Vocal Coach Reacts - Axis Of Awesome - 4 Chord Song - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Today we’re going to look at a video of a performance I’ve referenced multiple times in the past, that demonstrates how different variations of the same 4 chords are the basis for many of the songs we know and love.
The song comes from a musical comedy act called Axis of Awesome which was an Australian trio that performed from 2006 to 2018 making parodies off of well known songs.
This particular song was their best known work and it was called “Four Chords” and it's a medley of 36 popular songs that all used the same 4 chord progression.
As I react to performance, I’ll break down the progressions and we’ll go over them on my guitar. I’ll also share with you all some other variations that you can create.
I think you’ll find the video to be very entertaining and hopefully also informative. Please make sure to let me know what you thought!
Also here's the video I referenced that I did with my students Anthony Vincent from 10 second songs and Gabriela Gunčíková of A Journey Through Rock and Roll: • 65 Songs - A Journey T...

I got to see them live a few years ago they were amazing and they change which songs they use every years . there been a few changes with this bands the middle singer is now a female now and the band spilt up in 2018. in 2020 Jordan ( middle singer) explained, through a RU-vid video, that the band had originally decided to take a break, and that break had become permanent. She explained that she still wished the band were together performing, but people grow and change over time and a decade together is a long time.

Hey Ken great video I really enjoy your videos. I love how passionate you are and you really know your stuff. I don't really mean to be too nitpicky, but the sculptor that you were referring to was not Leonardo da Vinci it was Michelangelo referring to the Statue of David. Michelangelo was quoted saying that the statue was there in the marble he just needed to remove the unnecessary bits.

As a singer/pianist/songwriter myself, I roared with laughter when I saw this years ago. AAAaaand I'm guilty of using the same I IV vi V chord pattern in a lot of my own work. That comparison to the statue really sorta opened my eyes to pop. My sister listens to almost strictly pop and rap. So I got really tired of hearing “the same songs” all the time. But you’re absolutely right. Even if the backing is similar to any other song, the potential message is what makes it. While some aren’t very good/“deep”, they can be/are different. Thanks for that insight. I never would have thought of it.

Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy By the way. I super forgot to ask. I can’t afford to make donations, so I’m throwing away my shams and asking here. A lot of my friends don’t consider shanties to be “actual music” because they’re closer to marching cadences than they are to things like rebel or folk songs. I was wondering if you’d ever react to something like “The Longest Johns” cover of Cruel Wars (or The Banks of the Lee) or really anything by them. I haven’t seen anyone react to/review a shanty before. And personally, I think The Longest Johns do an excellent job at covering them. They are a fantastic group and their covers are very good imo. As well as something like The Decembrists - “Mariner’s Revenge”. There’s an animation for it made by a RU-vidr called “Glittersharks” that’s really good, as well as a (I think) live recording of them singing it. It would be incredible if you would react to and/or review any of those songs. I think what you do is great, and it’s inspired me to start training my voice again after years of being out of the choir. Thanks for that

The 4 chord song is well known for music insiders and the 4 chord phenomenon is actually a problem for the music industry, as people are no longer used to other chord progressions. I therefore appreciated that you showed us other progressions, even though I would have liked a bit more theory behind it, why these progressions work. (The D together with E-B-A is really a mixolydian mode.) I was actually missing one more progression: The vi - V(1st inv) - I (like in Shallow or Dear Mr President and so many others...)

Thank you Ken for explaining/demonstrating the tonal quality differences. I play a little guitar, and I have a friend who plays as well. He is a much better player and is self-taught. He doesn't really know much in the way of theory. I on the other hand went through the music program in school and was a music major in college for a couple years. So I understand much more of the theory and the difference in voicing as well as resonance for difference tonal registers (sorry about the bad terminology, I've forgotten a LOT in 20 years lol). So when I play songs with this friend, I will often do just as the original artists did and I will use a capo on my guitar. My friend always chides me about using a "cheater" because he can figure out how to technically play any song without one. But, as you demonstrated here, it's doesn't always sound right. I can't imagine someone trying to play a song like Here Comes the Sun without a capo. Because it's quite a ways up the neck and has a very clear and bright tonal quality you simply can't get at the lower end. Anyway, sorry about rambling. P.S. I love this video you reacted to. I watch it every so often just because it's so much fun.

I know I might sound ignorant, 4 chords proves that the words are more important than music as long as music is passable.

@@kentamplin Very much!!! Brings back great memories!!! My brother use to play a 12-string. I just loved sitting in front of him and his guitar. I'd hear him across the house, tuning it, and I'd run and sit, and listen. Lol,, I decided to sit a bit farther, when he broke a string and it sorta slapped me in the face. I laughed then too. I was Ok. Just thought I'd share that memory with you,, 🙂. 💜🤙💜 You're the best!

i did for a short time abaut 6 to 12 monthes but due to the music and feeling uncomfy with the way i had to sing songs. and what kind of songs. so i stopped and im not verry self confident to sing with ppl around me i dont know especially croweds i think its because im also autistic and have a hard time feeling comfy with things i cant control well. and that is why i had to give up on my dream to sing like alot of ppl like nickleback and all the others i like to listen to and now that im a twitch streamer i do sometimes sing but it doesnt sound good with what i use as a microfone haha

Actually this video is from a comedy fest in Australia. But yes they did one from Montreal and they put Celine Dion songs in. They tend to find songs by local artists to throw in as curve balls and that's what makes it funny

Pachabel lives!!!! Hands down the most popular progression ever haha. Okay maybe second to standard I IV V but certainly its in the top two or three haha. I have often told people look there are 12 notes in the western music system. Which means there is a finite number of ways you can put them together. And while that is a huge number of permutations there is a much smaller subset of those that sound pleasing to the ear :)
