to music 🙁 R.I.P Dio 🤘🏻
@RltchieI
@RltchieI 5 лет назад
Side note: I heard a story about this show, apparently Geldof announced them without asking them, so they hammered rehearsal of their short set & stole the show. Apparently as they left the stage one of the Boomtown Rats turned to Geldof & said “Thanks Bob, now we have to f**king follow that”. I hope it’s true 😂

@RltchieI

Bill Hassell technically a lot of people followed Queen on the bill & all would have been daunted by following them and not reaching that height. I was careful not to say “directly follow” 😉, this is because I also know Geldof bumped Ultravox down the set list when he found out Princess Diana was about to leave so he could perform in front of her 😉 Bowie took the bold step of playing a video rather than I first song if I recall, to remind everyone of why this was happening. I doubt you could do another Live Aid now as the calibre of some of our auto tuned & lip syncing artists of today is woeful.
